Almay for me has been cyclic, but worth it. I was grossing between $400-$800 a month (before my cut) years ago. Then it slowly started cycle downward to $25 to $400 a month gross today. Yes, some months are definitely better than others. All my images on Alamy are micro stock, and that could obviously be one of the areas to pump up my long term revenue ......building an RM port.
BTW, I was accepted as a video contributor and my port just went live a few days ago. I DO NOT expect any big wins but the best way to know is to try. Very cumbersome. You have to do a CSV that's every bit as difficult and preparing an image ....same stuff. But much more tedious on an Excel file. They only accept HD, not 4k. So I have to convert about 500 videos. I sent them a thousand on a small hard drive. They pull them off and send you back the drive. There is no file management. The only way to see your port is to do an advanced search on your name. Not sure yet how a sale looks on the financial side, whether it is reported manually of within my image financials. A learning curve for sure and they are far behind in technology probably because video isn't a core competency of theirs.
See what happens over the balance of this year.

I just put my request in to DT to drop me as an exclusive contributor. I'm planning to fire the operation back up and start shooting new photo and video footage, but to make it even remotely possible to make money on it, I'm going to have to join SS and IS and upload there as well. In addition, going forward, I plan to do some shoots and retain the whole of those in my own personal library of images, which will not be made available to any of these agencies, and will be available only through direct licensing with me. Still waiting on DT to come through with my request but it has only been since Thursday (Feb 25th).......
totally useless....another contributor? 1 million images week added...we need other contributor in ss and is? i hope sorry for you they stop adding contributor...is completely useless
Your comment is what is useless.

They could get 10-15 contributors to hire one attorney to represent them all. Not a class action....just a share of attorney.

Then there is the model release. If you have someone's finger in the photo (just their finger, no other identifying features) you have to take the time to create, upload and submit a model release.
Is it that strict really? I just had a photo accepted with some crowd in the distance, as RF without a model release..
Yep. I have had dozens of images taken offline later as "requires model release" that are feet, hand, etc. I had several deactivated by them of a close up of a business suit & tie, but the suit was on a hanger and stuffed with plastic bags to fill it like a human was wearing it. No body parts at all, only inferring that a person was actually wearing it. DEACTIVATED for "needs model release".

I don't know why people complain about Alamy and their upload process.
Let me explain why.
Because all saved keywords appear on the lower box. 1. Expressions are broken into individual words and you have to recreate the original expressions using quotes. 2.Then you have to select (copy and delete) the most important keywords to be pasted on the upper box 3. Then you have do go through another tedious selection for the middle box. 4. Moreover, instead of having limits based on number of keywords, like all other agencies, the limits are based on number of characters. You have to carefully select, sometimes more than once, what you want to move, in order to stay below these limits. 5. You have to go through a few additional tabs and click through more selections than required by any other agency.
It takes 5 minutes for each photo, instead of nothing (or a few seconds in the worse case)

And you only have so many characters in description and it automatically truncates it so you have to either shorten it or delete it and go with the second tab where you can put in longer descriptions. Then there is the model release. If you have someone's finger in the photo (just their finger, no other identifying features) you have to take the time to create, upload and submit a model release. Then if you accidentally say yes to property release the system automatically sets your sales type to RM. When you change change it back to no property release required, the system will not change back the license to RF, so if you forget and submit, you have to delete the image and start all over. Otherwise you have to remember to manually change it back to RF. Just a few more hassles to add on to what mr. talent posted.

Been two months since my last one. I used to get 3-5 a month. Now basically zero, with one SURPRISE every so often. They are done for me.
3-5 a month??? wow! annually accustomed to get one to four 28 every 4 months or single 85 dollars every two months. this past year to date , the only thing i get is 2.50 to 5.00 singles.
this is depressing. did ss replace those 28 dollars/85 dollars with lower cost??? is that why we now see 2.50 and 5.00 +- instead of 28/85 dollars???
That was a bit ago. Now is my 1-3 every 5 months. Believe me when I say I am very worried about what cuts will affect me next.

Here's the Pond5 Response to me asking about inclusion opportunity:
"We have received an overwhelming response, and unfortunately seats were very limited. At this time, we do not have any plans to add to our Membership Library just yet. Your best bet to be considered in the next round is to make sure that your portfolio is thoughtfully curated and high-quality. I will alert our Content team of your interest, but please understand this is not a guarantee of inclusion."

