Although I make my FT living from microstock, I voted for flipping cheeseburgers (actually, you don't flip them once you have added the cheese ;) ).

6 years ago, I would have told them it is difficult, but possible to make a living at microstock.  Now, I don't think it would be for someone just starting out.  The only ones I have seen join and succeed in the past couple of years have been image factories staffed with experienced industry professionals.

+1

There is still room in the industry, but most of those who would succeed really have better options elsewhere.

Most of those who ask really don't have a good understanding of what's involved and underestimate the input that's required to be successful.

It changed again today.

Oddly, most of my files have moved toward the front of their searches and today has been a slow day.

Didn't lobo just say they were going to leave it alone for a while? A while must mean a couple days in IS time.

They must have realised how bad that version was in practice - to me this new version produces a more polished looking result, and still has some newer files in the mix. It will be interesting to see how long this stays and the results it produces.

Fotolia is not talking about our commission and our part of subscription... They are pointing their finger in prices...
But, as I said before, we are on "lower price agencies" because of them and their percentag, (Fotolia's 13% and Istock's 15%-19%) that is too small part for us...
We should have 35-50% on FT and IS, then we won't search for an alternative earning...

Exactly - they don't care about the artist - it may well be that 50% of $1 = 50c, and 13% of $2 that they pay = 26c, as may well be the case at FT if you're being paid in $$.

Really there's nothing that FT has said or done in the last few years that has been in any way in favour of contributors. Its their own revenue that they're worried about now as always.

We need a page on this forum with tables we can collectively keep updated

that's what the wiki is for... :)

Err.... the only info on there seems to be about an SEO company?!?

Folks,

It has come to our attention that some new agencies are selling the same contributor content at prices far less than most other microstock agencies. We feel that this is bad for both photographers and stock agencies. We do understand photographers are free to choose their own destiny in a free market economy, and our intention in these actions  is to encourage everyone to support fair pricing for customers and commissions for contributors. Only a handful of sites and contributors have been identified thus far, and we will communicate with them before taking any action.

By sponsoring and uploading to sites that undercut prices, photographers put the whole industry in jeopardy - and we feel our duty is to take action. If the community agrees with our approach, the status quo remains. If the community wants to place down pressure on pricing, we'll adjust accordingly, as a measure to be fair and respectful to our costumers and stay competitive. Keep in mind that when rankings drop, the ability to charge more for images goes away - and that hurts everyone's bottom line, including ours.

Sorry but wan't Fotolia the site that championed having a free photos section and website dedicated to giving them all away?

http://www.microstockdiaries.com/photoxpress-and-free-photo-strategies.html

I notice that the previously *free* site that Fotolia was running is now a subscription service that guarantees buyers (So now the only free thing about the site is the images that you don't pay contributors commissions for that were previously naively donated):

BEST PRICES GUARANTEED*

The packages that fit your needs, the prices that fit your wallet. PhotoXpress offers the best packages you won't get anywhere else. Guaranteed! If you find a lower price package, we will match it!* Packages start at just $10 dollars. Now that makes better sense!

Obviously you don't want any other site undercutting you because you want to be the lowest in the business GUARANTEED!

For all those asking Chad to name names, don't expect a real answer - this whole policy is already on the wrong side of trade practices legislation in too many jurisdictions to name.

I'm doing ok with this version as well - not great, but the fact that about 1/4 of my online portfolio is less than 3 mths old should help a bit.

The problem with the current best match is that for some searches - "Business" for example you get the same familiar faces - all files with over 1000 DLS - the invincible files.

Other searches, "Croatia" for example which happens to have my highest selling file (just under 500 DLS) has 48 files from the same contributor that were uploaded in the last week, most of which feature tiny sailing boats over an ocean. My file meawhile has dropped to about #1000 in that search. I doubt that this is really the sort of result people are looking for in that search.

The problem is there just doesn't seem to be any balance.

Pond5 / Re: Photos at Pond5

Great to see Pond5 here - I just signed up as a video contributor there & now have my first videos online.

Hoping to see some sales soon :)

What I am trying to say is, an initial 5 rating doesn't automatically qualify a file for Vetta.

True - its almost like a consolation prize.

One of the nice things about inspections at IS is that they sometimes do go out of their way to include personalised messages, and you get some clues like this that the whole thing isn't just robotic.

No question... I'd sell too

Word from Lobo within the past hour:
"best match seems to be in a place that the Warlocks are happy with right now."
http://www.istockphoto.com/forum_messages.php?threadid=333964&page=6#post6489059

I hope they do leave it alone. Somehow this version pushed quite a few of my files closer to the top of the search. Some of my best sellers have dropped slightly but not bad.

Ultimately it may not matter because their dynamic search displays different results in different regions and may also weigh other stuff like buying patterns.

I hope whatever they have now is the same as for the past week - no complaints on sales from that version for me.

