Don't know what I was thinking, of course you are right. Throwing in a (tungsten?) bulb would be like adding a gel to an area I guess, wouldn't it? Digital Photography is like a new emulsion of film. Nothing else changed except the Polaroids are a lot faster, that and the cost of not buying and processing film. Good light is still good light. You can PS things to help your mistakes but if you can shoot straight files you will save tons of time on your post end. And your files look better to. Yes, good light is good ligbt but the dynamic range I'm getting with digital is pretty bad (if DR is the correct terminoligy). Just one example: I run into a lot of trouble with fair people who dress in dark clothes. If I get the details in their clothing their faces or hair is lost. Wish there was a 4 stop range, but it seems like there's barely 2 in digital. I'm hoping to get a full-frame body this fall. Maybe some wonder sensor will be here by then. I'm using a D-200 which is now 2 years old and is likely considered ancient by now - has the range improved at all on the new Nikons?

Hey RT, do you use your hotlight with your strobes or is the colour difference too huge? I have some of those cheap Chinese ones you mentioned and they are yellow yellow yellow and haven't been used in likely 2 years.
I read in some *old* course material that most product photographers use hotlights. Do they still use them now that they have gone digital?

Am I the only one wondering what fun Miz would have had with this thread?

Boy, it's a slow start to the year, but as bad as it is, I'm a few $ higher than last year at this time. After that lousy first week, Jan 08 was my BME thanks to quite a few EL's. Would sure be nice if that happened again this year!

I've made some t-shirts through Spreadshirt so I'm on their mailing list. They are having a 3-colour valentine design contest with crowdspring. If you win, it's $500 but be warned that you give away the rights. If you don't win you still own the rights. I copied and pasted the email below but the links didn't come through so I pasted the link immediately below: http://www.crowdspring.com/projects/graphic_design/clothing/spreadshirt_wants_your_design_help/details?utm_source=spreadshirt&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=valentinesAny designers might want to look into the crowdspring site - I've spent less than a minute there so I can't tell you much - but at first glance it looks like another Pixish. The e-mail from Spreadshirt: We are giving away 2 $500 prizes for the best Valentine's Day designs Betcha you could use $500 right about now. Well, here is good news! Spreadshirt is partnering with crowdSPRING.com, an online design community, in sponsoring a Valentines Day Design contest. There are two $500 prizes up for grabs and you could have one of them. Here is what you need to do: Go to crowdSPRING.com to find out more about the contest Create Valentines Day themed vector designs Upload your design ideas to your account on crowdSPRING.com The deadline for submissions is January 15th, 2009. If youre selected as a winner, Spreadshirt will purchase your design for $500. If youre not a winner, you can still upload your design to your shop or marketplace and make a hefty buck on the commissions. So what are you waiting for? Click here to GET STARTED.

I saw your reply (now a day later) and went to check today's rank... I've climbed from 1560 to 1390 with no sales today.

Madelaide.... my 7 day rank is 1560. Are we tied or is the system not entirely accurate?

I agree with Freezing, those grey Canon lenses are sexy. The other point about sharing with a friend is a very valid one. My friend went shopping with a Canon guy so she bought a Canon. She is often with me and has no lenses or flashes. I have a few lenses on my shelf she could have had. Yes, Lisa - the creative lighting system that Nikon offers is amazing. Get a speedlight or two and you have a portible studio. (Note... the SB-600's are great and cheap but if you grow into using PocketWizards it has no synch. They cost more but I'd say go SB-800 while they are still available or the new SB-900.) Whatever your brand though, make good lens choices. If you get the best lens you can afford you may use it for a decade or perhaps a lifetime. I've said it on another post recently, I would urge you to look for full-frame lenses even if your new camera has a digital crop sensor. Most of my lenses are fine, but my everyday lens is DX and I will have to replace it as well when I get my next body. The fact that I will have to replace a $1500 lens when I buy a full frame sensor makes a new camera purchase extra painful.

The site I'm really disappointed with is 123RF, for the first time in well over a year I didn't make payout last month and have noticed a steady decline recently, I also submit to the parent company Inmagine and having spoken to some others who also submit there we've all reported a lack of sales. Will they be the next to go or be bought out - wouldn't surprise me.
My thoughts as well. I made almost as much at Zymmetrical since August as I did at 123 last year. December was my WME at 123.

Although the year ended with a bit of a whimper, I am okay with 2008. You get out-of-it what you put-into-it and I had little time for stock - so I am very happy that my 07 photos kept selling along with my few 08 photos, combined with raises around the sites I made about 50% more. It's still not much, but I should be very pleased with the results considering my port growth was terrible. Paid the property taxes and a new roof on the house though.

