General Stock Discussion / Re: 123RF payment
« on: October 15, 2009, 21:05 »
Bloody Hell.

The you've got funds notice went to my correspondence e-mail address.  what?  They've always paid me correctly in the past, nothing has changed on my profile and the paypal box has my correct Paypal info.

Let's see how long this takes to straighten out.

No payment and my earnings have gone down by $1.33 to boot.

Retracting my statement.  I have an e-mail that says I've received funds.  123 shows that the money is still in my account, I guess it will update overnight.

Cost: $5199

Make that $6499 in Canada - even though our dollar is very very close to par with the U.S.

If you got great photo it will not last at low price point for ever. Excellent photos will be sold for their true value established by marketplace. It is pathetic that great photos are sold for 30 cents.

No one is buying photos for 30 cents, they are paying $200-$250 for a subscription.

But, like the Gap has Old Navy, if Istock is the Gap wouldn't it make sense for them to groom an Old Navy site that has a library that can compete with Dreamstime, Shutterstock and Fotolia?

Istock is certainly in a league of their own and their prices are beginning to migrate up.  Yes, they have exclusive content and impeccable standards, but they don't have the same content as their competitors:  the artists who snubbed 20% commission, or those who didn't pass the entrance exam, and of course all those rejected files that are good enough to sell well for the other sites.

Are you using ie Suljo?  I use ie but I have to log in to firefox to do anything with istock.  This version of iexplorer really sucks.  At least 10% of the web isn't compatible.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime to start selling prints
« on: October 07, 2009, 14:37 »
Istock, the Canadian stock company, was only selling prints in the U.S. last I knew.  They must have a third party that does the print work for them in the U.S. If they sold in Canada they would have to collect retail sales tax and GST, maybe that is why they aren't offered here.

I would dig it if they would let us design prints to sell as prints an not stock photos (adding text, borders and other elements).

Is she still there?  I asked for the link here once, and was told her portfolio was gone.

New Sites - General / Re: Clustershot.com

Are pro accounts $20 per month or per year?  The word "subscription" leads me to believe it is per year?

General Stock Discussion / Re: September 2009 earnings breakdown
« on: October 01, 2009, 12:32 »
My top 4 made 85.7% of my sales.

IS 26.1%
DT 21%
FT 19.33% (BME)
SS 19.31% (A-WME - last december was $4 less.)

One of my wost months on  SS yet.  First time FT outsold them, even if it is by just a few cents.

1761
Stock sites should delete all crap they accepted years ago, snap shots, pics with poor background removal, dark pictures, etc. They should do a big clean up and accept more pictures on what they consider "very well covered" by cleaning old and crap ones

Does Istock still move poor sellers to the dollar bin?  I don't have any there, but I believe they used to approach the artist when a photo has no sales for a year or maybe 2 years and this gives the photo a new chance for downloads.

FT tells you that your photo has had 24 months with no sales and suggest you add it to the free photos section.  I would rather delete it, or just let it sit there.

The other sites should really do something similar.  In a way I like it that FT automatically doesn't delete the files, but maybe they should.

Pixart, we're already getting 25 cent subscription sales. In fact on SS, that's all I get.  But, I appreciate your optimism and who knows, you might be right.

Thanks for setting me straight stocktastic, I was only thinking of my experience.  I think I made 20 cents, but sales were so strong back then it didn't take long at all to get a bump in earnings.  Now, that's much harder because either (a) more photographers are diluting the sales; or (b) they don't have the sales they used to (c) combination of (a)&(b).  I am still at least 4 months away from my next bump in earnings at SS.  I have one referral who has really, really nice model released photos and he doesn't even sell every day.  If he joined when I did he would have been a star and done very well - but these days it must be discouraging.  Thankfully there is still a reward for sticking with them.

Then there's Crestock.... I don't contribute there so I will censor my true feelings about their 25 cent subs:)   And I did not opt-in for the IS/Jupiter deal.  At least I had a choice.

Anyhow - these are legitimate businesses that exist only to make a profit.  The industry is still young, but it is showing signs of maturity.  The top 4 are leaving the others in the dust and can now raise their prices, introduce "Vetta" and premium collections.   The biggest problem for us is to keep mass producing amazing quality photos to get a piece of that pie.  RPD may be getting higher, but sales may be lower = the plateau that many are experiencing.

