iStockPhoto.com / Re: 100% Royalty Day May 14, 2014
« on: May 15, 2014, 06:37 »
How'd the day go for exclusives? As an indie, this was the first time in many months I had a zero download weekday.

Average day for me, nothing special.  The bonus should be more than I would normally expect from the PP, but not as much as I would expect from GI...

Site Related / Re: Disappearing posts
« on: May 14, 2014, 05:22 »
I'd agree that automatically hiding posts because they get voted down seems unnecessary... but perhaps some people prefer it that way, I don't know.

However, you can change that setting in your profile - it allows the options of "Hide", "Grey Out" and "Nothing", as I recall - so perhaps if Leaf would just change the default to "Nothing" rather than "Hide", then anyone who really feels they would prefer not to see negatived posts could choose for themselves.

Well, my April sales were poor, but May seems to be starting out storming.  5 sales on a Sunday!  Haven't had that many sales on a weekend day for years, I usually count myself lucky if I get one.

We shall see how it continues...

If you use Google Calendar, you can add the entire years worth of request dates and corresponding payment received dates, allowing for Canadian holidays (when the dates usually change to Tuesday) and set reminders for yourself if you want.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Heartbleed bug!

^  Click on the lastpass icon in your browser, then select "Tools" and "Security Check".  It will open a page with an offer to take their "Security Challenge".  Click the button.

It will then scan all the passwords in your vault and report on how secure it thinks they are, duplicates and the like (might take a while).

After this, it will give a report which includes any sites it found in your vault which are known to have been vulnerable, and whether or not they have been fixed.  If they have, it will recommend you go change your password - if not, it will suggest you wait.

Lastpass, if you're signed up for it, has a test for sites in your vault and tells me:

FAA - Fixed, you can change your password now
Pond5 - Not yet updated, wait before changing password

Presumably then iStock, SS and Alamy are OK as I have them in my vault too and they weren't flagged.

Sites that no longer exist / Re: Clipcavas bye bye
« on: March 27, 2014, 11:18 »
Well, I for one hope they pull through - they've sold a few of my clips in the past and I would be sorry to see them fail, they pay decent rates.

I think I'll go upload a few more to them now...

Off Topic / Re: Windows XP Support Ends April 8th
« on: March 19, 2014, 05:36 »
Last year I had occasion to replace a laptop with a newer version.  Unfortunately it came pre-loaded with Windows 8.  I struggled with it for about a month and finally threw up my hands over the beyond useless OS.  I took it in to a friend of mine who runs a computer repair business.  Together we stripped out Windows 8 and replaced it with Windows 7, upgraded the appropriate utility drivers and all has worked fine ever since.  Makes you wonder when people are willing to get rid of the "latest and greatest" technology and spend money to go back to older versions that actually work and make sense.

I understand this is no longer an option for most computers as they have changed the utilities such that Windows 7 drivers no longer work with them, only Windows 8 drivers.

I'm no fan of Windows 8 either, but in fact Windows 8.1 can now be relatively easily configured to make it similar to Windows 7 in use - there are even add-ons to re-instate the Start button and menus, without which I found it just too painful to use.

It's also faster in my experience, and less hassle with new hardware additions...  worth another look anyway, though I haven't yet got around to transferring my main machine to it.

But then, I speak as someone who has PCs and laptops with Win 8.1, Win 7.1, Win XP and even Win 98SE installed, for various purposes...  I guess I'm not your typical user!

The Livestock 2 app is good for tracking what has sold, for how much and what day.

Is this app desktop, Android, iOS?

Android only.

Is there anyway to track these? I have some showing up but it is hard to tell what or when they sold.

If you're using Chrome (or Firefox, where it works but is no longer supported) you can install a script which adds all kinds of useful support to the "My Uploads" pages and allows at least some sort of means of seeing what was downloaded when onto the PP pages, albeit still not ideal.

Newbie Discussion / Re: 2005 vs 2014
« on: March 05, 2014, 05:57 »
Well, I don't go back quite that far, my first full year was 2007.

I can say that in 2007 I earned slightly less than 10% of what I earned in 2013, from about 20% of the number of images.

However, I wasn't Exclusive then - or at least, not the whole time, as I recall I think I went Exclusive towards the end of the year - nor did I submit to Alamy or do any footage (not that I make much with either), and I was still learning the ropes.

Looking at that, I seem to have done quite well really...  it just doesn't feel that way just now!

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Why opt out of PP when you're Exclusive
« on: March 01, 2014, 05:08 »
No it's not more money. That's the problem, In the land of smoke and mirrors and twisted facts, hypothetical predicted promises, it's more money. But only for IS.

My average commission per RPD on IS before TS in 2009, was $1.41 - I think you can see how 28 cents is not that much?  :D Partner program royalty for December 2009 was 25c per DL by the way.

2010 $1.58 vs 28c
2011 $1.34 vs 28c
2012 $1.03 vs 28c

...

What's an exclusives average RPD for a standard DL?

My RPD, as an Exclusive, has gone up by comparatively by leaps and bounds:

2010 $2.92 vs 34c
2011 $4.11 vs 42c
2012 $6.61 vs 44c
2013 $9.51 vs 52c

but my regular downloads have gone down in the same period, of course, by a factor of something like 2.6.

The result, however, is I've made a lot more in 2013 than I did in 2009, so it's worked OK for me.

iStock are raising prices to try and find the sweet spot - maximum DLs is not the same thing as maximum income.  Which makes sense, provided they don't overdo it and lose too many customers.  Time will tell...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Mirrorless Camera
« on: February 14, 2014, 06:57 »
I tend to agree - I used to have an E-30, and liked it a lot - still have some lenses for it, so I bought an OM-D E-M5 just to try it, using the adaptor for the lenses.

