Dreamstime.com / Re: Commission on EL's at Dreamstime
« on: February 26, 2010, 11:29 »
Over 90% of images at DT are level 1 (official DT numbers) - so we can say that non exclusive commission is 30% for images directly sold by DT.
Per definition, higher level images sell much more, or they wouldn't be higher level. The bulk of my income on DT comes from higher level images. The level one sales I consider as a stepping stone to higher levels, so I don't care if they are 30 or 40%. Every sale is a sale, a step on the ladder to the real earnings level 3 and up. Anybody can reach that, even a beginner, because the perks are image-related and not-contributor related. And even if it is only 30%, why do you take 20% from IS (with no perks at all for independents) or from FT?

Warren: if posts on the DT forum are removed (buyers read those too, do you want to scare away buyers from DT?), at least you get personal attention from Achilles. Did you ever get personal attention from Chad on the FT forum when they silently phase out posts?
If you have problems with Achilles, take it up with him. He is very accessible.

Under 2% in New sites. Between 2 and 10% guess? Up and coming...
Why not down and going, or over the hill;)

It appears that there's also different %'s paid on EL's depending upon the image Level. The EL in question was Level 1, so payable at 30% commission, and presumably was bought via a credit package of about 2000 costing about 85c per credit.
Yes the level system (unique on DT) smooths out a lot. Actually, a max size sale of a level 3-5 image gives more than an EL of a level 1. The point Achilles always makes is to look at your average RPD and I'm still over my average for this month.

I'm not brand new to photography but I've been away too long. Do you guys know an easy way to prevent stained fingers when poking around in the developer fluid?

I am becoming thoroughly sick of these devious actions and the lack of transparency. Another major tick in the 'For' box regarding the question of exclusivity at IS __ at least the commission structure there is transparent.

I found the commission structure there less transparent since I get deviant cents for XS too on IS. It's all very transparent on DT if you look here: http://www.dreamstime.com/credits.

Have you asked over there?

Yes and Achilles confirmed that the 30% commission (announced earlier) had been rolled out in full. The actual commission you will get depends on how much the customer paid for the credit pack or custom credits, but it can go as low as 0.77$ for 25,000 custom credits.

For Gostwyck: my last EL (this month) on a level 1 image was this:
25 credits (2008)     $6.33     maximum     (U-EL)
This means the buyer paid 0.844$ per credit = 21.1$ for the image, of which 30% is exactly 6.33$.
Since the lowest price per credit on credit packs is 0.93$, it means the buyer bought a custom credit of 2,300$. Of course this is for 2010 credits, and I don't know how much that would be in 2008 credits. It's all too complicated but I trust them.

Guess I'll have to read more photography tips from you and Leaf.   ;D

Not really from me. I didn't even know the layer masks. I used it in an action for a long time, without realizing its potential. You'd better stick to Leaf. 8) You can do things in PS in several ways and it's always amazing to see how people do it differently.

To get back on track, there are other uses for swapping faces on images. Imagine a good shot where there are some faces you don't have a release for but is not newsworthy enough to be editorial. You then simply can swap heads in PS with the head of one of your released models.
That's why it's important not to throw your unused model images away but keep them. Some of those head positions might fit the head of your unreleased person. I used it once for stock for an aviation shot where (of course) I couldn't get a release from the crew. Image here.

I just had a sandwich for lunch.
Please explain further. How large a chunk did your stomach accept of that sandwich, and was it an Extended Sandwich or just an xsmall? Are parts of that sandwich still pending in your oesophagus? Please upload an image of that sandwich, a link to your blog about food shots, and of course, your referral link on DepositPhotos with a very wide blinking banner.

Leaf, didn't mean to detract from the video.  I am in awe of people with the talent to do such things.  It made me wonder if this is what you and FD were talking about in the blog/tutorial thread?
Writing short tutorials that address issues that pop up at any forum sooner or later, then are forgotten, till the next time a newbie bumps in. You can find the answers to all those questions if you have a lot of time to search the forum, here or elsewhere, but it would be nice to have it all in one place for quick reference.

So what?

thanks for the fashion lesson.  :) I haden't ever heard of the BCBG term before.
Well, having grown up in the fusion area between the two dominant European lifestyles/cultures, the Latin and the Germanic/Nordic one, has its advantages. Part of my family on mother's side was French-speaking and they were very BCBG. BCBG is even in the CV of iStock. It is preppy but also snob (sine nobilitas - without nobility).

