In my similar case it was "logo" of green punkt (recycle symbol) - i really didn't know, that it is a logo, I thought that it is just a common symbol... And the first email from Shutterstock I didnt get either. Interesting -- a tineye search on that turns up 477 hits! Good seller I guess. c h e e r s fred 203
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 08, 2009, 06:27 »I also don't think that forum participation is factored into it as they would be rewarding people that are constantly in the forums complaining or asking questions. Appreciate both of your comments. Can you tell me if appealing reviews is of any use on DT? I am afraid that my poor acceptance rate in the past may have reviewers giving my stuff greater scrutiny - assume reviewers have this information - I've had some questionable rejections lately but I'm not sure how to appeal or if it is even worth it. c h e e r s fred 204
Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia changes to Exclusivity and other News« on: March 08, 2009, 02:22 »So far I am making 10% more, so FT is making 15% more (10% for the new prices and 5% for eating my already small share). What you can depend on is that in this economy most design shops will not increase their budgets for images to allow for FT's price increase. That means they must purchase fewer or cheaper images. The % decline will equal the % increase so if you want to figure out how you might do under the new prices don't look at your last 100 sales at the new rate, look at your last 100 - % price increase. (e.g. 100 - 10 for a 10% price increase). This will not be exact - too many other factors in play - but should give you a better idea of what to expect. fred 205
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 07, 2009, 04:47 »I like the $100 payout level. It isn't difficult to make that every month with DT. They payout quickly, unlike some of the sites with lower payout levels that have more to process every month. Well, I can't see your portfolio so I really don't know how your getting a monthly payout relates. If you have a small portfolio it would be an interesting fact. If you like the $100 level that is fine but DT could (like SS) allow contributors to set it lower if they wanted to be fair (and lose some of the income from zombie accounts and small ports). I have probably not had as many payouts as most here but I have had a few and never had any problem with any site once I reached their limit. I even managed to get paid from LuckyOliver once they lowered their payout to a reasonable level. fred 206
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 07, 2009, 02:17 »I agree, if I want to do better anywhere I need to get more images online. However, if it takes one site two or three times as long to deliver a payout as several of its competitors on a comparable portfolio, then something is wrong. I would suggest that DT has simply set their payout level too high. After doing this for three years I realize my portfolio is also neither particularly high quality nor particularly well suited to stock - but it works well enough for me elsewhere. I believe DT has factored the Acceptance Rate into the search algorithm and this could also be part of my problem. Perhaps other things are factored in that work against me - participation in their forum for example. I am certainly willing to listen to any explanations of the wide discrepancy on my sales there vice elsewhere. And my main point is not that DT is so bad or that FT is so good but just that the major sites all tend to be equal, each emphasizing different aspects of the business - i.e. sales, marketing, contributor relations etc. fred 207
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 06, 2009, 14:41 »Everyone's experience is different, and people are entitled to their own opinions. It's not a contest - you don't have to like one (DT) and complain about the other (FT) or visa versa. My favorite is the site that pays me most for my time. DreamsTime has failed pretty miserably in that department for me. I wouldn't want any newbies to think that because they can make a $100 payout at IS or SS in a few months with 100 images that they can do the same at DT. DT is just not in the same league. Better to go with FT and other sites with lower payout limits until you build a portfolio of 500 or so unless you like waiting a long time for your money. 208
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 06, 2009, 13:05 »Wow - how can you even begin to analyze micro stock companies results with a portfolio of on 142 images - and I would guess those 142 images haven't been available online for long either...? I have a lot of problems with DT. Mostly I am not happy with my sales there. ... Hey, I just got fed up with everybody else whining about FT and thought I would whine about DT for a change. They are NOT god's (or whoever's) gift to MicroStrock you know! c h e e r s fred 209
Dreamstime.com / Re: Dreamstime - Is it time to leave« on: March 06, 2009, 09:33 »
I have a lot of problems with DT. Mostly I am not happy with my sales there. I could blame my small (142) portfolio but my smaller(121/118)) FT/IS ports have outperformed DT for a long time and other sites (StockXpert, SS) do much better on a per image basis with larger ports. Even 123Rf beat them last month!
I would like to have a larger portfolio but their review system is very slow and I still have not figured out what they want. It took me awhile to realize that acceptatnce percentage was very important so over the last 8 months or so I have only submitted images that are accepted at multiple other sites. This has brought me up to 60% but it makes it difficult to build a substantial portfolio - and I guess uploading in dribs and drabs may be holding down my sales. Others complain about FTs commission drop but I would rather be with them and make some money than with DT and - to date - not make anything. At FT I not only make more I can take it out at $50 with DT I still have not reached their $100 payout limit. I hope you all realize that this high payout level is money in DT's pocket. Many contributors (I seen estimates as high as 80%) never reach payout and others like me have too small a portfolio to reach payout very often so they get free use of the money I make. FT's commission drops are a much more honest way to make money than DT's high payout limit. The only site I know of with a $100 limit is IS and they get the traffic to justify it. DT really doesn't. fred 210

