Newbie Discussion / Re: Best noise reduction program
« on: December 11, 2013, 06:39 »
I use Neat Image when really necessary, but as Travelling-light says, it's best to try and avoid noise reduction if at all possible.  Seems to work well, but I've no experience with anything else.

When I do use it though, I use it very sparingly and on a separate layer, with a mask so only the bits needing it are visible, like in the sky or whatever.

Depends what software you have - if you've an Extended version of Photoshop CS5 or above, one technique is described here:

http://tv.adobe.com/watch/russell-brown-at-photoshop-world-2011-orlando/smart-object-video-in-photoshop/

or, if you have After Effects, you could try this

http://magictimelapse.blogspot.co.uk/2009/08/remove-dust-spots-with-adobe-after.html

works quite well so long as the background is fairly uniform, or out of focus, but sometimes still shows through.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Video Commissions at Istock
« on: November 13, 2013, 11:59 »
I've only a few videos on iStock, and all very simple, with only a few sales - but my lowest commission has been $1.70 (for a small web size) and my highest $20.90 for (HD 1080);  the average has been about $10.50.

They were reasonably successful for me at first, but for the last few months I've sold hardly anything there so now I concentrate more on SS, P5 and CC.  I do still upload to them though,  albeit rather as an afterthought.

DLs:
  • SS
  • iStock
  • P5/CC equal

$$s:
  • SS
  • P5
  • CC
  • iStock

Only a small portfolio (just over 100 at the most) though.  No sales on Revostock or anywhere else, though as SS/P5/CC/iS have been more successful, I have concentrated on them and do have the larger collections there.

I'm wondering, do you have to apply for video submission at SS like you do with stills? Or is is open if you are an approved contributor of stills?

It's open;  just upload videos and they will be inspected.  You don't even have to be an approved stills contributor, I'm not.

Computer Hardware / Re: Looking for a new backup system (raid1?)
« on: November 01, 2013, 05:25 »
I'm been in the IT industry for decades, and I would never get a RAID system for personal use for the simple reason that if the controller board fails then you will probably lose everything on the drives.  RAID is useless without a controller board and finding one that exactly matches the system that you have is almost impossible.  While having a controller board fail is not too likely, I still wouldn't want to take the risk.

RAID systems are also usually more expensive.

I would much rather just buy two drives and synchronize them with cheap software (such as SyncBack, etc).  Basically, everything that you save on one drive will then get copied to another drive.  If you lose one drive, you just buy another one and copy the files from the other drive and start the synchronization process all over again.

Not so at all.  With RAID 1, the drives are mirrored, and if the RAID controller fails you can always just mount one of the drives in another PC or external caddy and it will read it just fine.

At least, that's my experience.  Perhaps other RAID controllers operate differently, but that's always worked for me.  Besides, I've never yet had a controller card fail;  the disk is the most vulnerable item.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Resubmit through Deep Meta
« on: October 30, 2013, 08:36 »
No, you can't do it.  DeepMeta uses an API supplied by iStock, and the resubmit option isn't included in that, AFAIK, even if they allowed you the option.

The only way to resubmit a rejected file - which, BTW, is not something you are supposed to do anyway - would be to re-input it to DeepMeta, copy details from the rejected file and resubmit as a new file.

Whether or not iStock would find that acceptable, given the new relaxed inspection regime, is not clear - I haven't seen anything saying that they would, so you could be taking a bit of a liberty there.  I'm certainly not going to try it.

People who were forced to have their images on TS, and the independents who have no choice, were unhappy that they didn't have the ability to Opt. out and their images were producing roughly $1.20 less per download.

On the other hand, Exclusives who now have their collections back in the higher paying area are unhappy because they can't make 28 cents a download selling subs. They feel left out of potential income.

The inevitable conclusion is this, no matter what IS does, someone will be unhappy!  :)

Actually, Exclusives made a minimum of 38 cents a download in the PP, or more depending on their royalty level - but your conclusion is still valid!

Selling Stock Direct / Re: Self-Hosted at 14.6 - top 5
« on: October 28, 2013, 05:32 »
It depends what people report. I only sell RM at Alamy.
However, if I post my Alamy stats, it punts me into iS indie, so now I've stopped posting Alamy figures.
... I added to the September stats and that included Alamy RM. Where are you seeing that it is classing us as independent if we do that ?
Someone asked about it a few months back and Leaf confirmed that the system would do that.

Leaf, is that still the case?

When I report stats in the poll, I also add Alamy RM, and video sales on SS, Pond5 and ClipCanvas (not that I get many, but it does happen...) so presumably I'd get counted as an Indie too, some of the time anyway.

Would it be possible to change this so we can register ourselves as iStock Exclusives somehow in the poll?

Back to topic though - I too think it would be useful if you could separate out Symbiostock and "other self-hosted".

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Payoneer
« on: October 23, 2013, 03:44 »
But I think they only allow Payoneer for people who are inside the US and they don't allow you to link to an existing Payoneer account, they insist you open one with them.

AFAIK yes, you do have to get the card via iStock, but you can get it wherever you are - however, in some countries it may not be possible to do bank transfers from it, so it becomes like a preloaded cash card.  You can also use it to get cash from ATMs but the fees are a bit prohibitive, unless it's your only option.

You won't be able to apply for it though until you have the $100 minimum payout, and it will take 2-4 weeks to arrive.