We don't know who the lurkers are here. I think there are lots of full timers that probably glance at this forum occasionally but don't waste their time posting.
This is true. I get site mails all the time here from contributors who do not post publicly. Some of my best information comes from those communications.

Invitation only? Hm. I hope that is just the first roll out phase and not a new two tier system for the favorites club and the masses.
But usually they are an artist friendly site, so I hope they have been thinking about us as well.
If I recall, it was "at this time" as if they aren't quite ready. I just dug into my account in preferences looking for an opt in, nothing there. I just site mailed them to find out more. Will post here when I find out.

Maybe you should upload that spectacular never-seen-before image of a birds flying in a heart-shape.
Oh Dumc, you forgot the rare mary jane images.

Are my files included? Can I dial them in individually?
How does this work for us?
If I'm not mistaken it's by invite only. I wasn't invited but I sure would like to know more about the program and how it might impact my existing sales and, more importantly, how I might be missing out on additional revenue opportunities.

I sent them a site mail and they said this:
"First off - many apologies in our delay, this is not the norm and we are working on this but understand this is not good enough.
Please bear with me while I enquire with our tax team regarding this."
Sounds like they don't have their internal tax process set up correctly to support their new "market place model".
I am still waiting. Sent that email on the 16th of Feb. Curious if anyone else in the USA has received their 1099.
As I understood it their new system would apply only to 2016. For 2015, I thought we were on our own for reporting our envato income.
I hope that is right. It would make sense given that I haven't seen any documents.

Only problem is that Adobe is publically traded and we know what kind of behavior that produces.

Perhaps photography as we know it will become obsolete. Why go the trouble of dealing with photographers when you can generate the precise image you need in CGI? Instead of putting out a brief on ImageBrief, just feed that description into the next generation image creator and out comes the perfect shot assembled from configurable components with some lighting algorithms applied. No ill-tempered models, shadows to annoy Shutterstock, fees, releases or cranky photographers.
The really scary time will be when news photographs are generated that way too!
CGI is more expensive than photography by quite a bit. It's much cheaper to hire a model to hold a baby than to create that same scene in 3D. Not to mention it will never look natural and you can differentiate it really easily. 3D renders have this stiffness/unaturalness about it and the moment you can make something close to realism, uncanny valley will rear it's ugly head.
I don't think 3D renders will ever replace photography.
I just met with a big company who makes bath products and we were talking about continuous improvement and cost reduction. The one area where they saved the most was in their photography. They eliminated virtually all of the photography and went with 3D renderings, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year on commercial photography. It's happening right before our eyes, in some markets at least.

Is this every year - meaning once you are established you can opt in to do this each year for however many years you wish?
What if you are an accomplished photographer but have not done this kind of work before? Those types need not apply?

I would keep the photos there. It doesnt hurt. Sale is a sale. Anyway DT was also one of the big earners and changed now. The same can happen with big earners now. I would keep my photos everywhere. Maybe next year DT is on top again. Mirco
This is very good advice. You already went to the trouble of uploading them. The way this industry changes from year to year, you never know who's gonna be up or down next. Year or two ago, FT was all but dead for me, and people pulling ports rigjt and left over DPC issue. Then Adobe buys them and now they are a great earner. DT is still owned by its original owner. He might sell out to a big company and then DT could be on top of the heap.
I agree. DT is still a somewhat fair agency, but I don t like how they've set up the search to spread the wealth because that means it is no longer about the quality (or usability) of your images. It is about volume. I have 2-3 big volume images that no longer get downloaded there. And, strangely, my old stuff has been selling in trickles lately. But if DT is in trouble, they are likely to be bought rather than simply closing down. So, for me it's not bad enough to yank my port yet.

Averages for the last three months or so...
Artbeats Express: $30 - 20 clips SS: $50 - 20 clips iS: $20 - 20 clips ME: $15 - 20 clips P5: $125 - 175 clips VideoHive Non-Exclusive: $250 - 40 clips VideoHive Exclusive: $850 - 267 clips
Just had a bunch of clips approved on VB so hoping I might get some action there. The majority of my stuff is motion graphics though, rather than footage, just so you know.
VB completely dead for me. Not a sale in 3 months going on 4 with about 1,000 videos.
Yeah, seems like it might not be the promised land that some are making it out to be. I've uploaded my core bunch of clips and we'll see how it goes. Quick question... do you get any kind of notification when you sell a clip, like the daily sales email on Pond5? That'll save me a bit of time checking every day!
Yes, they send you an email. You have some nice space clips. Well done.
