I don't understand the obsession with Paypal fees.  The buyer should know that there are fees associated with a Paypal transaction, as there are with credit card transactions.  He should also know that he's paying those fees, one way or another.  Simply a business expense passed on to the customer.  No big deal.

ditto.  I feel you are making a bigger deal of this than it really is Poncke

« on: November 27, 2012, 16:30 »
lol! Yeah, I my low hanging fruit made me laugh! It was like in front of our hotel! Also I had one pic that sold that I took in front of our hotel- it was their flowerbed. Than I want to a garden (you had to pay big bucks to get in and a 2 hour drive) and nothing got accepted or sold...

Yeah, that just goes to prove that what sells and is able to make money in micro is the completely generic.  Stuff that is very specific should be sold as RM so that when you finally DO get a sale it is paid accordingly.

If you are going to try and get some tourism shots on the micros it has to be the super cliche tourist attractions.  I have a couple shots from prauge and malta that do OK but they are shot of the thing people think of when thinking about those countries.... and like mad said.. I've had a bit of luck with those shots.

Adobe Stock / Two changes for Fotolia Submitters
« on: November 27, 2012, 11:56 »
Fotolia just sent out an email with a couple changes.  Most people probably got it but it seems lots of emails get eaten up by the spam bots so here it is if you've missed it

Quote
Fotolia is offering you more ways to manage your portfolio.

In the next few days, you'll see two important changes.

First, you will have the option to exclude video files from subscriptions.

Second, the pricing of Extended license files is changing. Extended license files will now have a minimum price of 20 credits, and cannot be priced lower than the largest Standard license price offering.

For example, If the file price for a Standard XXL license is set at 24 credits, the price for an Extended license must be 24 credits or more.

We hope that you take advantage of these features as you continue to sell images on Fotolia.

Best regards,
Team Fotolia

Fortunately it doesn't look like anything negative which often seems to be the case as of late.  Essentially forced higher extended pricing and the option to remove video from subscription licenses.  Two welcomed things.

I'll lock this topic.  I think the discussion can be combined into one.

Here's the other thread

I haven't bothered to install the latest update - I've heard it is quite a bit better though.  I can post an update if I install it and whether I choose to keep it or keep my old 'custom search'.
I hired a custom coder to modify the search quite a bit and have been pretty happy with the results

1507
Yes. I've switched to doing that with my DSLR too and it's a much better system.

Ok.  I'll give it a try with that one.  I just started doing that a month or so ago as well with the dslr and agree, it is a better solution.

So maybe my fear is for nothing. I just don't want to tick off the editor and pound the stuffing out of me...

Thanks.

Tom

I think your biggest risk is just that the same reviewer will get all the images and has little to do whether they are re-edited or not.  If you want multiple opinions, I'd upload them at different times.

1509
My only tip is to set up back button focussing with it, make it much more practical.

You mean instead of having the shutter button set as focus, to use one of the buttons on the back for focus?

1510
I've got one and have had shots accepted with it. Lens flares if you point it into light sources, but otherwise pretty good quality. Too slow for stock work I found, but a good back up camera for when a DSLR is too big. Hybrid viewfinder is a good development, I'd like to see that in bigger, better cameras.

Thanks for the thoughts.  I probably won't use it much (if at all) for stock so the limitations in that regards isn't a big deal.  I have gotten a few good grab shots over the years that have paid off well but generally I find it is a waste of time to try and get stock from daily life. it's nice to have the opportunity however

General Stock Discussion / Re: Resubmit Advice Wanted
« on: November 25, 2012, 16:10 »
I don't think it matters really.  I often gather up a bunch of rejects and resubmit them all at once.  I have a special folder for 'resubmit to Shutterstock'  When I don't have anything else to upload, I'll rework the images that were rejected and I think are worthwhile then resubmit them to Shutterstock in a batch of 30 or so with a note saying they are re-edited and uploaded for the second time.

Folders a lot of work... no way.

spreadsheets are a lot of work.

Take this example of preparing 500 images.

Spreadsheet
1. type in 500 image names into spreadsheet (an hour or two??)
2. upload random set of 50 images (to reduce similar rejections) and find all those images in the 500 and put a little Upload mark on them
3. wait for review and mark those images rejected or accepted
4. pick next set of 50 random images... but make sure to double check the spreadsheet to make sure they aren't uploaded already (**sigh**)

Folders
1. copy and past 500 image shortcuts into 6 different folders (a minute or two)
2. select 50 images... drag them to ftp (wait for upload) then press delete key
3. .. which images still need uploading?  The images left in the folders.. no need for laboursome marks and checks in a eye crossing spreadsheet.
4. repeat

I just bought this camera and am waiting for it in the mail.  I bought it for a more convenient party / family / walk around / holiday camera when I don't want to lug around an SLR and I want something that is better quality than a smarphone (iPhone in my case).  I got it because it has a large sensor and uses a lot of manual control to change things like aperture and shutter speed.  I'm happy to zoom with my feet with a camera like in in exchange for a quality lens.  I'm also a sucker for retro styled stuff.  I'm still waiting for it in the mail but will share more thoughts when it comes.

Is anyone else using it?  Do you like it / hate it?

... I just merged the two threads on this camera.

I have never heard of there being a time frame (for submitter referrals) on Shutterstock but there is for buyers (although i can't find how long it is on their site right now)

It's been off and on all week for me.  I wrote to support and they said, use the online uploader while they are doing some upgrades.
I think I'll just wait it out.

Adobe Stock / Re: Shocking Fotolia Earnings Drop
« on: November 21, 2012, 15:17 »
Wow, that really puts things into perspective in a graph like that.  My earnings have been pretty steady lately but so have my uploads.  I have noticed however that new files are selling a lot better than old files.  It used to be that the same 10 files sold over and over again and new files hardly got looked at.  They have certainly changed things a bit in the last 12 months.

It would be very interesting to see 20 peoples earnings vs port size graphs and see if we can see an obvious trend.

Fotolia is crazy. They rejected everything of mine that got into istock. And here I was thinking istock was tough!

Simply put, they have different requirements, or are picky about different things.  A great stock image will be accepted everywhere, a borderline image will have a tough time on some sites.  Which site it struggles to get accepted depends on what is wrong with it.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Workflow Advice
« on: November 21, 2012, 06:15 »
I don't bother keeping track which images get accepted by which site.  In the end, it doesn't make a difference.  If an image is rejected on one site and accepted on another and I think it is an image that's going to be a big seller I'll see if I can fix the problem, otherwise I'll just continue on with the next image.

I often create folders of 'batches' of images.   Once I have a new batch ready (I use batches of 50), I copy those images into an 'upload' folder for each site (so I have 10 copies of the same image on my hard drive - one in each folder for each site).  Then after I upload the image, I delete it from the corresponding folder.

Isn't that going to exponentially chock up your HD space though? There has to be another way?

JPG's don't eat up that much room and since the files get uploaded relatively soon it doesn't take up that much space.  But yes, I do save space by actually just copying shortcuts to the files, then delete the shortcuts when the file is uploaded.  I left out that step for simplicity when explaining.
