There's "royalty free" hard coded in files

archive-image.php

and

Inc\Classes\network-manager\interpreter.php

You can edit it like I did for my site or just wait for Leo. I believe he is onto it for the next version of the theme.

General Stock Discussion / Re: GPS In Cameras - Question

You're welcome. - This is on my to-do-list for a while. So, if you happen to play with it before me I'd be interested in some first hand experience report. If I am first I'll let you know how it went.

General Stock Discussion / Re: GPS In Cameras - Question

I'm curious about the technology in general.

So given you have a separate GPS with a timestamp in sync with your Camera, theres software that will put the two together in metadata?

From http://www.geosetter.de/en/ website:

Quote
Description

GeoSetter is a freeware tool for Windows (XP or higher) for showing and changing geo data and other metadata (IPTC/XMP/Exif) of image files (e.g. images taken by digital cameras).

and

Quote
Synchronization with track files (NMEA, GPX, PLT, Sony LOG, IGC and others)

And that's just an example for such sync software. Caution, though: I haven't tried it yet and can't tell how
(good) it works...

General Stock Discussion / Re: GPS In Cameras - Question
« on: August 06, 2013, 23:32 »
I got one point&shoot camera with GPS but most time the GPS takes much longer to determine position than it takes to snap that image. BUT there is software out there that can synchronize data from a full-blown GPS device with your images by date/time stamps adding the GPS position to EXIF data of images taken. I am going to do that for my next road trip. - It would be nice if at some point Symbiostock could use GPS EXIF data to show location on a (google) map. Although I don't know if buyers really care and are just waiting for such a gimmick...  :-\

I just looked on my tablet nd my desktop and they also look the same. I am confused why you have the Categories where they are located. It is very distracting for me and I have to go down to see any samples of your photographs.

It seems to look like this on my desktop as well. Also, your footer (?) columns are not side by side but below each other. All in all it gives a somewhat garbled appearance. No idea, though, why. What have you done?

156
Hi Shazam,

I just spent some time looking over your site.  Looks great!  Here are a few thoughts I had:

I don't think you need the colorful bar across the top with the under construction message.  Just my opinion but I think it is distracting and the homepage would look much cleaner without it.  As you said, the site will always be under construction behind the scenes and it looks great now and seems to function well.  No need to apologize for the appearance.

In your footer, on the right hand side you could/should add some links to outside authority sites.  It could even be links to your twitter, facebook etc. profiles. I would also add in the footer section somewhere a link to a privacy policy statement.  It's unlikely anyone will click on any of your footer links but these will give your site legitimacy in the eyes of google and help your seo.

How did you increase the number of images displaying on searches?  Did you use the plugin that Leo made or did you do it some other way?

Are you planning to add your own watermark?  How about a picture or logo for your symbiostock icon?

I liked the addition of the "this image is protected by copyright..."  I think I may add something like that.

I didn't read every word but I didn't see any obvious typos or anything.

I more or less agree with CrackerClips.

I have to add that the mouseover icons below vertical or square images with that exclusive banner on top show up mixed with content below (Firefox/Windows 7).

Good site, great images. Would network with you but my 10 slots are filled  :(

Thanks Ron! This have been stop me for using bulk action. But now I want to enable comment for all images, I need to use the bulk action, if confirm it won't affect the SEO I will just ignore the red status, it is too much work if need to click update for all image.

It must be analyses only. But it does explain a lot. I had the same thing happening to a bunch of images. And could never figure out why only those. But now I know, that were the only images I batch edited. Problem is, you need to go back to every image and click update for it to turn yellow or green again. But I figured its only an analyses, because the SEO is all still there.

That Yoast status measures your page content in relation to the focus keyword(s) you set. That's just to show YOU how good your SEO is when someone searches for the keyword(s) you have defined. Change that keyword and Yoast will give you a different status. And I guess that's what's happening when you bulk edit. But there's no reason to worry because your page content will still be the same (good or bad).

Are you sure that's all what defining a focus keyword does? I always thought that focus keyword would be included in some meta data on the image page. Can someone more familiar with the internals of Yoast SEO confirm one or the other version?