Well there seems to have been the biggest shift yet overnight. Looks like newer files are doing better, and particularly edstock. In a search for "Berlin" I get 105/200 results from edstock, including many that are full of irrelevant keywords.

Look at this for example, which makes that best match (and isn't even shot in Berlin):

Pick the relevant keywords:
Lifestyles, Horizontal, Outdoors, Tourist, Germany, Museum, Easter, Traditional Culture, Berlin, Season, River, Spree River, Bioreserve, Capital Cities, Human Interest

At the risk of straying back on topic....

Seeing as I'm still traveling, I use travel insurance as my health insurance. Happily it also covers loss and accidental damage to camera gear, travel delays etc. Judging by some of the comments here, at just under $1K per year its not such a bad deal!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Sales dropping. Istock especially.
« on: September 18, 2011, 05:51 »
Ok some thoughts:

1. The best match at Istock has been changing over the last month or so, either intentionally or unintentionally. That is going to have an effect on sales. There were a few days where we had some really unusual results coming up - that's going to have an impact, and was probably especially prominent for the high volume searches.

2. Microstock is maturing, and that is going to be felt at iStock first through being the oldest microstock with the most developed customer base. There will be a point where those with large portfolios just won't be able to achieve growth through further portfolio increases - at best you'll be able to stem losses or reach an equilibrium. Some here realise that, but the question is really where is that point, and what to do about it.

3. The above is exacerbated when there are multiple contributors producing the same "look" in volume - the pie ends up being carved up in different, but overall smaller portions.

4. In some ways what happens at iStock will also happen in other agencies - by virtue of being first to the market. Its just not possible to continue to increase sales long term in excess of the increase in quantity of images supplied.

5. At the moment, old files that became successful at the "peak" are still protected in the best match - if there's any change to that situation, there's some potentially massive falls in store for those that are doing best at the moment. Many popular searches don't have any material from the last 12 months or more.

6. For Yuri specifically: your old material is performing relatively better in the overall search compared to the new material - compare a search for "business" where you get 31/200 in the regular best match. Filter that down to the last 6 months and it goes down to 1/200 or 5/200 if you filter out Vetta, Agency and Exclusive +. Obviously theres both the effects of improving standards from the competition, volume of material with a very similar look and the favouring of Vetta & Agency all working against you in such searches.

Canon / Re: Canon Consumer Survey
« on: September 16, 2011, 03:04 »
I got it last night and filled it out. It's not a category that interests me (interchangeable lens compacts). Still have the small sensor, thus not that great for quality...

Not sure how you arrived at this but the GF1 image quality is very good. An excellent camera overall and one of my all time favorites.

I was looking at some old files from my Nikon D50 and D80 and I'd say the GF-1 has similar quality. Not groundbreaking, but still very good quality from a small rangefinder size camera.

I've been looking at the new Sony NEX-7 images and while the 24MP is impressive I think the image quality is a bit below stock standards.

If Canon came out with a decent offering I'd probably switch from the GF-1.

Yeah I agree - a big factor though is the lenses you put in front of it. Up to now mostly the micro4/3 lenses have been consumer grade. When I was using the GF1 with the Olympus 4/3 glass the results were noticeably better (but obviously the system became cumbersome). Pair the GF1 with something like  the Olympus 50mm f2 macro and you'll start to see how much of a difference optics make to image quality. Now that both Olympus and Panasonic seem to be concentrating on better glass I think the system will really start to shine.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Revenues observations! SS / IS !
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:26 »
It seems that the internet loves one big company that dominates the sector.

This is a very convincing explanation, the most convincing I read so far. People need symbols.

Indeed... unfortunate but true.

Though there's also room for different players to dominate in segments of the market online. So for example the big fish in the US often won't be the same big fish as in Europe.

General - Stock Video / Re: Sell Your Footage
« on: September 12, 2011, 11:14 »
Hi Holgs,

thank you that you have read through our General Terms and Conditions / License Agreement (GTC) so thoroughly. We are at the beginning of the construction of our company, so we can always use good advice! For clarification, however, the following:

1. The contract may also be terminated by the clip-producer (see para. 10 of our GTC).
2. The transfer of rights is common in the industry. The rights are transferred, however, non-exclusive.
3. Deleting clips in the profile is not yet technically possible, but we're working on it.
4. Before we share the revenue, taxes and transaction costs are deducted (see para. 8 of our GTC). A sales through other distribution partners is not currently scheduled.
5. Our customers will use the material in their production and therefore all the footage-producers can not be named. But we are working now on naming the clip-producer while offering the footage.

We hope to have cleared up the misunderstandings. Please contact us if you have further questions.

Cheers
Thomas.

