Am I the only one making money with Canstock? It's not the first time I hear this, and it does not compare to my experience with them. Anyone else make a decent income with them? It might simply be that my portfolio is vector where most if photo.

I have a lot of vector sales at 2.5$ and 5$ commission for me which do add up quickly, but I make at least a 200$ payout each month with them, where I do half that on Fotolia.

Am I the only happy camper of Canstock out there? :p

I'm with you. My results are pretty similar, but I'm vectors as well.

I have legs and a table has legs, therefore I am a table.  ;D

A little of both. Mostly I'd say people just use the shopping system. I usually encourage it too. I get custom requests as well that I do outside the cart.

I've never been overly impressed with the earnings at Zazzle. It makes money every month, but it's more of a fun thing to do/hobby than a real money earner.

Hi All,

Whatever the outcome I say plan for the worst and hope for the best so now is a time to think about the future of stock and how to stay three moves ahead of your opponent, the game goes on. Stay sharp and listen to your gut then do lots of investigating and think about tomorrow if you are serious about stock photography being your full time income.
Its been like this going way back and isn't about to stop, its a wild ride and some days I wonder what it would be like to just get a check and go home at the end of the day. These are definitely strange days but definitely not boring. This was written on the wall a couple of years ago if you are reading between the lines it was obvious the day they assimilate Istock,. Check out all their other collections that at one time were huge all on their own now just a portion under the Getty umbrella. Do not stand around and wait for changes to hit you smack between the eyes, that is always going to be to late.

Best,
Jonathan

Nice post. This made the most sense out of anything I've read in this thread. I'm probably interpreting (or misinterpreting) it with my own views in mind, but I still like it.

I'll never forget the day when I saw people in the Istock forums cheering that StockXpert was killed.
I wonder who's cheering now.

Well, I'm not cheering, but I am patting myself on the back and saying, "That'll do pig. That'll do".  ;D

JJRD's leaving!

I have to be honest. I really don't know who JJRD is. I guess I don't spend enough time in the IS forums.

As credit prices and image costs steadily increased at istock over the years, buyer volume has dropped. You used to be able to get just about any Large photo for around $10. Now those same images can cost $50. I think there is a pretty clear correlation between rising prices and buyer dissatisfaction.

I used to be a buyer at istock. I'd pick up small images on a whim for comp purposes because they were cheap and it was nice to put an unwatermarked image into a design comp. Now an XS E+ image can cost $9. No way I'm spending $9 on a comp image. Even at the large size, if I bought a Large photo for $10 and didn't use it, no big deal. If I spend $50 I'm sure as heck going to be bummed about not using it, and certainly more inclined to get a refund.

For $50 you can go to SS and get 5 images, any size. For buyers this seems like a no-brainer, and I think that istock's pricing has had a profound effect on the decline in earnings many people see and the overall decline in site traffic and buyer activity. Returning prices to a true microstock level is the only way to bring buyers back around.

That's kind of an apple to oranges comparison. My average image sells for about $18.50 at IS. That same image would cost $19 at SS to buy as a single image. It would cost $15-$38 at DT and would cost $10.4 at FT. That's not really a huge difference.

those waiting gleefully for their demise should be very careful what they wish for. the impact on prices and commission structures in microstock on the whole cwould be huge if something were to go down with iStock.

While I'm not gleefully awaiting the demise of any company, I don't think the impact of IS going under would be that huge. Sure it will hurt some contributors (greatly), but they'll most likely recover. Someone else will pick up the sales and I don't think prices or royalties will get worse as a result of IS failing. If anything it will be a cautionary tale for other companies.

I think contributors underestimate their own relevance in building these companies and microstock from nothing. IS and SS didn't build microstock. We did. They were just there to wisely capitalize on it.

You should care should one major agency collapse. It would have a huge impact in the industry, and it leaves contributors at the mercy of fewer major agencies. The best outcome would be a return to cultivating strong community relations with contributors.

Considering I no longer have files there, it would probably have a beneficial impact for me. To be honest though, all the big 4 sites are kind of parasites on the industry. They brought us falling royalties and overly cutthroat subscription plans. They all share the blame. I'd love to see those sales get spread out to smaller better paying sites.

"I have truly loved" ???? Do me a favour. It was supposed to be your agency and you should have maintained a business relationship with them. It was entirely because of all the ridiculous pom-pom waving that Istock thought it could get away with screwing all it's contributors and all it's customers.

I'd only have been sad if they had got away with it __ because all the other agencies would probably have followed them and we the contributors (including you) wouldn't have had a business anymore. Fortunately their greed has come back to bite them hard and I hope any other agency will take notice of Istock's downfall.

I get the emotional attachment too. I don't run my business like a robot.

As far as getting away with it and others following suit... didn't they? They paid 20% for how many years and were very successful at the low rate. Other companies like DT and FT lowered their royalties a couple times. They weren't really following IS though, since they did all that before the current rate drop.

..., or do I really have to give a reason in the box for every file?? This is certainly frustrating...

You really do have to give a reason - you can paste something into each one to save time.

