The thing to remember is that sometimes a custom license can offer fewer rights than the broad, perpetual royalty free license does.

Clearly giving away more rights for less money is bad for contributors. But if they are doing what they said - which is crafting custom licenses for large customers - then it could be reasonable to see smaller amounts.

I have had some small LELs in the past. From their answer to one of my support tickets over an 18 cent royalty for an LEL, they said "The download is from a free trial package we offered to a special client under promotional usage. The package work like a subscription but the scope of usage is very limited. That is why the download is inserted under Limited License column."

Today I had an LEL for $5.333, so they are still doing other types of rights bundles, not just promotions.

In 2013, on another support ticket reply about an LEL amount, they said "We will certainly have the website to show the amount of credits for all LEL downloads soon." That clearly hasn't happened and it would be much better if they improved reporting to include that. We don't need to see the full license, but some description of what rights were granted and for how many credits seems very reasonable to me.

I did a test search (picked a term where I know a set of my images show up on DT) and the results were 8,713 on Megapixl versus 14,265 on DT - so slightly more than half

I am opted out of DT's partner program - and this doesn't seem like a partner site to me as it's DT's own company - so possibly that's why none of my images appear to be there.

On DT, with 200 images per page, I have 11 on the first page sorted by most relevant, 6 sorted by Best Selling and 5 by Most Downloaded. In other words, it's not that I have no popular content. So what is the basis for selecting whose work gets on this new site?

The pricing page says that 750 images a month will be $219

https://www.megapixl.com/subscription-plans

Shutterstock is $249 if you just buy one month ($199/month annual plan). Why would you go for many fewer images on Megapixl? Is SS search really so awful and Megapixl's so much better?

I really don't get it (or why they didn't send something out to contributors about this)

As the licenses vary, so do the prices and royalties to us. Only support can tell you what the buyer received for that particular license fee

First: you don't have to use Alamy's property release. Second: all contracts need consideration to be valid but it doesn't have to be money or have a cash value

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy Sales Earnings Gross?
« on: April 09, 2016, 19:07 »
You would think that there would be something simpler for contributors to view their earnings, but I don't know of anything either.

I'd like to see my earnings on each sale with a mark showing if the amount is cleared or not and the date on which the money was earned. Total that by month/year/date range.

Having additional reports with the total amount of the sale, royalty rate, distributor mega rate (if you are still opted in to that) with a running balance is fine as an additional report - with the download date as well as the sale date and cleared balance date if they'd like to be truly transparent.

Not sure why I got the e-mail - I don't buy there (I had someone I did work for buy from them but I just did the searching). It was the e-mail associated with my contributor account and it said I had signed up for newsletters (which I think I did)

I don't expect it to go anywhere but it smells of desperation - $999 on sale for $49...

2207
I received e-mail this morning from 123rf and StockUnlimited (Tagged as "An Inmagine Company" even though they both are) titled "Creative needs sorted - for life!"

They have a deal - this week only - for unlimited downloads for life! Only $49 (reduced from $999)

I think they've been saying they have 600K images and vectors for ages, so I'm not sure about this "... we add thousands of new
images every week"

"You'll enjoy full access to over 600,000 quality stock photos,
vectors, clipart and other images... And we add thousands of new
images every week.

Don't worry about your content needs ever again! Just make this
one-time purchase now to enjoy unlimited downloads
for life. No catch"

But you have to hurry :) This is limited to the first 1,000 subscribers!

It's carnival barker yelling at its worst IMO

2208
I contacted them at the end of March and still haven't heard back. They used to be good - a couple of days - but I suspect all contributor costs are being minimized and thus I expect very little, very late :)

2209
Got e-mail this morning asking if I'd like to re-enable my store on Marketplace as a customer wanted to license an image. I replied that if the royalty cut to 30% had gone into effect today as planned, then no, I wouldn't. I haven't heard anything more :)

I use the shortcuts all the time, but I've moved all the tools over to the second screen (on the right). I use a tablet & stylus and am right handed, so it just seems natural to me to have all the gubbins on the right (layers, channels, history, actions, tools, etc.)

Funny that I can't find his stuff on Shutterstock, but he does have a portfolio on Alamy with lots of the same vectors (plus some photos)

Shutterstock.com / Re: Image spam?
« on: April 01, 2016, 22:12 »
SS is clearly reaching out to image factories and offering to upload all their images for them. (I've noticed a new trend at SS: When I do have images that catch on, they sell well for about a week and then suddenly stop. When I search for them, I see that my images and those of popular "older" contributors have been pushed off the front page by a flood of simple icon-like vectors from contributors who joined in 2015.)

I don't think this one has been mentioned before - over 34,000 near duplicates

http://www.shutterstock.com/portfolio/search.mhtml?gallery_id=2223479&page=1&safesearch=1&sort_method=newest

SS is now at 81,122,094 total - what metric for which investor is driving this bizarre pollution?

2213
...DP hasn`t shown its nasty face yet. They even paid for uploads.

Are you referring to Deposit Photos or was that a typo? Deposit Photos has an abysmal track record of saying one thing and doing another. The Shotshop mess being a prime example, but the various schemes that offer people preferential search placement if they upload their portfolio (which is inherently a scam as they keep offering it and you can't have a preference for all the contributors you sell that line to) and cutting royalty rates while they raised prices.

That face looks pretty nasty to me

Alamy.com / Re: Responsibility for setting incorrect licence
« on: March 30, 2016, 09:45 »
...Just drop us an email at [email protected] or PM me the image refs here and I'll take care of it....