You will never get 25 cent or 10 cent subscription sales.  Prices are on the rise and they will not go backward.  These big boys are all just measuring the temperature right now.  IS introduced a good subs program, DT made the first move and introduced a tiered subs program and SS has raised their prices every year but this 2009, and that was a good stand considering the economy.  FT introduce the Premium plan (yet, not so great for us).  YES, a new agency will come along and offer a worse deal.  But - how many here will be joining these new agencies?  The agencies with the crappy returns won't get YOU or ME to contribute, sure they'll get the Mom with a new Rebel, but that doesn't mean they will find buyers for the amateur photos.    The top 4 will not be lowering rates.  If anything, they have introduced smaller sizes, not smaller prices.  The other 3 or 4 might try to introduce some riddiculous scheme to inch forward in the market, but they do so at the risk of every last one of us leaving them.  If 123 suddenly paid you 10 cents for subs, would you stay?  Face it, if you are like me, my top 4 sites earn more than 80% of my micro earnings.  I could drop the bottom sites and not see much of a dip in earnings.  They aren't going to be stupid.

Istock wants photos that come out of the camera close to perfect.  They don't like sharpening, noise reduction, added saturation.  It sounds like you have spent quite a bit of time manipulating these photos already, perhaps that is a sign that you should look for 3 fresh photos.   Istock is very strict with isolations, and I'm betting they will be critical of the praying mantis shots.  I'm on a "not-calibrated laptop" but I can see fringing like crazy, and the rear legs and antennae look like the light has bled through.  Maybe it's just my laptop?

Getting accepted at Istock is an accomplishment that it is worth all the fuss.   You already have an advantage by posting photos for other IS contributors to look evaluate.

Antonio, thanks for posting the Istock Payoneer fees.  Does anyone have the Dreamstime fees or some other Payoneer card so we can compare?

Isn't it crazy the way everyone's experiences are so wildly different?  This year so far I have made 87% more on DT than 123.

Traveller might be onto something here.  If DT has a 6 month rule to delete your photos, they should really have a 6 month notice with price changes.  I have to say they give us better notice than most of the others - like FT.  Oh, I forgot - they don't give notice, we just find out policy changes by accident.

I have a nice little story about Canstock.  I posted here that I couldn't get ftp to work and that the Activex uploader does'nt work either.  Java worked, so that night I started sending folders over.

The next morning Dillon called from Canstock offering to help with my ftp problem.

A few days later I received an e-mail essentially stating there is indeed a bug with Activex .

I've always heard talk that Duncan from Canstock is such a great guy.  Words can't express how impressed I was that Dillon followed a public forum post and called to offer assistance.  In the past when I've had problems with one of the various micro-agencies  1.  Site won't return e-mails 2. Site doesn't understand my problem 3.  Site does not agree with my problem 4. Site says "it's You not Us" or tell me to use Firefox instead.

So thanks Dillon!

Reminds me I better complete those files that I uploaded.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Attach a fake Model Release?
« on: September 24, 2009, 21:21 »
I love microstockers!

You run businesses making imaginary profit, calculate break-even points using imaginary formulas, then declare your hobby expenses and family vacations as legitimate business expenses under imaginary government rules.

If you feel that faking a model release is "wrong", why can't you imagine just one more time that it isn't?

I LOVE microstockers!

And Wilddingo we LOVE you.  I hope you are having a great day.

Nikon / Re: Nikons response to the Canon EOS 5D Mark II
« on: September 24, 2009, 21:18 »
Nikon Rumors said the D700 is being discontinued.  Anyhow, they say it is discontinued at Best Buy.  They are also saying that a D3s is coming out in November, a D3 with video.  Nikon Rumors is - well - rumors, but usually they prove true.

I am interested to learn more about Payoneer but they are very ambiguous on their website about the fees involved.  I wonder if this is because it varies between which card you sign on for - Istock or  Dreamstime for example.  They say that the fees are "better" but you must log into your account to view them.

I import goods a few times a year from the U.S. to Canada and not one of my vendors accepts Paypal.  So I have to convert Paypal money to Canadian dollars, place my American order and pay MasterCard for converting my Canadian dollars to American.

I just got a U.S.$ credit card.  Can you transfer Paypal balances to credit cards, or just to bank accounts?

If I get a Payoneer card, can I use Dreamstimes for Istock payouts?  Or do I need 2 cards?

I sent 3 to DT last night before bed, "pending time 89 hours" and they were live when I got up this morning.  Those review times are remarkable for DT!  Would be a good time for you to upload.

A steamer is definitely a requirement with location work and they do belong in the photography category.  They are costly and difficult to find.  Backdrops are a huge dilema for me, they are horribly wrinkled by the time I arrive at a school for class photos.  At home I cannot leave them setup so right now they are folded and when the next client rings I will have to get the steamer out again.

Sorry about the ShamWow joke.  It's the most annoying info commercial of all time and the phrase has become part of the popular culture in North America.

1775
Cummon Suljo.  You have a ShamWow. Admit it.