It is frustrating, but several other sites are similarly painful if you want to deactivate images vs. close an account completely. I guess no site wants to optimize the experience for users removing content en masse :)

It takes time, but if you set up a decent system, it goes quick. Here's how I did mine.

I opened up the My Upload page. Sorted by downloads and went to the last page. Right clicked on all 20 files on the page. Then went through those 20 tabs I opened and deactivated the files. I pasted the same reason in every file. Then, went to the next page when the only tab I had left open was the My Upload page.

I hear what you're saying about wanting to get levels up.  But I think it goes back to the RPI question, and creating images that don't compete with each other.  If you have ten images of, say, an elephant on a balloon, and they're each selling OK and are at level 1 or 2, wouldn't you be better off with just a few images like that, so you're not dividing your sales and the few you have on that subject are level 4 or 5 instead?  I think trying to keep RPI high, or at least steady, is being proactive in meeting that goal... while doing something like deleting images after the fact is reactive.  You would have been much better off devoting time to ten different subjects rather than 10 elephants on balls to begin with.   Watching RPD just seems like a reactive, rather than proactive, strategy to me.

Makes sense, but I frequently sell all 10 elephants at once too.  ;D

2240
I just scratch my head when people debate RPD.  What does return per download tell you, except to give you something to get upset over and feel powerless to fix?

Funny. I've never put much stock in RPI. I track it, but it's not a big deal to me if it is falling. As long as my income is rising. I make a lot of images that compete with each other, so it is only natural that my RPI would dip as my library grows. I also like to experiment, so not every image is a great seller. But, it may lead to something else. Possibly even freelance work.

I track RPD too. I think it's nice to get a feel for what sells on a site and for what size and price. Also, to track raises and cuts in royalties or price. I've really been monitoring my RPD at DT because I'm trying to get my levels up. I've actually been wondering if I could make more by deleting images. It's a strange thought, but I'm not sure that it's an unrealistic one.

Every stat has a use, but it really depends on how you use it and/or what you are focusing on.

I know somebody posted a Wordpress store here they built off of an open source script/plugin, but I can't find it.

I did find a CMS Account store.

http://www.microstockgroup.com/selling-direct/here-is-my-personal-store!/

This might have been what I was thinking when I said Pixaria, but I might of read a thread about that too. I tell people I have a photocopy memory. It looks like the original, but it's a little blurry.  ;D

That or...

I remember everything. I'm just like an elephant... fat and smelly.  ;D

I think if you diable your files manually (i.e. one by one) you can leave your account open and request payout whenever you want (as long as you're over $100).

That is what I did. I still wanted to have my account open, so I deleted everything manually. I waited until I was over the payout amount though. I didn't have any partner program files, so I'm not sure how that is handled.

FYI. You'll lose your stats page when you delete your last file, so if you want or need to record any of that. You should do it before you delete your last files.

Dig into the code, particularly the functions.php and htaccess files. Eventually you need to change those underscores to dashes. Google can't read the underscores, so that "big_cat_leopard" will be interpreted as "bigcatleopard" which you don't want to rank for obviously. The dashes tell Google that each is a separate word to be parsed and evaluated.

It's a real PITA and honestly I never got it to work 100%. KTools is outdated, and not very search engine friendly. Their admins should be on their forum teaching customers how to fix this stuff, but instead they just make it a point to tell you that they don't do custom programming. I understand they don't have the time to customize people's websites, but there are serious flaws inherent in their software which should be addressed.

Yeah, there are some things that should definitely be improved or added, but I've been fairly happy with it. I guess I haven't given any of the other scripts a test run though, so it would be interesting to see if they were significantly better. I think someone on this forum built a site with Pixaria.

I thought this was an interesting article and video on dashes in Google:

Photoshop Discussion / Re: Photoshop alters upgrade policy
« on: January 13, 2012, 12:31 »
It's OK news. It still sounds like they are trying to force us to buy upgrades more often.

2247
Maybe they want most of the exclusives to go independent. That way they get to pay them less. It might explain them seemingly doing nothing to rebuild confidence or address legitimate concerns.

I thought they made more off of exclusives because the increase in prices is higher than the royalty increase for the same file.

2248
Speaking only for myself, I don't think of exclusives as pariahs...I just don't understand why anyone would choose to remain exclusive when so many bad things keep happening at IS.

I don't know. I wouldn't want to make that transition. It's not exactly friendly outside the gates at IS and you're basically asking people to start over when they give up exclusivity. I've said it a couple times that I think the best place to be if you're going to be on IS is as an exclusive.

2249
I never really understand how it was possible so many illustrations were sold, what were they used for, I rarely see any illustrations in advertising, newspapers etc.

I always assumed my cartoons were used to market cigarettes to young children, but I'm probably wrong.  ;D

2250
Mine is also the opposite way down from even last January.  I'm hoping for those of us who aren't seeing an increase will see one next week once the New Year has gotten over it's hangover.  My sales have been dreadful.

Yeah, it's been pretty sluggish for me too. Maybe, it's an illustration thing.  ;)
