Word-Thanks so much for sharing your portfolios and telling me what has sold there.  I think I have a gameplan now. I really enjoyed looking at your travel photos especially.
I love lighthouses and I have a couple more on my bucket list after looking at your photos!

Light-I think I've decided on sending one or two best-of-the-bunch from every batch to just Alamy.  I'm going to try that for about a year and see how it works out.

CS-I've got to weed out some micros.  This uploading 10-20 every night to 8 different micros has got to stop.  It's starting to resemble a certain 4-letter word I said I was going to avoid at all costs when I retired.  ;)

Thanks Light, CS, Word.  You guys are great!

Vann, you better have a HUGE portfolio to pay for travel gas in 15 years.  It's our biggest expense.  And the way it's going up, it'll be at least $10 bucks a gallon by then! :o

Thanks, Light!
I had already figured out from some MSG posts about Alamy that "micro" is a 4-letter word over there.  :D
Uncommon travel photos might be my best bet.  You wouldn't believe some of the places we park our "house" and boondock.

So you have 1200 on the micros and Alamy.  Do you think that having those files on the micros hurts your Alamy sales of them at all?
Or is it generally two different groups of buyers maybe?  I'm thinking there is no way I'd pay $50 for a photo at Alamy when I could get the exact same thing on SS for $10.  But then again, I'm a tightwad.

Thanks so much for the help.  It's tough to see what sells there just from their website.

Really, more of a part-time thing, but it is my only "job".  My husband and I are retired and we travel the country with a 27ft RV.  We don't depend on micro to pay any bills, but it sure is nice having that money magically appear in my personal paypal online shopping account every month.  Especially for something I'd be doing anyway (photographing America).

General Stock Discussion / Alamy. I feel special. Now what?

I just got accepted (2nd try...I think I resaved one to jpg one too may times on the 1st batch).

For those of you that sell photos on Alamy and microstock:
Do you upload the same photos to all of them?  Do you sell more on Alamy if you "reserve" a few of your best files for them?
Is the editorial stuff worth fooling with?  How about travel photography?
I must admit, I'm liking their pricing structure and commission.
I'd much rather sell a photo once a month for 30 dollars....um, I mean pounds, than sell it 50 times for 38 cents. I don't want something that would sell on the micros to sit there gathering dust on the Alamy shelf either.
Thanks for any insight! (Sue, are you there?)
Sorry for all the questions.  I see a "best of" search button, but not sure if that translates to "selling like hotcakes"?

Read everything Lisa, Sean, Sue, etc tell you 3x and then copy and paste it on your monitor screen. They have BTDT and will tell you exactly how it is.  I'd much rather get their feedback here than spend umpteen hours shooting and uploading useless stuff only to get it rejected.

Tick, have you read some of that stuff they post on the IS forum???  Our sales are going down like the Titanic (We Luv IS!). They screwed us over with that Getty deal (We luv IS anyway!).  Sean got the boot (Oh, they'd never do that to US....We Luv IS!)
Yup, pet rats.
Sorry, kinda off-topic.

I don't know if you consider this relevant to your situation, but in the last 2 months IS has dropped to last place on my earnings list.
I have been with them as an indie since 2004.  Admittedly, during my 5 years as a wedding photog I didn't upload much and my portfolio there was/is micro-scopic (ha).
Their uploading process takes way too long and the returns don't justify the hassle.
If I was just starting out I would put my efforts into  SS, FT, and DT.  IS is indeed a sinking ship and I would be getting as many files on the other 3 as quickly as possible before their horde of pet rats figure that out and start deserting them en masse.
Tick, that is interesting about Yuri.  I gave you a + to make up for one of those -.

If my sales are any indication of the general market, then it seems that SS has taken the buyers away from IS.  My sales at SS are up 300% in Feb 2013 vs Feb 2012.  In contrast, my sales are down 90% at IS from Feb 2012 to Feb 2013. And it continues to get worse, I have had ONE ten cent sale on IS in the past 5 weeks.
Both portfolios have doubled in size since last February. I am at the point right now of trying to figure out if it is still worth my time to upload anything new at IS.  I am over halfway to a payout and I need new FX lenses for my D800!

185
February's non-sub(single and on demand) income was 64% of total, January's non-sub was 60%.  I don't know about everyone else's experience, but it seems that the more new files I upload, the more non-sub downloads I get.

I sent them a message from the "delete your account" page.  My account was totally gone within 14 hours without even a thank-you-very-much for that free 50 cents they kept.   :o

Just a what-if question.
How many of us would be tempted and what kind of terms would they have to offer?
They may be missing a golden opportunity right now.
If the earnings ratings are any indication, they could possibly put a few more nails
in the competition's coffins.

That was my first sale since Feb 3, Vann.  At this rate, I'm really looking forward to my projected payout in June 2018.  Only $40 to go, WooHoo!

Thanks, that explains it. Sue, your reply leads me to another question I have been pondering of late.
Does size matter?  I'm considering an upgrade on my camera to a D800 (36MP).  Do those huge files actually sell better.  What about acceptance rate?
I would think it wouldn't matter at IS as the bigger sizes are far more expensive.  But at SS, where all sizes cost the same?

Anybody ever have one that low?  It shows on my stat page as a blue file purchase, not partner program.  The XS is $2.00 and my huge cut of that is 15%. It has 75 downloads, so I don't think it would be in any kind of "bargain bin".  Anybody know what this could be? Thanks for any insight!
