iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock took away one of my Pics

You know that is really a scary thought. The more they restrick the more concepts will be lost. How else can you convey communication but through phone...or computer. The laptop creator...not brand...could sue you for their "design" of the laptop. It really only opens the doors for more vector type images. What are the buyers to do if they don't like vectors....maybe I need to learn vectors.

Useful page, two minor flaws,

The link for Andreas Rodriguez (composite images) points to Sean's iStock portfolio

The Captcha to contact the site owner has no image in Firefox or IE. So I couldn't write to him.  :-X

Does anyone believe the most searched words for SS has anything meaningful? Pizza is #11 this month. #100 is a male body part. Some in between are hard to believe as "top searched" words. Other months people have spammed it up with expletives.

It may be an old link and doesn't work correctly. Heh Race why didn't you take me up on that offer to split the pizza so we could get it photographed and uploaded before it got cold??? See now it's already dropped to 11th place....LOL :D

It really does contain alot of good information, some even we can learn from as experienced photographers or to refresh our memory. I think sometimes we forget the do's and don't of photography from day to day. It helps us old folks to remember......not that I'm old ::)

The low end, low earner sites really are a waste of time. In reality their acceptance of every picture you upload doesn't teach you what will sell and what won't. You learn more by joining the bigger sites and that still doesn't guarantee big results...but it helps one learn alot about the composition, lighting...ect..ect

Just looking at some messages and some portfolios and wondering what kind of numbers the people who read here have up on IS.

Doesn't matter, exclusive or not, photos or vectors or artwork.

As an aside, I removed everything except four images and started over Jan. 2009.

Sounds like a good thing to do, especially cleaning out all of those non sellers and start uploading with a new perspective

I was cruising the web and found this website that has some very good information to keep in mind and the do's and don't of stock photography. Good questions you need to ask yourself and keep in mind before you take those shots. There are other links on there to good information. So if you are a newbie it would be worth your while to take a look at this site. Even as a experienced photography it is good to read to get yourself back on track.

Dude, bananas are so last hour.  Unfortunately, I can't take advantage of the new market study that shows kiwifruits coming in out of nowhere, since my inspections can take a few days.

Latest ticker news from the market ... interest in 'pepperoni pizza' is is strengthening whilst 'business team' has been over-bought and looking shaky.
Any one interested in a Pizza?...I'll split the slices with you in case they lose their interest before we get them posted and eaten.....LOL ::)

Today someone bought one of my landscape images on Istock at XS size netting me 22c commission. It was the first sale of that image in the 4 months it had been on-line. The subject was a coastal geological feature, images of which tend to be relatively high in supply and low in demand.

Less than an hour later the same image was bought on Fotolia at maximum XXL size which generated about $4 for me.

If the buyer had bought the XXL image on IS it would have cost them 20 credits or about $30. Over on FT the sale cost the buyer about $12, a worthwhile saving for the few seconds it would have taken them to find it if they first spotted it on IS.

Normally I would put such things down to coincidence but in this case, because of the low-selling nature of the image, the timing of the two sales and the sizes bought from each agency it does make me think otherwise. It appears that the buyer may be doing the initial searches on IS, to get the best selection, then buying XS images for comping purposes and, when they've made their choices, purchasing the full-size images from the most cost-effective source.

It would actually have been slightly cheaper for them to have bought it at DT, where the image has never sold, and a bit more expensive at StockXpert.

From the contributor's point of view as I've said I got $4 from the sale at FT but if they'd bought it at IS (as a non-exclusive) I'd have got about $6. Of course if I had been exclusive then I'd have made about $15 for that sale. Makes you think doesn't it?

Any thoughts?

I think they do. Most photographers upload the same images to all the stock sites and alot of the buyers know this. I've had similiar things happen. It's always one that hardly sales and suddenly sells on iStock then on one of the other Big 6. I do think they are shopping around especially on a low earner that hardly ever sales

1384
I personally don't look at the polls. I've never really noticed an increase or decrease in sales because of the polls.

