Yes, my sales did stop. But it apparently didn't stop for everyone - my weekly ranking by about 3000!

I had a good day today, but there was nothing in the middle. Good sales before I got up. Decent sales after dinner sometime. I thought it was more of a posting delay.

If you want to search for it, earlier this year Scott Kelby wrote a fabulous article about shooting NFL and the pressure of tagging and wiring those photos. (Sorry, I can't remember if it was on his blog, Kelby One, or if it was a guest post somewhere.) I think tagging is a much tougher job than facial recognition, but obviously when you have 7 minutes to dump a card, cull, edit, tag and wire 3 photos from 1000 every second counts.
I believe we are having two different conversations. Would I personally use facial recognition? No, never. 90% of my income is youth sports/school/dance. The largest graduation class I have had is maybe 125. What are you talking about, convocation where they hand out diplomas? Why aren't they uploaded sequentially? Again.... diplomas are handed out by class and usually honors/awards then alphabetical? Why would it be so hard to lump each class in a folder sequentially? Shooting soccer tournaments is organized into team/game folders. Up to parents to find their own proofs in that game's folder. 205
General Stock Discussion / Re: Adobe is selling single images for $5.00« on: September 10, 2015, 15:47 »Yes and lots of other agencies are selling for anything between, 0.20c - 0.38c. I rather have the fiver. Who is selling photos for 20 cents? If getting paid 30-50% of 20 cents, why on earth would anyone contribute? 206
Software / Re: Photographic Tools« on: September 10, 2015, 11:08 »
If it is a commercial photo (i.e NHL) where every second is of the essence, yes facial recognition/tagging would make sense.
Unless you have personal info for the people you are tagging it is pretty pointless. If you are proofing online, they would appear in order and presumably they collect their diplomas alphabetically so that wouldn't be an issue. The moms have Rebels, the kids have Iphones and the parties have instant photo booths. The only thing I really do anymore is an actual portrait sessions and sometimes a school will ask me to come take a class photo on the steps of Parliament or at their banquet hall for example. Sometimes I have a portrait client AND I'm at the ceremony I will shoot my clients - the parents always buy these shots. But a whole class on spec? Not sure it's not worth the effort any more. Sports - again, are you wondering about spec shooting games? I can't see face recognition being very accurate with helmets and cages and visors. I don't see it as necessary either unless you need to wire a newspaper. The only guarantee of sales in action photography is to be commissioned by red #9 and shoot a game for him. Ask him to split the fee with a couple friends and you have a good nights work. I've gone in to shoot one kid and they are injured in the first 45 seconds. No, I would never use facial recognition. If I was shooting the Olympics on the other hand..... 207

Yes, much better! All my columns now one after the next. Maybe would have been a better choice to stick the footage right next to the photo area, I thought all the referrals business was going away?

What does "for customers of CreativeLive only" mean? Is that something else you have to pay for?
ONLY considering because I have a new body that isn't supported by Lightroom and the extra step to convert to DNG before I can edit is starting to drive me mad. 209

Has DP hit the status of swanky offices, free food and trips or are they still in a basement somewhere? They are likely lowering commissions so they can survive - but not many of us care.

Everything about Istock is interesting - now that I am not a contributor there. I can sit back without cringing and witness what a spectacular display of greed and bad choices they have presented.

An inside story on the rise and fall of Istock would be quite captivating (to us at least). It was such a spectacular spoil of power. A startup with a quarter billion annual sales (I'm sure I'm off by a few million... but close enough), ruined by greed, bad decisions, alienating the staunch supporters who got them there, and the dramatic fall from grace.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Is Shutterstock using software to "first pass" review all images?« on: August 01, 2015, 12:10 »
Time of day wasn't exactly my point. The fact that the submission was received, opened reviewed and rejected (for something that I can't even see), email sent and received in 6.5 minutes was the point. I just have a hard time believing that there are reviewers sitting at their screens any time of day, any where in the world waiting for a photo to be submitted so they can review it.
Maybe reviewing has also become cutthroat.... artists are so selfish we have never considered the poor reviewers starving for their next photo to arrive... ![]() 218

This morning I submitted one little photo at 12:39 and it was rejected at 12:46 for being soft. 1st, maybe I don't know what soft means because to my eye at 250% it looks just fine, and 2nd I have a hard time believing that there is a reviewer sitting at their work station at 12:39 in the morning anxiously waiting for someone to submit a photo so they can review it. I feel like this had to be a programmed response.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Upgrading Nikon d90 - Nikon D810 or Canon 5D Mark iii« on: July 27, 2015, 12:18 »
I went with the 810 over the 750 because the flash synch is only 1/200 on the 750. Why? When every other Nikon I've owned is 1/250?
I feel like I made a mistake getting such a beast. Had to order faster cards or the buffering would drive me insane. My copy of Lightroom 4.4 does not recognize the 810 so I have to convert to DNG first - or ultimately get a CC subscription - and storage is a whole other issue. It would be nice to think that with those big beautiful files it would boost my micro income, but in reality, a 38 cent sub is a 38 cent sub and I should just downsize everything I submit. 220

What a delicious twist.... One of the most respected agency reps (Scott) coming in, when two of the least respected agency reps (The Chad and Oleg) will most likely be gone next year at this time, they are surely only sticking around for a predetermined length of time to fulfill obligations of the deal.
Joanne, send Scott a message directly about joining up while he still has time to speak with content providers. 221
Nikon / Re: D200 - Strange lines since Nikon clean« on: July 22, 2015, 10:08 »
Mantis, do you qualify for the NPS program? I had problems with a new body - well, 2 new 810 bodies that blanked out. It wound up being a bent pin in the grip. But I was in Mexico in May to shoot a wedding and was not happy when I took my brand new replacement body out of the bag and it didn't work. It really helps that I have a relationship with my dealer, they went miles out of their way to help me (I process with them so I pick up prints a couple times a week, everyone knows me by name)
When the manager was speaking with the Nikon rep, something came up that I had no idea existed. Here is a link to a Nikon pro program in Canada. I assume they have it in other countries as well but you will have to dig for it. You may qualify. It is free for Nikon, and they said Canon has a similar program but there is a fee. https://help.nikon.ca/app/answers/detail/a_id/8133/~/nps-membership-in-canada I have 12 items on the list but only one body that qualifies ![]() edit: realize that link is a little vague, but this is from my dealer's email . He did mention that if you were part of NPS (Nikon Professional Services) Nikon has many benefits, including 72hr service turnaround*, and access to the Nikon loaner pool*. If youre not part of NPS, its not much good mentioning, but something to consider in the future, depending what you have. Ill attach the link, since theres no cost either. Im not sure how quickly theyd be able to process the application either. 222

Did you just go indie in Feb? That would mean it's only been 5 months, and it's simply not the season right now to judge sales. Summer
This year I dumped Featurepics, and when I was waiting for a Veer payout I hit $42 so I won't be deleting them until they make sales (but how will they make any sales if I don't upload?). BigStock is tanked, I still get a few payouts there - but when I look at my history I have been making about 1 sale for every 30 subs so I've got no problem cutting them off. Gosh, who will I have left to whine about? 224
Shutterstock.com / Re: New Contributor TOS at Shutterstock« on: July 02, 2015, 00:58 »
Just a thought, but I wonder if there is a sale in the future and they are trying to wrap up some legacy business - maybe payout and close stagnant accounts.