It's a neat bit of kit, and the quality seems good enough for stock, but it can't match my 5D Mk 2 and I still prefer to use the Canon whenever I can.  The only thing the Olympus has over the Canon is of course that it's so much smaller and lighter, so much easier to travel with, and not so intimidating when out in public - it looks much like a point and shoot.

But I am interested to see how the Sony A7 develops.  With some decent lenses it might be a winner.  I'm considering selling on the Olympus and buying one of them instead.

General - Stock Video / Re: dust spot on video
« on: February 08, 2014, 11:36 »
You don't have to "import video layers" - in fact, I'm not sure what you mean there - just drag and drop the .mov file onto Photoshop and it will open it as a single layer.

Then follow the guide as in the video I linked to earlier
(http://tv.adobe.com/watch/russell-brown-at-photoshop-world-2011-orlando/smart-object-video-in-photoshop/)

Note though it only works in PS CS 4 and above Extended versions (as far as I know).

General Stock Discussion / Re: January results
« on: February 01, 2014, 13:11 »
IS Exclusive; total income +22.6% compared to January 2013.

Includes PP and GI from December, and RM/Video from other outlets.  Doesn't allow for incorrect royalty rate being used for most of January, so will actually be a little more when that is corrected.

As KB says, sales numbers are somewhat down, but as long as the $$s are up, I'm rather more sanguine about that.  I'll not worry about it until it affects the income!

« on: January 28, 2014, 06:31 »
Yes. I have an extra big fat wad of cash in my account this morning and because of their opaque accounting system I have no idea if its from GI or refund for Jan royalty rate glitch. On the positive side, I'm glad to have it.

It'll be GI.

See here http://www.istockphoto.com/user_stats.php?Offset=0&DownloadsGraphFileType=

and check for the purple bar in December.  You'll have to dig a bit deeper to find out exactly what sold though.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Poor start to 2014
« on: January 22, 2014, 04:57 »
I seem to be broadly on a par with Jan 2013 myself - DLs a little down, but RPD is up (highest ever in fact) so it's balancing out so far, and that's at a lower royalty rate than I should be getting.

maybe it's due the fact there is no XS size on istock ? gone today to use my last credit on istock and the cheapest images is only for 2 credits

No.  The XS size was only removed in the last 24 hours, and I've sold a few which are included in my figures.

But we'll have to see how it pans out from now on...

In fact, when PP and GI figures come in (and assuming they add on the correction for the royalty rate, eventually) I would expect it to be better than last January.  But we shall see.

General Stock Discussion / Re: December 2013 earnings
« on: January 01, 2014, 19:46 »
iStock Photo Exclusive - royalties DOWN 22% compared to November 2013, because December is always poor, but UP 28% compared to December 2012, because that was exceptionally poor.

Total iStock earnings UP 5% over the year, including PP and GI; if I include RM and video sales on other sites, total income UP 9%.   That's OK, I haven't produced a great deal of new work this year.

I think I might try and do a bit more on those other sites (RM and video) in 2014...

General Stock Discussion / Re: Submitting video: Is it worth it?
« on: December 26, 2013, 06:32 »
Clearly everyone's experience is different...  I have more success with SS, though I do like being able to set my own prices on Pond5.  Both upload processes are easy, via ftp, no problems.

Don't know about cheques, but if you use PayPal Pond5 will pay out over $25, SS over $75.

In my experience, it would be a mistake not to submit to both.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Submitting video: Is it worth it?
« on: December 25, 2013, 14:51 »
Depends what you mean by "worth it" - I started doing simple video with my 5D II a couple of years ago, and submitting to a few agencies.

I don't have a large portfolio and it's mostly simple, static stuff, but I do enjoy trying it out and intend to keep going; it's fun.

As for demand, no, there's not a great deal of it, at least not for easy stuff;  I've made a grand total of about $900 or so all year, is all.

The only sites where I have had any sales are SS, Pond5, iStock and ClipCanvas.

The waiting times for approval are very short on SS and Pond5 (a day or two at most), somewhat more on iStock, and I don't know what's happening at ClipCanvas - they used to be quick, but my last few submissions have waited months until I emailed them asking what was happening, at which they were instantly reviewed and accepted.  They seem to be having difficulties, which is a shame because I quite liked them.

It does take extra effort, but there are no instant returns in this game;  you have the equipment, why not make use of it?

173
Well, I appreciate your sharing your experience Targoszstock, thank you!

And 16 video sales a month on iStock certainly seems significant to me (I've only ever had 10 in total!) though my portfolio is quite small and very simple.  What I take from this is that video exclusivity on iStock is only likely to work for those with high production value footage, for the simple stuff it's probably better to be independent.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Best noise reduction program
« on: December 11, 2013, 06:39 »
I use Neat Image when really necessary, but as Travelling-light says, it's best to try and avoid noise reduction if at all possible.  Seems to work well, but I've no experience with anything else.

When I do use it though, I use it very sparingly and on a separate layer, with a mask so only the bits needing it are visible, like in the sky or whatever.

Depends what software you have - if you've an Extended version of Photoshop CS5 or above, one technique is described here:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/russell-brown-at-photoshop-world-2011-orlando/smart-object-video-in-photoshop/

or, if you have After Effects, you could try this

http://magictimelapse.blogspot.co.uk/2009/08/remove-dust-spots-with-adobe-after.html

works quite well so long as the background is fairly uniform, or out of focus, but sometimes still shows through.
