Dreamstime.com / Re: Customer refund?
« on: October 03, 2008, 18:23 »
If you bought from IS, you can zoom in 100% before you purchase, so there shouldn't be any reason to refund other than duplicate download.

You are right, but the one I should have returned was from DT.  Maybe DT needs to implement a zoom feature now that they have so many returns they put the cost on the photographer.

Have'nt they stopped giving bonus for referred photographers?  Someone told me they signed up under me a couple weeks back and he's had sales already, but I have no new affilates.  From what I can tell they are only giving bonus on sales now.  Am I wrong?

Area posted as I was writing this.  Hm... pull my links?

I should have returned one shot to DT that had so much NR it was unuseable to me, but for the small amount of $ it didn't seem worth the effort.  Now that prices are higher than a couple years ago I bet we see more and more returns, I know this is a DT thread, but on Istock to buy a single large photo it is a little over $10 (I'd have to look up DT).  I would definitely return a single purchase for that amount if I felt it was too different from the thumb.

One of my photos arrived in my mailbox on a garbage calendar ;) - a shot of Toronto skyline.

Oh man I miss Toronto.  I bartended part-time for 10 years in that big blue dot by the tower.

General Stock Discussion / Re: your most laughable rejection

One of my best selling images across the board.
Rejected at Dreamstime initially, reason: "Please be more imaginative" :0P

Please be more imaginative... gosh that's insulting.  More white space would make it more attractive but then they give you refusals for making the canvas larger than the camera dimensions....

Flemish is back!  Good stuff, I was worried that we lost you to a typhoon or a mudslide.  Aren't you in one of those coastal countries that has had some brutal natural weather that we see on CNN?  I hope you've been on a great adventure since we last saw you.

It's a good time to be accepted because they seem a little more relaxed about approvals of late.  (Could this have anything to do with Photos.com and JIU?)

Just don't bother sending any interior shots, or shots with buildings in them without a property release.

I understand Yuri has a conversion rate of around 10%, so 3000 RAW files should give about 300 select images ready for distribution.

10% seems more realistic.  He did say 50-100 though on this video though.

Yes, wouldn't it be career killing to take 3000 RAW shots that all have exposure problems?  And you are right, the "streamlining" of stock, but mainly my regular job is something that I struggle with on a daily basis.  Things today change so frequently, it seems as soon as I've mastered some learning curve there will be something new to learn, or some sript that needs to be written before I can take the next step...

CofkoCof,  I don't doubt Arcurs has a car at least as nice as his Hassy.

P.S. you can be my friend too :)

I am so fascinated with the difference in Yuri's business model to most of the rest of us (hehe, other than the small fact that I am no more than a serious hobbyist at this and he is a dedicated pro ;).)

3000 raw files = 50-100 shots.
1 day prep
8 hours shooting, styling, travel
4 models
Yuri plus 2+ crew, stylist
purchased wardrobe and props

Add the hours (days) in post production and, wow, that's an expensive shoot to most of us.  Even though his work is exceptional, his break even point must be way down the line, especially if he only averages 10 shots per hour.  I'm not downplaying Yuri's success in any way, but everyone thinks Yuri had another 100,000 downloads today... , salaries and expenses must chew quite a bit of that away.  If he is not working in a profit pool arrangement , his most successful years are ahead once his most recent shoots are 100% profit.

Lessons learned:
Takes money to make money?
Takes careful planning and long days.
If everyone in Denmark is this beautiful, location is definitely an advantage.

Dreamstime.com / Re: No Moneybookers on DT
« on: October 01, 2008, 10:05 »
In case you don't follow Crestock threads, Josh left a very detailed message about Moneybookers and I thought it would be good to note here in the Dreamstime thread as they have surely been affected by the same type of delays:

Khwi

I've talked to my collegue Lars, the guy in charge for payouts. Here's what he had to say about the Moneybookers issue:

Quote
Moneybookers is extremely strict in their security rules as well as money laundering rules, which affects us by making the upload of funds to our payout a very cumbersome, and sometimes unpredictable process. The basic problem is that Moneybookers has imposed a limit on how much money we are allowed to upload to our account per month, which means we can't just upload a big lump sum once a year and do our payouts from that. Due to various security measures, both on part of Moneybookers and the credit card we use to fund the account, this is a very tricky manouver to coordinate (several people must be involved).