Alamy support is excellent. They are polite, helpful and prompt - you couldn't ask for more. I recently wrote to ask if they could cancel the deletion of images I had scheduled late last year (when I was thinking of making some images exclusive to 500px, before KK Thompson nuked that notion). I couldn't see where to do that from the contributor interface.

They wrote back that it would have to be done their end and shortly afterward that it had been done. I wish it weren't so exceptional to have great contributor support, but kudos to Alamy for theirs!

General Stock Discussion / Re: 123RF MISC 1099 are incorrect
« on: March 29, 2016, 19:13 »
I replied in the other thread on this. Support emailed me back to say that the 1099 is for July through December 2015, not the whole year. And in addition to the shorter period, even for that period the amount was wrong.

I already filed my return based on the correct amount of earnings. As this erroneous form is less, it won't cause a problem for you

2216
Support tells me that these adjustments are for very old transactions - from 2010 and 2013 was what they said. They confirmed that the sales occurred when the files were active

Your Mileage May Vary (and your brain might wonder how this comes to light in 2016 and why there was no text explaining this in the e-mail and probably some uncharitable thoughts about their competence)

2217
jo ann, your photos will be there, only your first 25 will be displayed and for sale to a buyer. check what you see when you log out and look at your portfolio

I checked just now, and not logged in I can see images in search and then when I select one and then click on my name, all the images are displayed. I haven't tried to buy anything, so possibly I wouldn't be able to.

I'm guessing they've fallen behind on the updates that would remove items from search and that it will happen at some point.

New Sites - General / Re: superimagemarket
« on: March 29, 2016, 11:03 »
You can search some previous threads here to see concerns about this site - in particular that they charge a storage fee (there's some amount of free space but over that you pay by the gigabyte).

http://www.superimagemarket.com/About.aspx?content=7

I wouldn't dream of paying storage fees to a site with no know sales track record (do a few searches and you'll see how thin their content is).

I think someone would have raved about them here if something were happening with sales

2219
I'm a US citizen residing in the US. There should be no withholding at all (they've had my W9 since 2005 or whenever they first asked for it)

2220
...The only photo on sale does not have these numbers and note the word "recently".

You can look at your deactivated files and search for the file number which will show you which files they licensed. In addition to my deactivated file, a current exclusive who had a dozen or so files listed in Monday's e-mail checked to see if any where deactivated, and three were.

From the reply in Febuary 2015 to the October 2014 sales of deactivated items, customer service said the following:

"I have confirmed that license adjustments should not occur for files that had been deactivated and that we do audit content prior to these negotiations to ensure that the files are still active. It seems that we did not catch your deactivated file(s) on the audit we did and for that we apologize."

Their "audit" is apparently still broken.

I received e-mail from them today saying they had an updated 1099 for me in the tax center.

I'm a US citizen living in the US and so there was no 1042-2

However my name on the updated form was "J" - nothing else - and the amount was less than half the total earnings for 2015. Not to mention those forms are to be sent out by the end of January - my return is already filed.

As the amount is less vs. more it won't cause any problems, but as they are apparently unable to fill the form out correctly, it's a crapshoot as to what number ends up there.

I wrote to support telling them it was wrong and that they need to re-issue it with the correct name and amount.

Edited to add that support replied. They said that Withholding tax was implemented July 1st 2015 so the 1099 covers only July through Dec 2015. Although the number is still wrong (according to them; I didn't add it up). They say they've notified the relevant departments.

The idea that I've been earning from them the entire tax year and  yet they issue a 1099 for just part because of some internal bureaucracy of theirs seems wrong. But as it doesn't make any difference to my tax return, I'm not going to pursue it further.

2222
I wrote to support this afternoon as they made another license for me for a file deactivated in February 2013. For a princely royalty of 94 cents!!

This is even worse than last time (October 2014 which they finally "resolved" in February 2015, thanking me for my patience). In the previous case there were 3 extended licenses for files that had been licensed earlier.

This pitiful license has to be new.

I wrote to support and told them they had no authority to grant a license and they must revoke it. They can direct the customer to another agency for that file or have them license something else from Getty/iStock.

They promised this wouldn't occur again when we closed the last ticket. To have them do this three years after the file is no longer theirs to sell is disgraceful. I'll update here when I hear back from support...

2223
Not the greatest headline. What the photographer is doing is providing a list of his costs and asking buyers to pay what they think it's worth. People are paying him more than the cost apparently - and he mentioned some were paying more than he would have asked.

...Possibly won't rejoin FAA when my payment becomes due next Jan.

I didn't this January. I got some message that they'd remove all but the first 25 images, but it hasn't yet happened...
Gosh, last year my bank card had changed and I forgot, so it didn't 'collect', and my images all disappeared instantly.
Actually, I don't know how they got the money this year, as I checked and I don't have a direct debit or standing order. I'll need to block it with my bank if I'm leaving. I'll put a note in my diary!

It was good fortune that I was able to stop. A year ago I had tried to have them remove the credit card from my account so they could not auto-renew. Even with a long-ish conversation with support they said that wasn't possible (which is bollocks as I know it is).

However, the credit card expiration date was last year sometime so I never updated the data with FAA. I got a message saying that they'd been unable to charge my card and please update the info. I ignored that for a bit and when I finally clicked "Cancel" it told me the images would be removed. I'm sure they eventually will be, but so far they're still there.