In French snobbery is about the nouveaux riches (new money, new rich people by trade/commerce, with no noble ancestors and often not too educated) that tried to out-perform the old (noble's) wealth by an overdone, expensive lifestyle and fashion habits. Those bourgeois (plain but rich citizens) have been ridiculed well in Molire's play Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme (the middle-class/plain citizen gentleman). Another term would be social climbers.

Next time I'll entertain you about the differences between emo, punk  and goth  fashion/lifestyles if you're not too bored. Warren needs to absorb grunge first.  ;D

1437
I'm still trying to understand what "grunge" is.   ::)

Grunge:
1. US slang dirt or rubbish
2. (Music, other) a style of rock music originating in the US in the late 1980s, featuring a distorted guitar sound
3. (Clothing & Fashion) a deliberately untidy and uncoordinated fashion style

It"s the opposite of the French BCBG* or preppy.

* About the French acronym  bon chic bon genre or ("good style, good class"):

BCBG is a term originating from the Lyonnais region of France where the style has tended to be more conservative and preppy compared with the more avant-garde styles of Paris. The term BCBG is not necessarily construed as a compliment, since it has connotations of elitist snobbery, particularly when applied to young women. Consequently, the joke is often made that BCBG means "beau cul, belle gueule" (or, roughly, "nice ass, beautiful face" - though gueule is more literally translated as the muzzle/outward jaw of an animal, and thus more insulting).

Foam core rocks! Easy to hold and position and easy to afford.
Is that Styrofoam? It breaks easily when it's a bit larger and you hold it at the edges, or outdoors when there is some wind. I have some cheap reflectors made of a frame of glued thin plastic water tubing and roof insulation left-overs (one side aluminum foil, the other side thin flexible white foam) glued at the edges with contact glue. It won't break at all, and if the foil is pierced, you just glue another one on the plastic frame.

1439
Yes, but the risk (around $100) and the reward (thousands?) make it a bit more annoying if you spot it in action somewhere :)
Actually, I never saw anywhere a poster for 200$ or even 100$. But then, I don't hang out in malls, galleries or boutiques I can't (or I don't want to) afford.

LOL...thanks FD.  More people should show respect for us old folks.

As for 123RF their sales are about to go through the roof as someone sent me a PM here to tell me about the great photographer they've got featured this week  ;D
Ah! I just found out what I'm missing for stock. Good-looking models and a very strong fan.  ::)

Done a second hub, probably not going to get much traffic, as it is a place most people will never visit but it was fun to do.
For easy traveling, you might add the exact GPS coordinates of the landmarks. You can also draw traffic to the hub by uploading a shot (via Panoramico) on Google Earth community with a link to the hub.

For the record i am thinking about $50 per post if they are a decent length.  Does that sound like a fair amount?
Yes if it would be exclusive (Google hates repeated content in SEO) and if it would be substantial and useful, and not a (slightly) reworded content from somewhere else, or worse, stolen. I think the best thing would be to leave the pricing to you since you might burn your fingers on the concept. Some people would see this as an avenue for extra earnings, like many blogs are just for that. It should certainly not be about pimping too. You can set lower prices for content that is shorter. Some issues can be treated in just one screen.

General Stock Discussion / Re: what are RF? RM?
« on: February 24, 2010, 10:05 »
Quote
RF   Royalty Free is a license type for copyrighted material like images, music, video or art. The word Free is misleading. An RF license grants the non-exclusive right to use an image for a one time flat fee in an unlimited number of projects without recurring fees. The Royalty Free license also allows altering an image and creating unique works for one's own goals.
It does not allow creating derivative works for resale (for instance web templates), nor redistributing or making the images available either for free or for a fee.
Copyright remains entirely with the original owner at all times. In general, RF images are less expensive to license than RM images (see RM) but never offer exclusivity.

RM   Rights Managed is a license type for copyrighted material like images, music, video or art, for a specific price, period and use. This license is exclusive (negotiable), which means that nobody else can use the image during the licensing period but the copyright remains entirely with the original owner at all times.
In general, RM images are more expensive to license than RF images (see RF).

You can find more acronyms useful in stock in my Compendium.

No, it's not only for US residents.

Yeah, I would set you up with an author's account so you could write the article on the site, upload photos and get everything ready - submit for review.
In that case it's fine. Doing the proper layout in the chosen template is always half the work, especially if there are many images involved. Wordpress authoring is really easy for everybody, even novice. I'll get back to this later since I have some things to do soon.

leave the boat before it sinks !  :D
I'm looking for an affordable underwater house for my 5DII. In that case I would never leave a sinking ship but take pics on the way down. Very hard to repeat, and perhaps I'll get rich on iStock by all those 0.19$ sales.  :P