In addition to this, Moneybookers seems to like slapping new requirements on us every now and then. The latest here is that they suddently decided to block the function for sending money from our account until we send them a hole slew of documentation about the company, presumably another part of their money laundering protection. So, simply put, while we gather the required documentation for submission and approval by Moneybookers, we are blocked from sending money through from our account. While I'm hopefull we'll be able to finish this whole process in not too many days, I can't give you any guarantees on when exactly the pending payouts will be processed, the only guarantee I can give you right now is that you will get your money.

I'm terribly sorry about all of this, I hate not being able to process these payouts immediatly. I'm trying to find ways to make the Moneybookers process more streamlined, so hopefully, this might become a more expedient process in the future.

Lastly, let me make this clear: The cause for the delays in Moneybookers payouts is not in any way due to a lack of money on our part. Anyone who get their payouts by PayPal will confirm that our payouts are processed quickly an regularly. From what I hear, we take care of our payouts more frequently than our competitors do.

Best regards

Lars

Hope Lars' explanation answers your question and thanks again for getting in contact with us about this.

I put my Alamy RF earnings. I don't care if it calls macro, micro or mid stock. Money is money and royaltyfree sales can be compared.

IS       42% BME
Alamy 25 %
SS     11%
FT      9%
DT      7%
StockXpert    2%    (opted all out)
123    1.8%  (stoped upload here august, if nothing change in december I'll delete my portfolio)
BT      1.5%  WME (I stop upload here right now and wait and see)
Snap   0%     (only 5% of my portfolio is here)
FP      0% (I'm asking myself what I'm doing here, maybe it's  Elena ;))

I appreciate it Rene as (if I ever have time to shoot personal stuff again) I plan to build a port at Alamay.  Can you tell us if Alamay shows up on your balance sheet every month at a somewhat consistent rate, or is Alamay less predictable?

2213

Just wondering why my sales today are worse than ever.  Was wondering if there is a U.S. holiday today (Monday), but maybe it has something to do with the markets?

I just sent a screenprint to the official Peanuts webpage per the last question on their faqs page.

Q. As a Peanuts fan, I often come across content on the internet that uses the Peanuts copyrights and trademarks in an unfavorable fashion, and I don't think it is authorized by United Media. What actions does United Media take to protect the work of Charles Schulz and the Peanuts property?

A. Read in over 2400 newspapers in 75 countries and 25 languages, Peanuts is truly a global presence. As you can imagine, United Media must fight copyright infringements on an on-going basis in almost every territory worldwide; a constant challenge, and an issue we take very seriously. United Media's legal team, assisted by vigilant Peanuts fans around the globe, is constantly learning of and reviewing various unauthorized content and, within the bounds of the copyright law, takes action where appropriate.

Not speaking about just Fotolia, but it's not a bad idea to keep a folder of similars and when the originals start to lose momentum, push through a fresh batch.  I remember Sy posting that once during a slow period she went through old folders and came up with many new submissions and was rewarded with sales.

September is the first month that my subs have outstripped regular sales 3-1.  But, I must also state that my port there is small and overall number of DL's is very insignificant.  I'd be interested to see the ratio for those with a larger sample.

Funny, this is my Best Month Ever at BigStock with $42 so far (with only 341 images online)
Maybe I have gotten your sales? :D

Second best month was last month (august) and third best february 2008.

You've trademarked Best Month Ever?  Shall I stop using it now?  Will I never have another one again? :D

Dreamstime.com / DT: Extra Large, Alternative?
« on: September 26, 2008, 15:09 »
I had a sale of $4.63 of 12 credits for an "extralarge, alternative" sale at DT.

This is a level iv image that requires only 11 credits for xl.

Nice to see that $ amount (that's worth 13 subs!), but I'm not sure what alternative is or why it was 12 credits rather than 11.

Anyone know?

2224
Looking forward to it!