Yes, I'm sure. The only function the focus keyword has, is to show you how good or bad your page will perform in relation to that keyword. It's only a measurement tool and the focus keyword will not do anything good or bad to your actual page. It can't because it doesn't even get published.
Boy did I misunderstand what that focus keyword is for. I thought it would help SEO, but its only to analyse if I implemented the focus of my image properly. Ow boy. Thats a lot of work done for nothing.

Yes, I was misled, too. Good that we have MSG and active discussions with better informed people! Thank you all for clarification of this.  :D

How I moved - step by step.

Thanks for exploring this new frontier and your report. That might come in very handy one day.

To add to the confusion:

I calculate my RPI not by images I have online but by images I have submitted. After all, I spent money and work time also on those images that have been rejected, thus they need to be part of the equation as well. This way I can't even fool myself by deleting those "25% worst dogs".  ;D

So depending on what you shot, mode of submission (only the best, everything, whatever...), rejection percentage, etc. RPI varies widely. Comparisons with other photographers don't help you much. But watching your RPI over time can give you insights about your/your agencies progress...

Actually, that could be a good strapliine - "Redefining Stock", "A New Approach to Stock Images", that sort of thing.

For once, such a statement would actually be true both from the point of view of what SymbioStock has already done, what it offers currently and the way we go about things from here on in..

I like this idea. I hope I remember these straplines when I get around writing a few lines for my SYS site.

@Leo: Just in case you missed it. I stumbled upon the text string "Go to royalty free image." used in file Inc\Classes\network-manager\interpreter.php. (version 2.55)

Symbiostock - General / Re: Organic search %
« on: August 03, 2013, 21:32 »
Very similar picture here.

Organic search: 46.2%
Referrals: 35.8% of which about one quarter came from symbiostock.info.

Bounce rate is almost 75% for search traffic compared to 50% for referrals.

164
Glad you like it :)

Similars are described in the help here: http://stock.imagerion.com/syxtra/thumbnails-widget-help/

In short - putting widget on image page and checking the Display Similars will show you similar images RELATED to that active, 100% similars are available only by using the Master Tag (see my site)

Maybe I should change the name, help page about the Master Tag will show up soon.

Categories are collapsed for search to show the pics not the list. I understand you may not like it that way, so the planned feature to disable or change the behaviour moved up on the list.

Thanks for your clarification.

I will play with Display Similars. How does search order (e.g. random) work with Display Similars checked? Shouldn't similars get ordered by degree of similarity (however that is measured)?

I don't even know yet if I like the collapsed categories or not. So it's definitely no biggie. I am not going to deactivate your plug-in because of that. I like the mouseover previews too much.  :D
It is just that I worked in my own solution for this problem spot. I changed the text of the theme and added a local link for jumping down to the network results. Now with your plugin and collapsed categories my solution looks somewhat silly :-[. I'll have to think about this and see what I'll do here. Some option to change the behavior would be appreciated in any case.

Edited:
Yes, Categories on my Author Page are gone as well. I guess this must be an unintended side-effect called a BUG!!!   :o

165
1. I understand that

2. I can't find where I came up first. Maybe in one of the endless bug stomping threads? But it has been discussed later again. e.g. here (briefly): http://www.microstockgroup.com/symbiostock-technical-support/darn-categories

Added: I checked your website again and found e.g. that lovely tiger having a keyword "nature" with slug "nature-2". But doing a search with keyword nature found the tiger. I can only guess that meanwhile Leo dealt with the issue and it's no problem anymore.

I'd wait for Leo's premium plugin and see what the new search can do. Also the batch editor of the coming premium plugin should make adding/changing keywords much easier.

3. I have only edited the keyword slug of those keywords affected. That fixed the search for me. No need to delete and reupload images.

4. I am not at all a WP expert. So I am guessing here: Our images are custom type posts so their taxonomy is custom type as well (although with most (all?) the features (and troubles) of the WP standard taxonomy). I guess that is where you got confused in the menu configuration?

166
I am at around 400 right now but still have 3000 to add. Hope I manage to do 200 to 300 in August. My goal is to have 1000+ pics online by end of September.