Actually I just re-read the German version of the contract - it makes a little bit more sense, unlike the English translation you have. If you're really keen on setting up this as a business, wouldn't it be a good idea to actually get these things sorted out before you invite participation from third parties (& pay someone who is actually qualified to translate your legal documents!)? As a contributor the current document still provides lots of loopholes that just don't provide protections for third party contributors.

The overall impression you give is of another under-funded start-up that hasn't really got its end sorted out, and doesn't really have the faintest idea about what is involved with running an agency.

Sorry but there's some pretty major problems with the terms of your license agreement.

Is there any reason why you don't allow contributors to cancel their licensing arrangements with you?

Quote
CLIP PRODUCER transfers to FOOTAGE ONLINE all the non-exclusive use and exploitation rights under copyright and neighboring right without content, time and geographical restrictions. The transfer of rights is to give third parties (customers) use and exploitation rights (license rights) to the MATERIAL.

(also in your FAQ: "Deleting clips in your profile is not possible.")

This clause is worded so that there is no right for contributors to remove content from your site, and basically gives you a blank cheque in terms of how you want to use the material.

Also: your "CLIP-PRODUCER earns 50% of net sales." is very different from earning 50% of the gross - so if you re-distribute through partners the commission will be substantially less.

Also:
CLIP PRODUCER expressly waives his right to be named.

Ie. you want anyone contributing to be completely anonymous.

In its current form I wouldn't touch your site with a 10-foot barge pole.

Great existing contributors get to subsidise the entry of new "student" competition. Just what we need.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: 'Edstock' now has over 15,000 files...
« on: September 07, 2011, 06:20 »
39261 files as of ten minutes ago.
And like I said over on the iStock forum, try a Best Match search on 'African Elephant'. (Unless I've got a weird geographic bias, there are 7 EdStock pics in the top 20. (Actually, that best match has changed a lot since last night, when 'ED' had even more).

Is there a big market for 'red carpet' images after the event? Usually if I see pics of celebs they are much more 'generic', unless the article is actually about the red carpet event. (But that's in general publications, I don't read celeb mags).

I only see flying "african elephants" near the top of that search... http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-17622466-an-african-safari.php?st=b6afe6a

And I see plenty of locations that are easy to get shots of sneaking in.

I also see plenty where no sneaking is needed - famous London landmarks, the street scenes in India and landmarks in Berlin (for example) are already well covered subjects, as are many of the locations they're flooding with what are in some cases quite awful looking images.

I'm pretty sure I have photos of this same squirrel - good to see Edstock didn't get a model release either: http://www.istockphoto.com/stock-photo-17622926-scenes-of-india.php?st=8c89378

General Stock Discussion / Re: August earnings
« on: September 02, 2011, 16:56 »
Overall $$ was slightly ahead of July, and about double Aug '10, but seeing as that was changeover month, the stat is still pretty meaningless. About 10% off my BME without factoring in PP and Getty earnings. I increased my portfolio by over 400 images this month so its not a great result, but maybe the effort will be rewarded in coming months.

That's the point. My August was worse than June and July but not much. However, it is worrisome that the new images have not boosted the overall income.

Lately I've noticed that it takes a little bit longer for images to become properly indexed and start getting sales. The search does however heavily favour older files which is a problem.

Well this and other threads are a little bit more encouraging than last month. Heres hoping that summer is finally over!

My stats are showed a really bad patch between the afternoon of the 17th to the 23rd - its almost like there was a 6 day weekend.

I´ll run my own test when they hit the store. I don´t think dpreview develops their RAW files with stock photography in mind.

The small Nex5 gives excellent files. I hope the new sensor is even better.

But we will see.

I think dpreview mostly just shoots jpgs unless its a test chart. Somehow they make even the best cameras look average in the sample images they put up.

Sorry, where are the "whining superstars"?  I don't see any really big players around here other than Sean, and he's not much into whining.

I like to whine, and I am one of the bigger selling independents on Istock, but my numbers are nowhere near 80/40/20k per month.  Much less "millions".

Out of curiosity, how unsuccessful, low-producing, lazy, or just plain untalented does one have to be to justify "whining" in your opinion?

1. Everywhere, in so many threads at MSG. Also at agency's forums, just read the threads about monthly earnings ;)

2. I never said I was talking about you, now you've just made it clear ;) .

3. I guess you missed what I wrote in parenthesis. Of course you can be rude to us, incompetent low earners. Like (you think) I was towards big sellers. Fair enough, I don't mind it at all ;)

I think its you being rude. You come to this forum anonymously, ask the questions that have been asked a million times, complain about the standard problems newbs complain about (oh no SS is rejecting my stuff - for example), don't listen to advice that's given because you already know it and then talk about some mysterious established contributors as "whining". At the same time its clear to al of those that have been here more than 5 minutes that you're someone who hasn't got a clue, doesn't have the sense to realise that and or to stop and think before you post.

Ever wondered why 19 people are ignoring you in the less than 12 months you've been here?
