Computer Hardware / Re: Your Dream Screen

Been with an Apple 30 for a couple of years now, like everything they are about a grand cheaper now. Would like to get a second one now the LR supports two monitors.
No complaints about them at all.

I don't know what they are making now, but a couple of years ago I was approached about reviewing for a well known site and at that time they were paying .35 per image reviewed.

Seems like a pretty tough way to get a paycheck IMHO.  I decided to stick with shooting and uploading, thanks all the same ;)

Certainly if you were paid that for reviewing on StockXpert you'd be making a decent living.

I must say I feel a bit stupid, I TOTALLY forgot all about my tools. I feel so much better knowing I can start tomorrows shooting by just opening my tool box and laying out all those really cool screwdrivers I own on my new (almost) white (almost) underwear.

If the micros want to see less noise they should just stipulate the camera types they are willing to accept images from. And yes, blurs are legitimate photo technique as are slants.

I think the SAA would like to kidnap micro shooters and send them to deprogrammers analogous to cult deprogrammers.

Not sure what is happening at Alamy right now but I hear of very poor sales for last month from lots of people, me included.

Richard

If the Image is on other sites as RM, should not the photographer add restrictions on the other sites, for the same image and useage?

David

As long as the images are not sold with distinct usage restrictions it does not matter. That is why Alamy has a L and and RM. Most agencies want RM images exclusively for this reason, however Alamy is not one of them.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Seasonal swings
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:54 »

I haven't monitored these things myself, but it looks like it might be a good idea. I don't have the same scale as top microstockers, but the learning experience would undoubtedly be valuable. From what I know of a few of the top contributors (Yuri, Andres, Ron) they're all intensely analytical and strategic about these sorts of details. It can't hurt to follow their examples and create some good habits early on.

Ultimately we are all in competition with each other so I don't really get the point of threads like this, and also doubt whether the guys above would be freely sharing their strategies.

I rue the day I shared some of my strategies with someone and was utterly ripped off.

I'm sure there are a lot of well kept secrets out there. I doubt I would let out everything I know, however there are those who actually believe in themselves enough to be able to discuss topics like this out in the open. It's clear not everyone has the same ideas and I doubted they would. Why talk about anything at all? Or perhaps the best thing to do is mislead everyone at anytime I can, yes that's right I think I'll become a Republican.

It needs to show as cleared in the account balance, then it will be paid at the end of the month and only if cleared balance is over $250. Some sales can take a long time to clear.

Given that there are seasonal swings in sales volumes, do many of you hold back submissions to coincide with the highs in sales?

Jack,

I guess there are oodles of photographers who approach business like this but it just doesn't pay the bills. ROI has to include a lot more than what is spent on gear AND in the end there needs to be profit so you can buy the kids shoes and feed yourself.

Chumley,

Your a lean, mean, shooting machine. I've worked with agency produced briefs (sworn to secrecy on these, sorry) and found the best I could get was around 125 good images in 6 to 8 hours so getting 175-200 in 5 is very humbling for me. Extreme co-ordination.

Not true. IS is the most consistent in reviewing.

Yes they are certainly the most  consistently inconsistent.

your are right. this obvious truth has escaped me. I would like to improve on
you excellent phrasing. they are the most consistently inconsistent responding to falsehood.

I have this theory and am curious what others think. Has microstock been around long enough now that most designers private collection of images has gotten large enough that they don't need to sign up for subscriptions or do individual downloads very often?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: declining downloads
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:04 »
August 2007, my first full month on iStock, I had 125 sales with a port of 60 photos.  July 2008, I had 62 sales with a port of over 250 photos.  I'm nearly up to 300 photos online, and sales are even slower this month than they started off at last month.

Keep at 'er. Should be able to half your income again if you can double the portfolio again.

I just don't think that many of the evaluators actually know what they are looking at.

I'm fairly new but it's SS, DT, iS and FT. I do find iS a bit frustrating. The only images that seem to sell are from my first couple weeks of uploads.

I am confused...  Why does it HURT to upload to the new guys?  Do you get a rash or do your testicles shrink or something?

I find it more of increase in blood pressure and a desire to hurt something.

Back in the day the minimum number of images needed to start with a (macro) stock agency was 2000 with 100 added each month (generally shot on medium format film).  About 20,000 was consider to be around the point where you could retire.  Not sure how this translates today.

There are too many variables to give an accurate figure. Some of Getty's highest earners have had portolios of just a couple hundred images. While others produce for mass market images and also make a great living.