167
I learn something every day! Didn't know I could collapse/uncollapse image categories here. Guess I have to tweak my css again as this feature is completely hidden unless you click in the right spot.

So is this a SYXtra feature? Or did it come unnoticed with some SYS update? Is there a way to have the categories uncollapsed by default?

168
I just downloaded and installed SYXtra plugin. Great work! I love it especially for the mouseover previews.

I noticed a couple of issues, though:

- Similars on image page (using the widget) don't show similars, just anything. Maybe I did something wrong?

- the categories list on no search results doesn't show anymore. Bug or feature?

169
Glad to hear you could solve your problem.

Don't be too sure about your point 2. AFAIK the problem of images with "...-2" slugs not showing in search is still not solved.

170
The categories menu links still don't point to same url as categories (as on categories page). How did you configure your menu? That's maybe where the actual problem lies...

Symbiostock - General / Re: Organic search %
« on: August 02, 2013, 23:43 »
I love the symbiostock model but I would have liked to see the integration of sites that are using other scripts be included into the network, then I believe that many more users would definitely be on board.  Not sure how that can happen though if it is not wordpress.

The buying process is too clunky with SY/WP. I can't see the SY network taking off as a viable option for buyers when they have to register for every site they visit. I think the best option currently available is for photographers to join up with Photoshelter and merge together into a virtual agency, which has been done repeatedly by others. Their SEO is pretty weak, but the buying process being smooth is absolutely imperative and I just don't think there is a better option than a Photoshelter virtual agency at this time.

I believe that it is possible that the code for Symbiostock be changed so that registration is optional.

I have been with Photoshelter for three years. Sold 2 pics but spend almost a fortune  >:(. They say their SEO, system, network reels in buyers. Well, not for me obviously. I didn't want to be without my own image website ready to sell, so I started looking for alternatives and had just started tinkering with CMS account Photo Video Selling Script when Leo announced the idea of Symbiostock. I instantly dropped the CMS account script because of the open source, community driven, networking, SEO features of Symbiostock. Never looked back.

Granted, there are still huge drawbacks to overcome, one of these being the registration process. But Symbiostock is not even half a year old and is being developed at a pace that can make people dizzy. Can you even imagine where we will stand by end of this year? I can't. But I am confident Photoshelter, kTools and co. will have a hard time competing. Just watch if you don't want to jump in now.

Here are the scenarios I see Symbiostock could developing into:

worst case: further development stops soon and virtually no image buyer cares. I will have virtually no sales but my images website at a fraction of the price tag of Photoshelter. Not too bad. But is it really worth the effort?

likely case: some of us are already there and reporting sales volume in the middle tier range. Quite possible Symbiostock will show such results for most of us soon. Good. Worth the effort? Maybe not saleswise but it feels good and gives you hope for the time coming when microstock falls apart for contributors because the best case scenario might come true some future day.

best case: Symbiostock develops into a game changer of this industry. Middlemen are cut out. Eventually even SSTK stock will crumble. Hilarious. Definitely worth the effort.

Back to work on ImagoBorealis now.

Thank you, Stephan, for spotting and pointing out the difference.

I thought, that I processed the animal images in the same way as the others. One possible difference is the SLUG. Slug for animals image keyword is "animals", whereas slug for animal image category is "animals-2". Does anybody know how are the slugs used and where are these definitions stored?

It has been discussed before somewhere that the keyword/category slugs need to be unique. In case you have keywords that match your category names trouble starts: WP automatically adds a "-2" to the later slug with weird outcome. e.g. a keyword with a slug such as animal-2 wouldn't show in search for "animal". Your case is the other way around. I can't remember having read someone else had issues like you but it could very well be the root of your problem.

To avoid such conflicts I have renamed all my category slugs to "image-category-whatever". I think this little extra effort has saved me a lot of headache.

174
Your menu is not pointing correctly to that animal category. It is looking in /category/animals/ whereas your hippo and coon are found in /image-type/animals-2/. I have no clear idea what might have caused this, though...

175
Bluehost works flawless for me. It's cheap, too. But pretty slow. Guess you get what you pay for  ::) They have every option to upgrade your hosting plan, of course. I'll wait for a buying frenzy before I upgrade, though  ;D
