Payoneer / Re: Payoneer virtual acc
« on: February 24, 2010, 08:41 »
No, I also use Payoneer to get funds from IS, and other companies. You can also use it to get funds from Veer.
That's cool, but I miss my biggest earner on it, Shutterstock.

I think you missed the nudge nudge wink wink in his post  ;D
Well I got a bit scared of Warren. He sounds so stern.  ;)

That is a one way path.  With masks you can go back to correct a missed detail, not to mention brush opacity and the opportunity to run a blur on the mask.
Sorry to look dumb, but you can go back in the history, and you can set your erase brush opacity and softness too. Not that I doubt this is a better way perhaps. I was just wondering.

No, it's not only for US citizens.   I have the virtual account since it was a pilot program.
The Dreamstime Payoneer card at the other hand is for anybody anywhere, I read. It's just a pity it's only useful for Dreamstime earnings.

I always wondered why people use layer masks for this. Isn't erasing at the edges of the faces much faster and easier?

boy, with all you eager writers here - if you ever want to write something for the microstockgroup blog - let me know.  I have been trying to write 1 article/week and have kept up most of the time, but it wouldn't hurt to have a bit more.

I've been brooding on a couple of simple tutorials for a while, things that pop up all the time on forums. I don't like to put them on my own site since that smells like pimping.  ;)
The Dreamstime blog would be a good outlet but blogging there is very limited since you can't insert external images, something vital for tutorials. What is your platform? How easy is it to insert images and control the layout? I'm used to Wordpress. Do we need an author's account on the MSG blog or how does it work practically?

If you want to get paid to write, the best site IMHO is constant content. You set a price and people looking for content will buy it. When I have time to write, I make more there in a month than all the ppc sites put together.
....
Note this is not a referral link, just a link to my content and profile.

I will ask your referral in PM.

Canon / Re: Canon EOS-1D mark IV Review
« on: February 24, 2010, 03:02 »
For me, it's a perfect camera as my primary source of income in the photography world has been weddings.  I also was shooting some sporting events and have a big focus on wildlife.  All of those subjects require speed.
...
If I were to buy a camera specifically for stock it would be the 5D Mark II.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
+1
The 1D I borrowed was with the famous 50mm prime of Canon and the guy shot weddings, events, concerts in available light (not for stock) and he had a leading edge on people with lesser cams. I prefer my 5DII for well lit stock in optimal conditions and I wouldn't dream to walk around with a heavy 1D in those circumstances. For every task the proper tool. (I could also add I can't afford the 1D with the 50mm).

Most useful post + 1 heart.

1462
Could you please clarify that?   ;D ;D ;D
What? Who? I didn't mean you in any case. Sales info in general can be very useful, like in the monthly sales report. I just mean those starting a thread with the sole reason to pimp their bloggie or to add their referral codes in the message body. The few obnoxious spammers I already blocked anyways.

1463
I really hate the guts of spammers and pimpers. They make me lose time. Lately this site acquired a few blatant (sometimes hidden) referral spammers that will take advantage of any thread to say nothing useful but to dump their egg. They make me lose more time by having to clean my cookies before signing up on a new site. I want to choose my own referrals, and those are people I either like or have a history of posting useful info. As 'useful info', I don't consider "yay I had a sale, 200 images uploaded, approved at DP". I don't want to be trapped into being a referral for a moron.

Those blatant low authority/low info/high spamming "posters" should be banned like at most sites. Of course you can block them, which I do, but their empty messages still do pop up and the "new threads" they spam in too. Portfolio links in the sig should just be portfolio links, and not hidden referrals. Certainly those obnoxious large banners in the sig should be made impossible.

Agencies should leave the system of contributor referrals. That might have been useful ages ago when stock was unknown. But now when everybody and his brother signs up to 20 sites, there is no need for it any more. Referral earnings take away part of my income by people that in most cases just live from spamming. The only valid referral should be a buyer referral.

Check the free online dictionary. That's faster for all of us since we don't have to crawl through useless messages. Fruit.

DepositPhotos / Re: Does depositphotos support ftp upload?
« on: February 23, 2010, 14:24 »
Anyone know of a shortcut for submitting them in bulk from the Unfinished area, or do you have to edit each one, assign categories, and submit individually?
I FTP-ed 300 at a time and assigning categories was easy since I submitted similar-category images in a row by clicking on the small square thumb at every image. Only categories are inherited then (no models) and what really slowed me down is assigning releases for every image. There is no bulk release assign possibility.

