Redesigning won't help them from decline.
Greed will kill their project and then all industry itself.
Firstly, they must solve content spammers problem, because it looks like that 100 millions of images out of 195 millions are similars and pure garbage.
Rules must be strict - immediate ban, with only ONE warning.
As for the second, to simplify things they must write script, which will delete all images, that are not downloaded for say 2 years or so.
This is logical solution.
But my life experience shows, that main heads of the projects in 99% cases are pretty much dumb golden boys (or big papa's girls) and it is almost useless to wait for adequate solutions from such "personalities".

R2D2, looks like that this statement is pretty close to reality. Not so long ago i've seen some agencies, that are proud of 0.25$ royalties. And positioning such earnings as advancement. Situation is demanding completely new marketplace that will over-top SS.

Crap or not, but they are just as good (or bad) as 99% of the drones out there, from which footage and images get accepted and sold in great numbers everywhere. 
yeap, if newest smartphones don't have appropriate sensors (in terms of physical size), then drones don't have them definitely.

When these things happenning I think that it is really the end…
I never use my mobile phone to take pictures, but last week I have decided to make a little experiment.
So I took three picture with an old Moto G2 with a very bad 8 Mpixels camera, and after a little post production I have uploaded them on Shutterstock, just to see what will happen.
Well, all three have been accepted.
I am speechless!
I attach some crop @100% of the images.
Really, today they accept even this $hit (noise, artifact, blurred/out of focus, etc.)?
I submit *heavy* processed images from Nokia PureView 808 shrinked to 3000 width. Only daylight images with good illumination could reach acceptable quality. I have hacked firmware which gives me not 38MP, but 41.5 output. The second phone that can provide similar quality is Panasonic CM-1. All other phones including newest iPhones and googlophones are pure crap and could not be submitted. And you know why they accept low-quality images, because of their greed. It is transparent.

Absolutely precise answer! After 2 years of being there i've earned ~110$ [250$ in total but - 140$ for awesome subscription]. Almost 8000 images and ~2.5 million of views. Pretty useless in terms of money earning.

I think that BigStock was one of the agencies that followed the model that each actual print sale would generate one regular license (versus buying an EL to offer a number of prints for sale). This idea first surfaced about a decade ago (I think with Fotolia initially). Lots of contributors argued. We lost.
I wrote to them about infringement, we'll see their opinion regarding the subject. I don't have any hopes, wrote to them just for fun.

I am talking about concrete device mentioned in the header.
You don't have full control over it. Landlord of it is company - not you.
Choose device that can be fully rooted and doesn't have beetle markers in it.
