Envato / Re: PhotoDune in Open Beta
« on: August 12, 2011, 12:48 »
It's interesting that so many top contributors will accept 25% commissions, low prices and very low EL prices from a low selling site.  I can understand why others then join them.  It just fills me with fear for the future of microstock.

We shouldn't always assume that the top contributors get the same c****y conditions as the rest.
Theoretically a new site could offer excellent terms to some top contributors, like upload bonus, 50% or more commission and see what would happen:
the muppets see Yuri's port on such a theoretical site and would instantly queue to upload their stuff there, even if the site paid them 10 cents for an EL. The muppets cannot think independently, they have to follow somebody but don't understand that what applies to Yuri, doesn't always have to apply to them or to other people - different league, different rules. Few weeks later other sites cut commissions and prices in order to stay competitive with the low-ball agency and the muppets can only change their avatars to "contributor against proposed commission changes" :P. The urge to earn a few bucks more makes them blind and they fail to see the relationship between the cause and the effect.

Collis, can you elaborate a bit on the mindset behind the decision to charge such a small amount for extended licenses?

I think he already elaborated:

So I guess my feeling is that we are introducing new buyers, as well as (hopefully) siphoning off some buyers from our competitors :-)

Unfortunately it entails also siphoning off a substantial part of our royalties that we currently receive.

Photodune seems pretty open to conversation and critique

Well, these guys can hardly ban anyone or retaliate in any way, because many people who have been critical simply don't want to do business with them.

thats true but in the end will they hear us and perhaps raise the royalties? you guys, top contributors should really push them so they give a better deal

If you and other people hadn't submitted their content there, they would eventually offer a better deal.
Doesn't make sense to offer a better deal if people are happy to supply them. Rather prepare for cuts elsewhere.

If the top contributors could negotiate better terms, it doesn't mean that everybody else would get the same.

Not counting the ELs, maximum possible commission on photodune is miserable 2,25 USD for 20 Megapixels.

Veer XL: 5,25 USD - L: 3,50 USD
My today's downloads on DT: Level 3 TIFF: 8,91, Level 2 XL: 4,20
ISTOCK XXXL: 6-7 USD

Don't look at the percentages only, look at the prices as well.
If people are happy with 1,25 USD for Large size, the other agencies will adjust and soon you will have 7% at IS or 10% at DT...
Race to the bottom :P unsustainable :P

More likely you'll caniballize your sales elsewhere and encourage other agencies to cut commisions furthermore.
Don't complain about falling commissions if you are willing to supply ridiculous sites like photodune.

11,25 USD for ELs... c'mon :P
Last month VEER paid me 35 USD for an EL, I get regular ELs on SS for 28 USD.
Photodune's offer is a joke.

Thanks for the heads up Leaf.
20 MP XXL for 9 USD x 25% = not very attractive
I'll pass for now.

SS OD pays 2,70 USD for a much smaller size.
Photodune Large 5 $ x 25% = 1,25 $. IS Large - around 2- 2,50 USD.
Extended Licence: 45 USD x 25% is a joke. :P

Race to the bottom, I don't think it is in our interest that this agency succeeds.

In the application you're supposed to prove that you won't be wasting their time by continuously submitting images that won't get approved or that nobody will buy. You're supposed to prove that you understand more or less what stock photography is.

Also, the black areas don't look good.
One MSG member wrote some time ago: "Microstock photography is not about light and shadow, it is about light and light."
Avoid harsh shadows if you want to sell.

The lower left corner is out of focus, which kind of spoils the whole image for me.
I am not sure about its microstock potential anyway.
The toning limits its sale potential, on microstock colourful images tend to sell much better.

The purpose of Internet Exploder, its raison d'tre is to download Firefox, Chrome or Opera.
IE performs this task quite well. I don't use it for anything else.

Of all the common browsers I found IE to be by far the worst. The worst interface, the slowest and the worst overall user experience.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: When they tun off the tap?
« on: August 04, 2011, 11:27 »
How about a conspiracy theory to play with. It's in their best interest to not have people reach the next level. Could the best match be configured to throttle people back in the search who are on target to hit the next level?

Why bother with the best match when theoretically they might not report the sales correctly?
A "bug", a "glitch" or "turning off the tap", why not? Money is not what will make the contributors happy after all.
We won't find out until somebody tests them or there is an audit.
I don't have any confidence in their integrity, but that's just me.

Slovenian, why don't you post some Slovenian humour for a change? I'm sure that would be fun:)

The shortest joke in the world: "A couple is walking along the Slovenian coast..."

- How do Slovenes change gears in car?
- First, second, BORDER!

- Why is it forbidden to jump into swimming pools in Slovenia?
- Because Italians would complain about water splashing.

From which Slovenian town/village do you come from?
I've seen most of them:)

Beeps on startup can be as simple as poorly seated ram.

Jbarber is right. Each mainboard has several possible sequences of those beeps. If you consulted the mainboard manual, you could find out what those beeps meant. Some problems can be rectified. Loose RAM is one of possible causes.

Mine has been only dripping for the last few months, but it seems they turned it on again last week. Yours will have to remain off for the time being, I'm afraid. It's my turn. :P

I agree with click_click.
The location with the lighthouse is fantastic, my kind of place (BTW, where is it?).
There was great potential, unfortunately the composition is not convincing at all, doesn't have the necessary impact.
The horizon is tilted...

Yes, it is a very good cage for all the exclusives that were lured there, once you're in, it is not easy to break out.
Less competition for us in the real-world, that is a positive effect that IS has on the stock market.

It's a bug.
If you're logging in using the field in the upper right corner, try the other field on the left where it says "Remember me" or something like this. It worked for me two times.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Are Downloads Posted near-Real Time?
« on: July 20, 2011, 15:16 »
I was reporting this in my thread (summer slump seems to be agency dependent), but since picture tells more than 1000 words, here you go:

3 days of no DLs and than a day with large sized DLs, all M+, one of them was a XXXL. Not a strong month on IS, even though I'm having great days like the 18th was. And yes the graph is lacking yesterday's and today's sales, which are modest and small sized, only XS and S.

Slovenian, check out my graph:

I used to have much more regular downloads with a smaller portfolio.
