iStockPhoto.com / Re: To go exclusive or not?

Once you go exclusive with iStock...can you decide it doesn't work for you then change it with a new portfolio or are you locked into it forever?

Off Topic / What would you do if your life was limited?
« on: January 18, 2010, 13:43 »
After watching the crisis in Haiti, it makes one wonder what you would do in a situation similiar to this. What decisions would you make if you were faced with life or death? One really wouldn't know unless they were in that situation and sometimes you would do things you would never think you would do. Personally I don't know what I'd do. I would truly hope I am never put into that situation, but something like this can happen anywhere at anytime.

I think I'll give it a try just to see what happens. I may and may not like it, but unless I try it I'll never know.

Off Topic / Re: Need your help-what text on my business card
« on: January 18, 2010, 12:26 »
I'm preparing my "stock" business card in different languages. I have some trouble to write English version - my English is very poor. The main purpose is to tempt models and restaurant chefs to work with me. I was thinking about something like this:
Do you need nice photos? Do you want  to immortalize your creation, a special event? Are you interested in modeling for stock  photography?   If your project interested me and we work  together you'll receive images from the photo session for your personal use for free
I'm worried about errors. I'd be very grateful if someone can give me any advice.
Thank you in advance.

Maybe you can create your design on the face of the card with all contact information, then offer your services on the rear of the card. That way you have an example of your work and contact information and your offerings all on one card.

One thing I haven't been able to see in camera's tiny screen is the depth of field. For example it's really difficult to judge if stopping down would benefit the image or not. When shooting tethered it's very easy.

I suppose it has to do with when and how you learn. When I learned photography there was no LCD on the body, computer monitors, etc. We used mental mathematics right before we clicked the shutter to determine our DOF, exposure, everything. You just learned to know your result before actually seeing your result and after awhile it just becomes nature to see the final image in your head.

Like I said tethering can be useful in a given situation. A person just doesn't want to get to the point where they have to rely on a process because then it only holds them back.
Sorry forgot to type. I never use the LCD except to preview. As for candid shots obviuosly you'd have to shoot from the hip. I agree you have to have the ability to do that. I just wish I could do that with the stock, but I can't seem to do it.

learn to see it in your head .. be one with the stock  ;)
The proper composition I can do....a least most of the time.. :), it's the lighting and proper point of focus I have sometimes have a problem with. They look right on the LCD on the camera but alot of times when looking at them at full view they don't look as good on the monitor. It is time consuming for me to have to zoom in on the camera. Maybe it's my computor monitor. Never really thought of that untill just now. I do calibrate it with Huey.

I personally shoot a bunch of shots then have to sit at the computor to sort through them to decide which shot is the best then go through editing. I would perfer to see the shots as I take them so I can see which ones are useable and be able to change what ever it is I'm doing wrong right then and there. For me I think it would be more helpful. I would have that monitor next to the area I'm shooting at. I would be using it to do stock not studio.

Any of you shot tethered. I never have but was doing research on it and here are a few sites with pretty good explanation and tethering software..

I've never tryed it but I'd sure like the ability to see those images on a computor monitor

Thanks CofkoCof....that was an interesting read

That still really doesn't make alot of sense. A person could attach any model release they have and attach it since the person is not recognizable.

you got it!
;o)
Yup ::)

Here's a couple of links to an inexpensive way to make your own lightbox for those of you that don't already have one. I have one and it works great.....good ol cardboard and bed sheets..

Wonder why they say that? The person isn't recognizable.

I ended up rooting for the Vikings...Hard choice but that was the way I ended up going.

what ever happened to people reading books and using common sense and study practices? Somebody mentioned using flickr to learn earlier in this thread. I'm not sure if I would recommend that .. considering that there are a billion photographers on there that don't have a clue. It seems you would risk learning bad habits and then have to break them later.
I agree I wouldn't use flickr. Ever Tom, Dick and Harry puts photos on there and besides there is the problem with people cutting and pasting or downloading your shots, thats why I removed all of mine. Also if you plan to ever go exclusive with iStock you'd have to remove them anyway.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: istock ratings - what do they mean?
« on: January 17, 2010, 15:26 »
Yes, that's quite true.