What took me most time is reinventing the titles in case I entered something in the 'headline' IPTC field, since that field precedes the 'object name' field for title. Quite off-standard for stock. Also annoying and slowing you down is that you get erroneous error messages when title or description include non-alphanumeric characters, like quotes.

Whatever, I got my 111$ today and I will lay the site to rest now. I don't have high expectations as to sales the moment buyers will actually have to pay for their images. Right now, you can just sign up and get 150 images for free, for which the contributors are payed. This is an avenue that nobody mentioned here in the referral folly. Find or create a number of "buyers" that will "buy" your shots and you can easily get 100$ extra.

The clock sounds to tick when the referral program is over and when buyers will have to pay. The moment of truth is August 1 when the 6 months are over, since I don't upload any more. A sub sale every week like on CanStockPhoto isn't good enough.

Canon / Re: Canon EOS-1D mark IV Review
« on: February 23, 2010, 13:38 »
Is anyone shooting with the 1D series bodies?  1Ds or 1D?  I have thought sometimes that it might be nice with a bit better focusing, but really is it worth it over the 5D?
I did last August, on a local photographer's jamboree. I wasn't happy at all about the focusing and it is very heavy. When I got my own 5DII later, my images were much sharper. But I didn't use a monopod with the 1D, and I didn't have time to really play with it.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Rejection: accurate shoot description
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:55 »
speaking about the date, the new rule now that it should say explicitly "shoot date" rather than just "date". I've got several rejections last/this week for the reason my release was missing "shoot date", despite the date entered 3 times

Yes the Getty/iStock release makes a distinction between the
Date signed (dd/mm/year) ________________________________________
Shoot Date (dd/mm/year) _________________________________________

For the shoot date I filled in December 1-4, for the date signed December 4. It's a bit logical since you can do the paperwork later (not recommended) and since the shoot date can be a (short) period, and the date signed cannot. Unless you are a very slow writer, the signing is one specific date.  ;)

I have the slightly modified (fonts, country of jurisdiction) Getty release in MS-Word format here. All sites I upload to have accepted it, included IS of course.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Rejection: accurate shoot description
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:36 »
Note that the date must be filled in and although it can be a range of a few days, it can't be "various" or "2010"
Last December I did a 4-day shoot with 2 models that came far out of town, especially for the shoot. We planned 2 days but it turned out they liked it so it lasted longer. I made the release on the end of that short period, and IS accepted it.

I used the slightly modified Getty model and attached photos of the models signing the release. The shoot description was "various business, medical and lifestyle shots indoors, fashion and lifestyle outdoors". All agencies always have asked for a shoot description, so nothing new here.

For nudity or adult shoots there are additional rules, I have read, amongst those an official ID. Those certified releases must be kept by the agent that publicizes the images. In that case, I would make a separate release for the nudity shots. In short the IS requirements are very clear and straightforward. You just have to read the pages on site that concern releases. No disambiguity there.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Why is 123rf doing this?
« on: February 22, 2010, 12:41 »
I just uploaded a batch of 10 to 123RF and all went fine without any glitch, as it is always the case. I can and could always log in and check my earnings. I never had negative earnings and they pay out automatically between 55 and 80$.

The site is programmed well, they have the best Model Release module around and they don't have categories. Their rejections are a bit odd regularly, but that's their loss and not mine. It takes no extra effort to upload there and finishing on site is done in one minute. In short, a low maintenance site with no drama.

They pay me a nice seafood dinner for two every month, plus a nice cold bottle of beer of 1l (making me very happy, toasting to Alex), plus the taxi forth and back. Some months it's a bit less, some months a bit more.

I don't have any idea about the glitches reported here. Maybe it's a browser issue? I use Filezilla + Firefox.

I've added four images here. I'm not sure you will be able to see it without having an account.

I guess so since I land on a page about an Iceland project. It's a nice and well programmed site, and I'm sure you'll get a warm feeling being there. But does it make money?
We all need to focus on our work and on our sites that sell. You can drown, if you want, in forums, community sites, show-sites, that give you "exposure" and no money. At the end of the day, it's the money that counts so perhaps this is another waste of time?

Those pulling their art from other sites are still in a good position: they are closer to exclusivity, which I think is a very wise decision.
For me, it seems like a dirty trick of IS. Pushing people to commit to them as exclusive, pulling their ports everywhere so they can be grandfathered, then just say, well, we didn't mean it really.
What's next? Bumping you behind in the best match because you don't allow thinkstock sales?

I still got three days worth at the 10 MPH speed limit sign. ;D
Ah well, per week it's still 4.5 times more than iStock. It's also better not to dump all at the same time but spread you risk of acceptance and also to stretch your exposure on the newest photos.
