Sorry to hear that. People are screaming BMEs everywhere? I doubt it. Not a cosolation but I really dont think too many independants here are doing all that much better.
I'm sure it is a mixed bag. Things are going pretty well for me (started in 2006), but it took work rebuilding it. I don't envy the task ahead for any long time exclusive jumping into independence.

...deliver the growth in numbers a stock company needs to show in order to satisfy investors.
This is kind of an interesting expression because I kind of feel like it is talking about me too as a contributor (not as an investor). My current personal experience with SS is that I have to upload huge amounts to stay steady with my income. The only push in earnings I noticed lately was the rush of enhanced licenses which has dried out sadly.
That was kind of the conclusion I came to as well, and I decided I didn't want to continue to keep feeding the beast more and more as the years go on. I just wasn't sure I could keep up. Although, they did prove me wrong by selling a bunch of extended licenses this month. But, last month was pretty awful (circa 2008).

I think that sooner or later ss will not be as good a place as it has been up til now for image contributors view
That time is already happening now for me, so I don't really have to imagine. I don't know much about stocks, but I'd definitely be wary about investing money. I just don't have a lot of faith in the long term future success of some of these micro companies. There just seems to be some inherent flaws in their models.

Down from August, but still my 7th BME.

Thanks again everyone.
My thought behind the goal was to have a lot of unique images that can only be purchased at my own site and a few other sites that I want to grow my earnings at. It seems like all the work has paid off because my earnings are back up despite having eliminated several major sites. Hopefully, things continue to grow.

At the beginning of the year, I set a goal to double my portfolio from a little over 4000 images to 8000 images. Today, I uploaded my 8000th image at MyStockVectors.com, so I achieved that goal. Release the balloons and queue the parade music.
Sorry if this is too much of a pimping topic. It took a lot of work and planning to achieve this, so I just wanted to share it.

While this is an interesting topic, it is pretty meaningless without all the other relevant details like how long you've been submiting to (different sites), how large your portfolio is at the different sites, how your port has been growing or not, etc.
I'd need a whole topic just to explain all that in detail. I'll follow cthoman's lead and post my top overall months: (After four years in microstock)
1 - Mar 2012 2 - Feb 2012 3 - Nov 2011 4 - Apr 2012 5 - Sept 2011 6 - Sept 2012 6 - Oct 2011 7 - May 2012 8 - June 2012 9 - Aug 2012 10 - July 2012
Nice steady growth.

Interesting topic. These are my top 10 earning months in microstock:
BME - Oct 2010 2nd - May 2012 3rd - Nov 2010 4th - Mar 2011 5th - Aug 2012 6th - Jan 2011 7th - Mar 2012 8th - Apr 2010 9th - Apr 2012 10th - Jun 2010
There's a good chance one of them will get pushed off the list by this month as well. I'm not sure about individual agency stats. They come and go, rise and fall, etc. It's mostly about overall performance.

So, you can't shoot what he says not to shoot, and you can't shoot what he says to shoot. This is a tough business!
The secret is just to not listen, then you can do whatever you want.

Sounds interesting. Sign me up. I guess I forgot to mention that an initial signup fee or monthly subscription fee works for me as well.

Jon and I are kicking around some ideas on how to improve the search. We have an idea right now of maybe making a percentage based system to help return the results in a "best first" format. Example the phrase cow being searched and it finds the keyword cows in the list. That matches 3 of 4 characters, vs finding the word coworkers where it would be 3 of 9. So the higher percentage would be cows (shown first).
We have a lot more ideas and will be improving this search.
That sounds like it could work. I think weighting for having terms in the title and description would probably be a nice feature too. That way you get images of cows before images of farms with cows in the background. But, I'm not really sure what is possible.

I can't speak to Ktools competitors, but the search is poor compared to my competitors. Granted, most of my competitors are custom built solutions. Still... the fact remains that when customers come to my site, the search is going to be noticeably inferior to pretty much any other site. That's not a deal breaker now because most of my traffic is walk in from Google, so I can let Google's search do the heavy lifting. But I also realize at some point (if my site continues to grow), I'm going to have to get it fixed or have a custom solution built.

You can always shop at some of the smaller guys like Mystockvectors.com, Clipartof.com, or Toonvectors.com. They might have a different selection there.
True. And finally I did yesterday.
I'm glad to see people are looking at the alternatives. I can't speak for others, but I know I have thousands more images (probably double my portfolio) on those three sites than I do elsewhere.

Ok, just thought I might share this little story: yesterday I got a small yet important Catalogue design job. The client wished at a specific place a Vector Image - nothing really special, a womans head with some symbols of a specific industry I may not disclose. Well, I thought that this would be a easy Job but found that I had to invest a little more time to find a suiting vector. I looked in 6 different places and learned that almost 90% of vectors of the desired style are just copies of one and each other. Note that the theme is not really something rare. In my desperation and urgent desire to shut the office down ( D: ) I decided to have a look at istock. THEY HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I found 55 pages of more or less relevant Vectors at DP, over 100 pages at DT, and six (6!) at istock. Furthermore the quality was average at best. Wow. I never thought istock would be such a loser but off course it makes me happy to see that they fail with _their_ policy.
One lesson learned yesterday: 1. upload limits are bad. Today you might be happy to safe some disk space. Tomorrow you cannot compete because you are missing content. 2. istock is dead.
You can always shop at some of the smaller guys like Mystockvectors.com, Clipartof.com, or Toonvectors.com. They might have a different selection there.

I can't say I agree with $2 and $10 (seems too low). They don't really mention royalty percentages either (not surprising after looking at Pocketstock). If I were going to boycott Shutterstock or any other agency, I'd be asking for a lot more and would want to have a lot more leverage. I guess I'll just stick with my one man revolutionary movement.

I sent them a sitemail and they changed them all for me.
That's what I did. They changed them pretty quickly.

No they didn't. All images are priced the same. The only thing that changes the price at SS is the volume you are buying or the license you need.
It is quite clear that the majority of buyers prefer all images priced the same and it is probably the greatest factor in SS's success.
You are right. The images are priced the same. I guess I meant higher price points and not higher priced collections or images. Really though, it is trying to accomplish the same thing... Trying to get your customers to spend more per image. Which they did pretty successfully by looking at their IPO statement.

Knowing what images earn and their potential, I wouldn't pay more than 2 years income for photos (especially considering the work and risk of uploading / getting rejected) and I wouldn't sell my images for less than 5 years income.
Exactly. There is a disconnect between what the photographer feels their images are worth and what a potential investor would value them at. That's why this idea keeps being suggested but nothing ever comes of it.
I agree. That is probably why a lot of these deals don't get done. Plus, the logistics are tricky to transfer portfolios, accounts, etc. I guess on a side note, I would be more interested in taking on a partner for MyStockVectors (sharing royalties), than selling my portfolio. It would have to be the right partner though. Probably someone to handle the SEO, promotion, and marketing side of things.

We have one site that, even with a pretty low rpd, manages to generate the most income for (most) contributors, has the simplest royalty structure out there and the most transparent pricing structures - coincidence??
I guess in argument against this point. SS did introduce higher priced images, and I think the argument could be made that it is the part of their business that is growing the most.