There used to be some Payoneer reps on this forum, see here for a previous thread, or do a search.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Editorial Issues
« on: October 22, 2013, 08:03 »
I may be wrong here as I only submit footage to ShutterStock, not photos, but my understanding was that you didn't need "credentials", as such - you just need to provide an editorial caption in the correct format, which is, for ShutterStock, a little restrictive.  The event in question also needs to be newsworthy in some way and the caption needs to explain that, all in 200 characters...

But it could be that for events such as those you mention they would also require a release because photography at such places may be restricted, I don't know.  Perhaps someone else here could help?

Have you followed the requirements for editorial captions on SS as detailed here Shutterbuzz: creating the perfect editorial caption

http://www.michaeljayfoto.com/talking-numbers/detailed-microstock-report-for-september-and-the-third-quarter-of-2013/

almost reaching the income level before leaving iStock exclusivity (Jan 2013)

That's good for him, I hope next year is better.  For this year he still earned less than last year as an exclusive and he had to upload and deal with multiple sites.  Those numbers don't look very encouraging if you are considering dropping exclusivity.

It's not discouraging either.  As an Exclusive myself, I've earned less than I did last year too, with only four months of the nine showing an increase compared to 2012.

I'm sure anyone considering dropping Exclusivity would anticipate having reduced income for at least 6 - 12 months;  I find it quite encouraging that it seems to be possible to get back to a similar level within only a year, though I'm not planning to jump ship just yet...

iStockPhoto.com / Re: What Is Midstock?
« on: October 10, 2013, 10:21 »
The problem with the $25 number is that means there would have taken 8,400,000 downloads to generate $210 million and that puts total downloads counting non-exclusive at 13 to 14.5 million which is much higher than the analysis of 192 of the leading iStock contributors would indicate.  (See: http://www.selling-stock.com/Article/istockphoto-download-trends). I still think my download analysis or around 10 million is fairly accurate. I would like to see more exclusive contributors weigh in to this discussion and let us know what their average sale is.

My numbers show that buyers paid between $25 and $30 per image.  Taking 192 members and extrapolating for everyone just may not be that accurate.

I'm Exclusive.  My numbers are very similar to those of tickstock - based on my royalty percentage, buyers have paid an average of between $24.49 and $30.77 per image for my sales, this year, not including ELs, PP or GI.

General - Stock Video / Re: Clipcanvas shutting down?
« on: October 08, 2013, 10:21 »
I think they are just very busy trying to rescue the site now, the commission is back to 50% and all the prices are the same now, that was the last big change , about a month ago, and they dont send out email about sales anymore.
My clips uploaded in February are still pending, so i dont upload anymore, payments request are fulfilled after about 2 months, but there are still sales coming in here and there, so i guess i just leave it like that and see how it goes.

If your clips uploaded in February are still pending, you should try emailing their support - I had several clips pending for months like that, and they responded quickly when I queried them.

And some of us, strangely, just enjoy taking pictures anyway...

193
No, not a good thing at all.

I presume that their intention, once they have built a humungous pile of images as mentioned, is to demote non-sellers from Signature and Plus collections down to the Main collection (and possibly on to subs in the PP) while, hopefully, promoting good sellers from the Main collection to Signature, and thereby hope to cover a whole range of quality standards in a one-stop shop.

I don't like it much myself either but I can see that they may see it as a way forward in a world where images are getting more and more plentiful, and cheaper, all the time.  It remains to be seen how well it will work though...

General Stock Discussion / Re: top 5 video sites
« on: September 13, 2013, 02:48 »
Agreed, ShutterStock and Pond5, with ClipCanvas, are the only ones doing anything much for me, though my video portfolio is very small and very simple.

You should also consider that those sites accept editorial (unreleased) video clips too, where iStock doesn't.  An extra bonus.

195
You're doing something wrong.

When I type "woman real estate agent" I get 2118 results, and they look like a pretty good result to me.

It does disambiguate to "woman" and "real estate agent" but that seems appropriate enough...

Sue - judging from those figures, you seem to have suffered particularly badly from all the changes; my July $$s weren't the best, but it was still 4th BMY and better than 8 of the months in 2012.

Downloads, of course, are a different story...

Hope things improve there for you anyway. I've always enjoyed looking through your portfolio.

198
Well, I would consider myself a fairly "average" exclusive, but like ShadySue, I don't make anywhere near $2500/month on iStock, and even my BME isn't close.

I suspect it's a case where the sample size and variation is such that the average isn't very representative;  it is likely skewed by a few very high earners against a large number of moderate sellers.  I would think the median figure given in the poll, $12,405/annum, is much closer to the experience for most of us.  Certainly it's a lot more like mine.
There are a lot of people doing it full time and $12,000 is nowhere near enough for a full time living so I'm pretty sure there are many people making more than that.

But the figures from the poll you are quoting don't refer only to full time exclusives.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: GI Connect and Independents
« on: July 18, 2013, 11:04 »
There's information on GI Connect here - for what it's worth.

My understanding is that all content is available to GI Connect, and that it's some sort of pay-per-click advertising thingy, so yes, your images will potentially be on it.  But don't expect to make much out if it.

As for the black bar appearing and then disappearing, there was a problem with GI Sales for Exclusives where they all got lumped in to a GI Connect payment for Feb/March (it varied) so some of us had some brief excitement when a couple of hundred dollars appeared for no obvious reason - but it was just an error, and when the GI Sales were reprocessed correctly it was taken away again.

All of which doesn't explain why your payment would have appeared and then gone away, as you're not Exclusive and presumably don't have any GI Sales.  Anyway, GI Sales are normally rather more than that.  But it could be related somehow.

I suspect we may never know...