My top seller has no ratings at all - those with many high ratings have sold many fewer.
My top earners don't have ratings, it seems to be the landscape or scenic ones that get the 5 rating and those don't sell that often in the world of stock.

I had an antique version of filezilla....anyway I uploaded the new version and now every thing is fine. I was able to upload over night last night while sleeping. Now the fun of editing them all. Wish I could just click and be done.

Featurepics.com / Re: Anyone selling at Featurepics?
« on: January 17, 2010, 12:56 »
That's surprising, gbc, because I think other people closed their accounts in the past and received their money.

Yes madelaide I remember reading that on the forum there. I guess it all depends on rather you ask for it or not. I didn't ask since all I had was $5.60. It's really a shame that it didn't work out because Elena is really a nice helpful person. I see alot of photographers pulling out of featurpics.

I have some 5 rated photos on iStock and I don't see any real difference in sales. It's really just between photographers as far as I can tell

I'm torn between the two. I like Cowboys...formally being from the Dallas area.....and I also like the Vikings. So I guess whoever wins I'll be happy. It'll be interesting to see which way I end up going...more than likey for the loser which ever that may be.

In the U.S., the key to avoiding all this hassle is to have a Revocable Living Trust.  In this document you set up a trust where all your assets are recorded in the name of the trust and the trustees assigned (usually yourself and spouse).  You can then assign heirs to the trust and someone to act as executor.  This not only defines who will get what, but avoids both probate and taxes on the estate entirely.  The assistance of a good trust and estate lawyer are critical in setting up this document, but it can be well worth the cost.  Mine cost just a tad over $2,000; but, to avoid probate and taxes and to clearly define who get what from the estate, it's well worth the money.  The cost will vary from state to state, but should be in this ballpark.  And the trusts are portable.  That is, a trust written in one state will be recognized in any other.

I recently had occasion to go through this process, first when my father died which simply entailed a change from joint trustees to the surviving trustee (my mother in this instance), and shortly thereafter when my mother died and I became the sole trustee and executor of the estate.  Simply followed the instructions if the Trust and her Will and everything was done.  No probate.  No state or federal taxes.  Clean, simple and one less headache at a time when we didn't need any more problems than we already were facing.  I can't recommend strongly enough the need to get one of these as soon as possible.
You also have to remember to keep it updated. I even forgot we had one untill you mentioned it. It's over 10 yrs old and my children were still minors. They are both grown now with children of their own. Anyway your accounts...including checking, deed records and all that stuff would be recorded under the living trust

DepositPhotos / Does depositphotos support ftp upload?
« on: January 16, 2010, 17:41 »
I've been trying to upload through FileZilla
I put  "ftp.depositphotos.com" as the ftp address and then my user name and password, but it keeps saying can not connect.
Either I'm very stupid or BLIND, but I can not find where to upload on the site either?

heh did you get paid after your photos make it through the initial exam or only after they make in through the pending stage? I got approved but it doesn't show any money.

I used to be a spy but for the moment I just try outsourcing between East and West. On my many travels I took snapshots that amazingly, sell well. For the moment, I just shoot handshaking people with headphones behind light boxes. One day I plan to be Pope. In the mean time, I'm a Flemish Independence fighter but as for now, I'm writing a lifestyle comedy book together with an American society writer.

I'm not sure about the Pope thing though.  ;)

Go for the pope thing... ;D

iStock is good for rejecting images for something minor then when you resubmit, they reject it for something else. I personally wish they would tell you everything they see rather than just the one thing and save you the trouble of resubmitting and resubmitting. Most of the time they make it through. For instance I had submitted a photo which had a person in it and they rejected it because I forgot the model release. I understood...my fault...resubmitted with model release and then it was rejected for something else. So they are good for that

If I don't make a cent on my photos during this little adventure, that's ok with me. The thought of complete strangers looking at and buying my photos sounds thrilling, so I want to try it.

I also want to learn and grow as a photographer, and take even better pictures. This method seems like a good way to do it, since it really seems flexible time wise.

Then you should join flickr, or another website when people comment on each other's images.  Licensing stock imagery is a business that should be taken seriously, even more nowadays then a few years ago.

once more, wise old Mr Locke has hit the nail on the head...
yes, flickr is where you should start .
Personally I wouldn't recommend flickr...I've had problems with people downloading or copy and pasting those photos. I took the ones that matter off there.