No, I don't think the polls will affect your sales either, but what they are usefull for is to see if a new up and coming site is actually getting any sales.  If they are creeping up in the poll there is a good chance people are seeing results.  If a site doesn't have 50 votes, they are are are put below all the site WITH 50 votes.  New people to microstock can also easily see which are the big 6 and how the other sites compare to each other.  Bigstock DOES have quite a few more sales than say Veer right now, but it is impossible to know that if you are new to the industry unless you have something to quickly tell you like the polls.

People each vote a little differently perhaps, but that doesn't matter so much as they vote the same way each month, that way we can compare the results from site to site and from month to month.  I think the sites are all red because people's earnings were down in December compared to November.  I could probably explain more how to vote on the voting page though.
I have never voted. Where do you go on the site? Alot of photographers have different styles that work better at different sites...for me BigStockPhoto is by far a better earner that Fotolia. It depends alot on style and content. Thanks Leaf

Perseus....if that isn't a rambling statement I don't know what is....we all are effected by what is going on in the world...I don't need to ask my banker

 dongding whatever,

if you like to read something I did not compose , here are 3 Non- Rambling
sites for you to take your blindfold off.

I wish I could say I composed these rambles, but unfortunately I cannot take the credit for them.

But of course, you're still quite entitled to think everything is still American Apple Pie happy howdie doodie .
PERSEUS....did I say I thought the recession was over?? No I said I dont need to ask my banker to know the condition of this economy. The recession is not over by any means, I dont need the news cast telling me it is over to know that it is not. We lost our house...we lost our business of 17 years...we went BANKRUPT because of this economy. We do not live the American dream of the American Pie as you put it. We live from paycheck to paycheck. If you think that is the American Pie then you need to take a good look at how this has affected everyone. Next time think before you say.

Yeah, because 2 days for exclusives, 3-5 for independents really makes images less "fresh" at iStock.

Exactly. Do Dnavarrojr's marketing people consider a stock image to be 'so last week' once it's been on-line more than a few days?

Ha!

"Isolated apples are 'so last week'.  Studies show bananas are hot right now.  Thank god for SS's fast approvals!"
Now everyone is going to be flooding the market with banana shots!

Well I'll just let my $12.00 sit there since it's no where close to payout and if they go bankrupt...which at this rate they may very well be headed...I wouldn't be able to get it anyway. Hopefully maybe it'll jump up there for some weird reason and I'll actually get paid. This is my worst site BTW

I'm glad people still find my images although I didn't upload in a while.

I haven't uploaded anything substantial for the last couple of months because of camera problems...but they keep selling. Not as many as say you uploaded constantly but they do sell

General Stock Discussion / Re: South Dakota !?
« on: January 26, 2010, 13:02 »
You really have to be careful with keywording and iStock. If there is a keyword in there they don't feel pertains to the image they will reject the image.

They ADDED it !!!  :)

Good for you. Did you make a request to add the keyword?? I'm assuming you did since they added it

NO !!  I put 'SD',  they changed it to 'South Dakota',  then refused it because that 'Key Phrase' didn't fit the image !

Idiots !!  ;)

Whoops misunderstood that. I thought you were saying they had added it to THIER keyword database. I guess like sjlocke said they probably associate that with South Dakota because of its abbreviation

Welcome to the wonderful world of microstock....from looking at your blog and some of your portfolios it appears you know more about photography than most newbies. I'm sure you will have much success.

Gotta love those factories, just pumping it out and flooding the market.  Oh, all those guys with their "make money from micro" blogs.  It all comes together, eh?
Poor people think their going to become millionaires over night then when nothing happens there pictures just sit there gathering lots of dust with no sales.

My question exactly donding.

Received that email this morning and popped on to post it but found it here already.

Ok 123rf.. that answers in part the rejection reasons but...

1. My files are not corrupted. I don't say i never make mistakes but.. they are the same files from the same folder that is submitted to various others sites without a problem occurring. I suggest the problem must be happening at the 123rf system end.

2. It would have been nice if a note was left to this effect on the rejection page pointing out the rejection reasons at the time.

3. I would still like an explanation as to why a property release is required for a fictitious city skyline.
They must have gotten nervous about all the chatter on this sight about the rejections. We'll have to see if the address the property release question on here.

Why didn't he address the property model release question???
Ever watched a politician on TV answer a series of questions? He always picks the easiest one.  :P
You got that one right :D
