Yes, the search engines rule first and foremost (on the big sites anyway), not quality, that is secondary.
On a huge site like Pond5 it doesn't matter if you upload the best New York time lapse the world has ever seen since there are hundreds of clips with hundreds of sales that will show up before you in search no matter what you do.

Shutterstock: 22% of my earnings but I sell mostly footage, not so many images.

For music - October was my BME (since 2012).
For footage/images - November was BME (since 2014).

I always assumed they report sales once every 24 hours, just like Pond5?
Anyway, 3rd best month this year, 5th best since 2014 when I started uploading. So I suppose it's quite OK.
The reviewing system is a bit strange, and you never feel like you know what's going on... Tagging is really fast however.

I mostly do photography/filming when I'm traveling, and selling the footage is a great way to pay for the trips and equipment that I would want to buy anyway since I love being out making time lapses, filming wildlife etc.
Also, $1,000 income effectively means $2,000 since I put all traveling and equipment as business expenses. If I hadn't sold the footage and had a business for it I would have to pay tax + employer fees before I could use the money for traveling and equipment.

The lowest amount I've gotten for footage is 3.84 but that was just one time. It's almost always 17.50-28.

I agree with the others:
Nice images, terrible keywording and descriptions...
Regarding the washed out look, a lot of buyers want that so in my opinion it's not necessary to crank up vibrancy. A lot of trendy advertising (at least in Europe) uses washed out images that are more "real/authentic" than so called "perfect stock photos".
You can always mix it up. Two images, same location/subject: one indie/washed out, one high contrast/cheesy web ad.

This is how you turn a pirate into a buyer:
You have a product that you cannot find for free anywhere.

Do what you want. You asked for genuine replies and you received them. If your goal is to help poor people I think there are more effective ways than to give away digital illustrations though...

In reality I think you just create a much greater risk for piracy with people downloading those illustrations and later selling them as their own. I've seen it happen hundreds of times...
It happened to me when I decided to do a little free experiment. Very annoying to see my stuff pop up on the very same sites I sell on, effectively stealing business. So free really backfired...
And to be honest, I don't think illustrations are high up on the list of things that someone who is struggling to pay rent needs to get...

Serious question: Why do I get $4 sales on files that cost $5, $2.4 sales on files that cost $3, etc... And that's before you deduct your shady fees and taxes..
1. 20% so called buyer fee. 80% of list price remains. 2a. 55% author fee if non-exclusive after that. 2b. 12.5%-37.5% author fee if exclusive. 3. U.S. tax if from a non-treaty country, a country with >0% tax treaty or if you haven't filled out the forms.

Looks quite good coming from just 80 clips, although I can't see how you're getting $11.66 avg from VH unless you're exclusive selling 90% 4k...
Anyway, the relationship between the sites looks quite normal I suppose (I sell more per DAY on certain sites than per year on others). Pond5 is a huge site with many, many buyers but it's not really a good place for newcomers. Most people who get good sales have been there for many, many years.
Their library is just too enormous and the search engine does not favor new clips with 0 sales at all. It takes years to be seen there. Luckily, that's not the case with some other sites.
However, if you'd been at P5 for 5-10 years and had clips with 10+ sales you would see quite a bit of action... Too bad you can't go back in time.

is there someone who earn more ?
Sure, but from what I hear Zazzle is close to a full-time activity for them. Constantly updating items, making new ones, promoting etc. etc. etc... Clean illustrations will probably do better than photographs.

It's ok to sell, but I think you would experience about 1% of the sales from the micro stock sites... Unless you're doing very mug friendly work.

It's normal right now. Some ftp problems. Sometimes it takes a couple of days but they will show up. Just be patient.

According to what I've found scouring the web and talking to banks so far it seems to be just as you say.
I could request checks too, but the fees to cash them here can be quite high (probably cheaper than 2.5% though) but the added hassle, delays, and security risks sending checks in the mail makes it not worth it I believe.
It is possible to open a US bank account as a foreigner (I had one before), but I'm afraid there might be taxation problems and the US might think the money needs to be taxed there since it arrives there. Does anyone know for sure?
PayPal is of course extremely convenient, but 2.5-2.7% is just a sizable chunk...

PayPal's currency conversion fees are currently 2.5% for me, which adds up to substantial amounts over a year.
Has anyone found a better alternative? I am in the EU. I have been talking to my bank about opening a USD account so that the bank does the conversion (0.5% fee), which would save me lots of $$$, but I have read that PayPal won't send US dollars to other countries without converting to the local currency first. Even if the account is a dollar account.
As far as I can tell, Payoneer and Skrill are the only real alternatives, but they don't seem to offer anything better, or do they?
It would be great to find a currency exchange company that accepts PayPal USD and could convert for maybe a 1-1.5% fee.
Or are we stuck with the PayPal monopoly and incredibly high fees?

October and November are normal for me. Nothing amazing, but like most months. June and July were pretty dead however...

It's not a big mystery.
The e-mail goes out reporting "In the last 24 hours..." so it can be a bit late.

I haven't taken a lot of notice of what's going in on this site, only to go in and get a pay out from time to time. I have just been and had a look and of about 140$ earnt in the last 30 days about 40$ was deducted in tax and 77$ deducted in fees leaving me with 23$ !! I'm sure it didn't used to be like that. Has something changed. I think I used to average about 70$ a month before not 23 !!
It's because you haven't filled out the tax forms. Same forms you have to fill out at Shutterstock, Dreamstime etc. They are withholding 30% US tax and if you are non-exclusive your normal rate would be 36%. The big problem here is that they probably withheld 30% tax from 80% of the sale price (BEFORE author fees) which of course is what everyone is pissed off at. Simple solution is to fill out the tax forms and hope you're from a 0% tax treaty country.

Splendid. Waiting for my first to roll in. If it happens 1/10 or at least 1/20 sales I would be happy.

Not really a place for footage right? Seems to be 99% animations.

Your video gallery is very impressive! However, I was wondering how you did the dolly shots? Do you use any extra equipment, or just handhold your camera?
I guess you answered your own question... Those shots are made using a slider or a small dolly.

The engines may be smaller but there's also much less wind resistance because of the flat design.
For me, a Mavic would mean getting hundreds of shots I would not get at all, since I wouldn't bring a big drone. I'm using the Phantom 3 Pro right now, and while I wish the video quality was better, it's pretty good for HD in most situations with even lighting (morning/evening). The Phantom 4 camera is really no different (except for MORE sharpening in-camera, not desirable).
I would of course like a step UP in video quality, but if the Mavic offers something close to the P3P/P4 the size and portability will most likely make up for it. I guess you can't have it all... I would love to use an Inspire RAW but it's just a complete hassle to bring when you travel (planes, other countries, hikes, etc.).
Being able to put it in your pocket is a pretty big deal. Carrying the P3P along with all other camera equipment up a mountain gets old quickly and means leaving the drone at home...
