General Stock Discussion / Re: Moving on from IS exclusive
« on: January 09, 2012, 09:18 »
It's generally not a good idea to "have all your eggs in one basket," which is why I've never gone exclusive to any site.  I was accepted on DT, FT, and DP on my first submission.  For SS, it took no less than eight submissions!  It seemed to be a moving target.  At least one submission contained only images that were approved in other submissions, but some were rejected nevertheless.  It was worth the effort, though, because I now get daily sales at SS (although at 33 cents per sale, it will take a long time to realize any significant income).  I make payout every other month, working diligently toward making it every month.  The inspectors are still very unpredictable and inconsistent, as they are among other sites as well.  Interestingly, there isn't even any consistency between sites, meaning that images which are rejected by one site will be accepted by another, and vice versa.  So among them, all of my images end up for sale somewhere, which makes a very good case for nonexclusivity.  I find that my efforts are best invested in SS, DT, FT, and DP, although I do see AllYouCanStock.com as very promising.  I've only had video on IS, but I no longer upload there.

<sarcasm> Oh, oh.  Here we go again.  Someone spouting logic with rational thought, which if left unchecked, would result in the masses thinking for themselves, which would lead to the disintegration of society on a global scale.  It must be stopped!!!  </sarcasm>   :P

Here's an idea... take a screenshot and save it as a .jpg on your web site server.  In your list, include a link to the .jpg file.  That way, the list is minimal and clean, and a client can click on the link if he/she wishes to verify it or see it in context.

I'd be interested to know how you're able to find this information.  I, too, would like to know where/how my material is being used.  I might like to put such a list on my web site as well.

Yes, your project would require an EL.  The difference?  An agency is buying it for an on behalf of the client.  The client is the end user, whereas in your case, you will be reselling the stock material to the end user (your customer).  In other words, you're buying the stock material for resale, whereas the agency is not.  That's why it would require an EL.

General Stock Discussion / Question About Property Releases
« on: January 04, 2012, 18:06 »
I have some shots of a model inside a small tourist attraction.  I have a signed model release, but no property release.  I'm assuming, therefore, that due to the lack of a property release, the photos will have to be editorial.  Should I bother with uploading the model release?

A beautiful young model holding "2012" in her hand...

I had the same problem, so I switched to Core FTP Lite, available free from www.coreftp.com.  Problem solved.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Model: Middle-aged or Mature?

Thanks, everyone, for your input.  As a side note - I'm 52, and I get a lot of perks & benefits as an old fat guy that I didn't get before.   :P

General Stock Discussion / Model: Middle-aged or Mature?
« on: December 31, 2011, 10:22 »
I'm working with a lovely 45-year-old female model for stock, and this is my first time working with an older model.  I'd like to get some thoughts on whether you'd label her middle-aged, mature, or something else.

Yes.  Several of us have mentioned it in the forum on the site.  I used the batch editor instead of the content editor, and had no problems with it.

I have 547 files in my CC portfolio, with one sale and a total of 46 cents.  Hallelujah!  Mom can finally afford that operation!  The last file was uploaded at the end of May of this year (2011).  I stopped uploading because I thought some of the rejections were irrational, and I saw no activity.  Given what John has said about his plans, I'm thinking maybe I'll push my portfolio up to 1000 with some of my recent material and see what happens, assuming the inspectors have matured a bit.   :)

I stopped uploading to BS a while back because of too many irrational rejections and virtually no sales.  SS is just the opposite, and is doing well for me.  Weird, isn't it?

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Watch your refunds
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:12 »
I don't think you can buy a video for $11.00, either.  My royalty from the sale of the video was $7.10, but they took back $11.00 for the refund.  If I can do the same thing - give someone X dollars and take back X+Y dollars - sign me up!!!   :P

The email message reads as follows:

"We regret to inform you that a refund has been issued for a purchase of your file #7101268:
This is in reference to the file downloaded on 02/09/11 for the amount of 11.00."

If the retail price of the file were $11.00, I certainly wouldn't have received $7.10.  (It's a video file, not a photograph.)  At 20% royalty rate, I would receive $2.20.

They gave me $7.10 initially for the sale, then took back $11.00 for the refund.  How does that work???  Maybe I'm in the wrong business!   :P

I had six sales in November on CanStockPhoto.  Nothing since.  (My portfolio is 1,222 files.)

I was just notified of a refund of $11.00 on a file for which I was only paid $7.10, and the sale occurred almost four months ago.  At this rate, we'll all be paying them!   ???

I must admit that you're right, MikLav.  Kinda convoluted, but once you get the hang of it, it's not so bad, and much better than some.  I'm uploading, and if I'm lucky, it will turn out to be a productive site.

I uploaded a batch of photos, nagivated successfully through the upload mechanism on the site, but it says a model release has to be in a zipped file.  I don't remember how I uploaded the model release for my first batch, and I can't afford the time it would take for me to guess, explore, read, and try something, hoping it works.  I can tell you that I've never put a model release in a zipped file.  It's less than a megabyte, for cryin' out loud.  And since I'm not about to do so for one site, I'm done.  I'm out.

DepositPhotos / Re: DP, is really coming on!
« on: December 20, 2011, 18:06 »
I've noticed a slight increase in activity lately on DP, but nothing to write home about.  RF123 remains dismal for me.  I've stopped uploading completely to BS, CC, Zoonar, Panther Media, and Pixmac.  I've only had one sale on Alamy, but I remain hopeful.  I've even had some sales lately on MostPhotos, can believe it?  And I don't even talk about IS, much less upload anything to 'em.  SS is still king, but I think the site to watch is AllYouCanStock.com.  Of course, your mileage may vary.   :P

I had the same question, so upon examination and a cursory investigation, I came to the conclusion that there isn't enough of a market in stock (whether micro, macro, or RM) to make portaits worthwhile.  I'm talking here about actual, traditional portraiture.  The stock buyers seem to want images that are much more commercial and have a commercial application.  I realize that this encompasses a very broad range of material (thank God), but not portraiture.  Your experience, of course, might be different.