Well, that's not exactly true. I don't know what country he is in, but he likely has at least 3 years to turn a profit and why not start it right?
If you register a "photography" business it can have many benefits. For example, in my first year I spent more than I earned due to my start-up costs but I was registered to collect PST and GST. That means, I got most of my GST back on gear, computer, software, gasoline, trade publications etc.
You can declare your office and any working space, electricity, cable, trade publications, gas, mileage and write the appropriate % off against your taxes. Is this possible in your country without a registered business?
On the other hand, I've met a lot of newbies on this board who start off full of fire and give up after a month or two. Your business license may cost more than you ultimately earn.

Thanks for the link Adelaide. It seems like a different war than the black & white one we are used to seeing doesn't it?
I've been seeing a lot of photos from the current wars and they are a totally different story. My nephew was back from Afghanistan on Canadian Thanksgiving and by the photographs it is really something else, and will be a war that is also remembered by its earthen/adobe? colour.
He finally told his mom over Christmas that their vehicle was blasted by a rocket but by some miracle they all survived. Not like the 4 Canadian kids that died on the road over these holidays. Stupid kid wants to go back in 2010. Good money he says. (You just have to live with the nightmares for the rest of your life if you make it back alive.)

You didn't provide enough information to answer your specific question about lenses, but I do have big reservations about anyone investing in DX lenses right now. I believe that you will outgrow the D90 in a couple years and by then full frame sensors will be the norm. I believe that most DX lenses work on full frame cameras, but the size of the image will be seriously reduced. (I don't recall the exact math - but something like a 20mp sensor will produce a 5.1 mp image if a DX lens is used on the new Nikons)

DT all the way. For me this year they have made only 60% of what SS has earned, but they are far more consistent with everything: sales, reviews, customer service. They seem to constantly make improvements, enter new partnerships and I really like their price structures.

If the parent is signing on behalf of a minor their signature will have to be witnessed by a third party.
If you mean that one parent signed and another witnessed, I don't think that a legitimate reason for the MR to be refused. Just because the last name is the same does not even mean the witness is a parent.

Seasons Best to everyone! I shot my last ringette team night and now I can start feeling the spirit! I hope everyone's familes are well and you have an inspiring new year. Don't forget to make some pleasant holiday memories! From Winnipeg, Manitoba in Canada, Merry Christmas everyone. -42 degrees celsius with the wind chill. My car almost didn't start this morning. It sucks. But Christmas time is AWESOME!!
Dragon_fang. Hi from Winnipeg too. I clicked through to your DT port and it looks like you are in Teulon. I'm making some business cards for some folks out there right now. Maybe in a few months when it's warmer we can hook up and go on some kind of a photo walk (hehe and maybe you can teach me a thing or two!). PM me sometime.

November/December is my busy season, and I had scheduled to do computer maintenance on the week of 21st including a new hard drive. Of course things never go as you plan. I finished processing some hockey teams and a group of 70 school kids on a Wednesday and on the Thursday morning I couldn't load Windows. My hard drive was completely stuffed. I'm always moving files to an external drive but it has been such a busy season everything is behind. The good news is that the only data I seemd to lose was some fonts and my list of RSS feeds, and now the 'puter is performing very nice.
I placed myself on a strict exile from the Internet while I was getting caught up and now that I am almost back to norm and I'm looking at things.
(a) Has something happened to the search at Istock, I've passed November earnings (but that isn't a great accomplishment) (b) Have we entered holiday season? Things seem a little slow.

LOL, I wasn't trying to make you feel bad.... I'm pretty sure I used the BS words above and the forum automatically switched it to crap. So, MY bad! Not to mention my 7 year old said the f word today. I gave him his get out of "tobasco on the tongue" free this time card so hopefully he won't say that again until he's 18. My Bad Pixart,
That was my choice of words. I must be careful not to put crap in other peoples mouths I apologize you are far more eloquent than I. Have a great day.
Best, AVAVA

By something stupid I mean like take away our referral earnings.
Oh wait, they already did that without announcing it to us.

I haven't been able to follow the forum this week but today I can stop by and the first thing I see is this business with Fotolia.
This is crap. What are we going to do about it? Are they not in breech of contract or do they have one of those convient clauses that says they can do that whenever they feel like? What is the governing country, or what country is the parent company in? United we stand. We have to do something before they do something even more stupid.
We "let" them give away our photos as subs. If we let them do this, what will they do next?
