I am making about $70 a month now with BigStock. ...

3.1/2 cents/image/month ... yikes, that's a low ROI.
Thanks for the info, sharpshot!

I received a Wacom Graphire tablet as a present. I wanted an Intuos, but my gf asked asked a few designers at work about tablets. They all use the cheaper Graphire tablet, so that's what I got.

Using a tablet is quite different than using a mouse, and I haven't yet made the shift to using it. The most annoying thing about it is the "jumpiness" of the mouse.

What I'd eventually like to get is their Cintiq 21" LCD monitor/tablet - using a pen directly on the screen would be so effortless!

Yes, spacing things out does make sense. That's about the only way to get similar images accepted, too.

One thing I was thinking about is how similar images may affect exposure. If you upload 3 similar images and they get, say, 30, 20 and 14 DLs over a short period, you may inadvertently miss the what's hot/best seller list if the cutoff is 40.

Why should you worry about the images taking up space, IS is paying for it not you. I've had images that have taken 9 months before they sold if I'd deactivated them then I never would have made the sale.
I'm not at all worried about images taking up space - what I'm concerned about is professional image/reputation. The only thing that people know of me online is through the images I make available. If some of them are commercially worthless (i.e. potential buyers see them as 'crap'), I don't see how this can positively influence their opinion of me.

Perhaps what I'm thinking is that my professional reputation is worth more than (a handful of images which may at best earn) $20.

if you submit large batches with similar shots you are competing with yourself, they will reject some of them.
...

Just curious: How is it possible to compete with yourself? Are you suggesting that by uploading similar images you will have fewer overall sales?

A disappointing month with nominal sales increases on all sites, resulting in a 7% increase in total sales. On the positive side, sales at SS hit a low at Easter and increased dramatically to prevent what should have been a decline in revenue. This trend, together with the 20% commission increase, makes me guardedly optimistic about the upcoming month. I will begin contributing to StockXpert in May, and will abandon FT if sales are significant.

A bit of a slow day on SS for me, but I've had 6 thirty-centers so far. A pleasant surprise that they're coming a day early - maybe I'll get an extra buck out of it.

I wholeheartedly recommend this spreadsheet to track and predict your IS earnings - it's been very accurate for me thus far.

Maybe it's just the inexperienced me, but if an image hasn't sold once in one year I can only conclude that the commercial value of that image is zero. Waiting two years to reach this may be overly optimistic and conservative.

I have a eight images uploaded in December that haven't yet sold - I've already audited their keywords & categories and will deactivate them (to use IS terminology) if they don't sell by the end of May. I'd rather have a portfolio of active (and therefore "interesting") images than one which just takes up space.

... From my experience with one solitary photo, it looks like it's worth the extra effort required.

I'll second that.

My main concerns with IS are that their reviewers can be inconsistent and overly concerned with technical perfection. Apart from that they're great - I wish I could upload to them at a faster rate.

Well done, hatman12!

The sales will start coming in increasingly quicker, and you'll be shooting for gold level before you know it.

I currently use Excel to hold data and make charts. I'll be switching to Access soon, though - spreadsheets are not so good for holding related bits of information. I need to have things ready once I have enough data - perhaps in another three months. I'll also have to brush up on my statistics so that I can know how relevent/valid my findings are.

I intend to examine the effect that various factors (e.g. framing, submission day, composition, subject, ...) have on my sales - I've read plenty of anecdotal/common sense/pet theory type of stuff, but don't want to base business decisions on anything so ethereal.

Daily figures.

I usually check my numbers twice a day. I visit them in the morning while I'm uploading - by doubling my overnight sales I can more-or-less tell how the day is going to proceed (I live in a GMT-8 zone). I update my spreadsheets nightly.

Hey, hatman12, I'm wondering how long I'll have to wait until I can begin uploading. How long did it take you to get approved?

I use 7 day moving averages together with 5th degree polynomials to keep track of things - I haven't been at this long enough to perform any meaningful statistical trend analyses, so I use my data to mostly track my progress for the time being. Here's my summary chart:

As far as overkill is concerned, I don't think it is. I'm in this full time, and I'm not going to depend on chance or luck to be successful. I think it is completely necessary to be as informed as possible about the state of my income.

Or at least as informed as my puny brain will allow.

The above formula can be simplified to (b/a -1)*100.

With a little practise, you'll be able to "guesstimate" % change by simply dividing b by a.

Nice timing on my part: I've just reapplied to be a contributor at StockXpert.

That settles it: I'm reapplying to StockXpert.

StockXpert was the only site that rejected my initial application, which soured me quite a bit. Rejection ain't easy to take, especially when you have a history of success.

I'll hopefully get in this time. If all goes well, I'll have a long and rewarding relationship with these guys.

Way to go!

StockXpert has been exploding for me this past month. Over a 700% increase in sales this month. They are #2 behind Shutterstock this month for me. (Not on Istock)

Kngkyle: I am strongly considering ditching FT in favor of StockXpert. I am curious about your 700% explosion - how many images does your portfolio contain, and how many DLs have you had? 700% is very impressive, but may be a bit misleading if you have, say 300 images with 2 sales last month and 14 this month.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Annoying use of Keywords!!
« on: April 26, 2007, 08:59 »
Further to my original reply, I use my keywords in the description of the image, usually in the form of [subject] with/in [background, [composition]Here's a recent example:

title:
desc:
key1:
key2:
key3:
key4:
key5:
airplane
propeller airplane flying in stormy sky, silhouette, closeup, b/w, square frame
airplane,propeller,executive,business,private,aeroplane,airplane,flying,plane,flight
thunderhead,thunderstorm,thunderclouds,stormclouds,storm,clouds,cloudy,weather,sky
menacing,turbulent,dramatic,violent
monochrome,black,white,blue,bw,closeup,close-up,detail,silhouette,square
ominous,adversity,risk,challenge,danger,dangerous,risky,perilous,jeopardy,daring,defiance,bravery,hazardous,determination

With regard to using only 10 keywords - I don't think that is enough to adequately market an image. The above example uses 47 keywords, all of which are related to the image. Sure, I could weed some out, but I want to get the most out of every tool I have in order to maximize my exposure.

... and yeah, I'm the guy who specializes in aircraft.