Adobe Stock / Extended License Price Reset« on: March 04, 2009, 04:20 »I just made Bronze on FT and need to reset my Extended (Enhanced?) License prices. Always hated the 20 credit low price I was forced to charge - would prefer even higher but 50 will have to do for now. Do I have to do this one at a time or can I do some kind of bulk edit to change them all at once? Any assistance appreciate. General Photography Discussion / Re: 70-300mm VR lens for Nikon« on: February 26, 2009, 12:50 »I suppose you mean the Nikkor 18-200mm VR. It is a good walking around lens but you need to stop down to f/11 to get sharp images at 200mm (see review here --> http://www.naturfotograf.com/lens_zoom_02.html#AFS18-200VR ) I have had mine for 2 years and am pretty happy with it when I need the wide range (i.e. don't know what I will end up shooting.) It has bad creeping problem when shooting vertical and that is irritating. I'm saving up for a 28-70mm or 18-55mm f/2.8 to replace it. In any case I don't think it would work well as a substitute for a 70-300mm. fred 213

General Stock Discussion / Re: Reviews and Subs« on: February 23, 2009, 01:06 »
Yeah, my rejections are up again at DT too - and I have seen the overabundance a couple of times. Most places your acceptance percentage is not so important but DT factors it into their search algorythm so I finally get to 60% with great care in uploading over the last few months and they blow me out of the water with a 33% last month! Oh Well, I think reviewers take a quick look at an image and decide - if they like it they push it on through and if they don't they just look for a reason to reject it.

Dreamstime.com / Re: Verification Code !!!« on: February 23, 2009, 00:55 »What's with having to enter a verification code on uploading files at Dreamstime now? Real problem is it is required for resubmittals also apparently but you never get an opportunity to put it in so when you try to resubmit if errors out. (Of course it has to waste your time by waiting till the image has downloaded before it tells you you need a verification code!) I sent a note to support yesterday but they don't work over there on the weekends as far as I can tell. c h e e r s fred 216
Shutterstock.com / Re: Shutterstock on Demand« on: February 19, 2009, 04:43 »
Hmmmmmmmm... First month in a long time for no OD on SS and I haven't had an EL since May of last year! Normal dls up from last couple of months though. DT has plummeted from last month falling about 90% so far. FT holding and StockXpert and 123 RF only bright spots for me so far.
Such is MS. c h e e r s fred 217
Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia changes to Exclusivity and other News« on: February 19, 2009, 01:47 »Can you dispute this math for a silver photographer?... Frankly I don't have much of a problem with the changes. However, I don't see anyone doing the math right on the price and commissions changes. The law of supply and demand is pretty iron clad in competitive markets and Microstock is a near perfect competitive market (i.e. easy entry, many sellers, many buyers, etc.) That being the case the 20% rise in the price of images will result in a 20% decline in demand for images and total revenue from the sale of images will remain the same. The important change for contributors is that the lowered commission means that a smaller proportion of the total revenue will be going to the contributors. Total demand - the number of images needed in the market - will continue to increase and revenues will increase with that demand but the price increase will mean that Fotolia sales will not increase as fast as the demand for images increases. Increases in the supply of images constrains the ability of MS sites to increase prices without losing market share. FT can make up for some of this with marketing but in the end I think contributors will be lucky to break even with the changes. fred 218
StockXpert.com / Re: StockXpert: Future or History - Poll -« on: February 18, 2009, 00:57 »I have only been there since September and have only 217 images but they have quickly become my best site. I hope they keep going the way they are I certainly have no complaints. c h e e r s fred 219
Cameras / Lenses / Re: Lens Choice« on: February 10, 2009, 00:40 »Standard recommendation I have seen is that VR should be turned off if a tripod is used. This is in the instructions with the Nikkor VR lens - 200 - 400mm may be an exception - but no reason given. Thoughts are that it introduces a slight blur and/or shifts image slightly trying to compensate. fred 220
StockXpert.com / Re: Revenue plummeting at StockXpert« on: February 09, 2009, 12:47 »Here is a link http://www.microstockgroup.com/index.php?topic=3785.0 to the same subject from about a 10 months ago. I thought I would bring my stats up to date, the figures don't make for good reading, unless, of course, you love subscription sales: Not a very good statistical period to use for getting at the reasons for your 30% income drop. I have dropped over 50% on both SS and IS over the same period - with a more than doubled portfolio. I don't think I can blame the SS move to On Demand Dls, or the IS best match machinations for all of that drop. More likely the surge in image databases plus the economic slump accounts for most of it. Your experience at StockXpert is probably similarly affected. fred 221

Found the below on the iStock forums -- should have looked there first!
Quote Posted Fri Jan 23 8:34AM ...A recent development or two will mean a couple of changes in iStock-Apps.com. Going forward, the Compare, Suggestinator, StatBox, and other assorted istock-apps will be migrated to a new home at apps.myersonphoto.com. I'll try to minimize the downtime during migration, but if you see some wonky behavior in the coming few days, I hope you'll forgive me. The other change - unrelated to the migration, but occurring at the same time - will be that now I'll have a little more time and bandwidth to devote to creating, maintaining, upgrading and supporting the apps. So all those requests that came in over the past 12 months or so for istock-apps enhancements may actually see the light of day. Unquote c h e e r s fred 223

Look around and make a note of who gets Editor's Choice,etc... Friends, partners,etc... do get the white glove EVERYWHERE. I just call 'em as I see 'em guy. Cheating doesn't impress me even if everyone does it. If you don't like the way Editor's choices, etc. are done complain about them but don't get on my case for pointing out the flaws in a site. c h e e r s fred |
