I love the vocabulary, woohoo, awsome dude, etc. Man I am getting old.

I only see responses from exclusives. I still see a slow demise of iStock based on this progression of only rewarding exclusives. I know, I know Sean you don't agree.

Thanks to everyone for reporting that. We believe that we have found the cause of some new images failing to show up properly in searches ordered by newest first, and expect that everything will be back to normal sometime this afternoon. We'll be keeping an eye on it. Thanks again for reporting it, and thanks for your patience.

In general this week very slow for me. A little disappointing since October has otherwise exceeded expectations for me. It will be a BME, but with the little slowdown, will not reach the sales figure I had hoped based on the projection from the first 3 weeks.
I was wondering what happened. I uploaded a bunch of new images and have seen few DLs.

I'm not ready to celebrate or anything but are others experiencing a slight increase in sales activity?

I really like keywording system on Alamy,

Holy Cow WhiteChild, no offense, but did you bump your head on a cupboard door on your way to your collection of thesaurases? Man oh man, Alamy's keywording is fine in theory but in practice it is sheer lunacy. Three levels of keywords with x-number of letters allowed in each category is too much. Okay two levels maybe, but three?

Peter

I never told someone here that he "bump a head on a cupboard door on hes way to a collection of thesaurases". Yes, this is a free forum, but we all should have minimum respect to each other

My apologies, of course. I try a little tongue in cheek humour on these forums and I always fall flat on my face. In real life I actually make people laugh but the written word is so much different than the spoken word. Very complex, really.

Of those of you who own a G10 do you have any problems getting images accepted? I want to buy my daughter a camera and would like to know if I could use it the odd time.

You were making over $10,000 a month on these sites? That's good spare change.

There was no such thing as a site, at least not an internet site back then.

My concerns come from consolidation for sure but what really bothers me is the faceless ownership. Neither Getty or iStock are the same companies any more. Not even close really. I started off many years ago with SuperStock. At the time they were a real powerhouse, I used to get monthly 5 figure royalty reports from them, but slowly through one bad decision after the other they managed to acquire bankruptcy protection this week.  What an achievement. I hear a lot of boohoo stories but really its just bad decision making.

At best StockXpert will be viewed as an asset and and worst it will be viewed as an annoyance. With intelligent marketing the majority of the StockXpert costumer base can be shifted to iS. The rest can be simply written off.

I hear on this clip "we love our photographers...they are our biggest strength...creating great relationships" I see a royalty percentage going from 45% to 40%. Frankly I see huge mistakes made over  the years that were as obvious as noses on faces that photographers are asked to pay for now.

I used Squarspace for my site http://zanyzeus.ca  Fairly easy and painless for a good basic site. But there are features I wish it had.

There was 15% layoff of Corbis employees. Maybe most of the SV staff are out shooting images.

My graph looks a lot like the original poster. I too can't get very excited about uploading to iS anymore. Given the recent setback at FT with rankings and this I am rethinking my whole participation in the micros.

This is a useless post and I apologize, but it's always times like this that makes me want to take something expensive and throw it out a window. Of course the only loser is myself, however I can't help but think I'd feel better.

Hi Zues,

I beleive before the change they considered three subs equal to a classic sale so there has been a change there as well. Now you need 25% more subs to equal a " classic sale ".

AVAVA

Sorry I'm confused here, what is a classic sale and what is its relevance? Is that what is used to give a ranking?

Another point, sorry if has been mentioned, is they have basically lowered commissions paid on regular sales. It used to be Gold was achieved at 5,000 now it's 10,000 so that is 5,000 sales at 35% instead of 37% by reaching gold earlier. I am averaging a bit over a buck for standard downloads. So that means a loss of $100 while waiting to reach Gold, $300 loss for waiting to reach Emerald from Gold and so on and so on. Never mind the 50,000 to get to where you can elevate prices. This loss is also seen on subs, since they go up incrementally a penny. This may have something to do with exclusives but really its just a good old fashioned lowering of payment percentages. Alamy just did, Corbis will do it on next contract flip, blah, blah, blah. Another squeeze of the tender areas.

Have you noticed this tidbit "four files sold from subscription are equivalent to one old file from classical system." I'm pretty sure the "classical" (love that euphemism) system gave you one sale point for each sub DL. So for those of you who get lots of subs. Are you noticing your ticker going up even slower. Pretty easy to tell, just add sub plus paids should equal total files in the sold stats.

This development solidifies in my mind the need to remain completely nimble. Is there really a downside to keeping the ranking at its old levels? Does Fotolia work on an image exclusive basis or does it follow the iStock, we own your soul method?

PDN kind of misunderstood my point with the stereotypes, and my numbers and think I am Dutch... (Im a purebread Dane (Danish), not Dutch or Russian)...Hmmm

Yuri,

I was wondering when the Dutch thing would come up. You know, one of those D countries. Was that Deutschland? I have a friend who never reads PDN saying they never get anything right. Maybe he's right.

Very interesting article.  I have to admit to feeling somewhat threatened by the high volume producers.  As someone who has been doing this full-time for a couple of years, I don't know how long I will be able to compete.

On the up side, my production costs are extremely low, so much of what I earn is profit.  While I am quite willing to improve my equipment and skills to keep my image quality rising, I am not interested in expanding to a paid staff.

Lisa, I often feel the same way and have for many years now. I watch, and admire the production companies as they produce huge volumes of material and wonder why I don't do the same thing. However I don't do all that badly in the end. Like you, my expenses are very low and I'm sure these same companies would salivate all over my expense sheets. I leave the business sitting when I feel like it and go off and enjoy life for a while. This would be difficult to do when you have to keep several bodies busy. I think it suits some personalities very well, just not me, not at this time anyways.

They've picked up over past couple of months at 123. I wish all the sites had consistently good weeks. I always think "all right, things are finally happening" only to find that they un-happen the following week.

To all the Istock exclusives out here:
defending the obvious wrong, doesn't make it right.
At Istock, right now, reviewing times are almost 3 weeks.
That's wrong.

That's not wrong, and not rigth. It is the way it is in this moment. Uploading is free, and to upload or not is a free decision too.

Really the problem is expectations are ingrained. I don't think that 3 weeks is that long, however if it was one week or less for a long time I have to ask why its changed to 3 weeks. And if its 3 weeks, why not 6 weeks? Nothing wrong with that. There's a lot of defenders out there and that's probably good. However even the mighty slip. I think a little bit of complaining is good thing especially when its backed with a reasonable argument.

I can remember looking through those catalogs in complete awe of the imagery. Always a motivator. Times are a bit different now aren't they.

Best,
