that should be fine, unless one of the sites require exclusive RM images (I don't know about photoshelter or inmagine)

Photoshelter doesnt require exclusivity.

I can remember my first Shutterstock sale. It was just minutes after the upload. Talk about reinforcement! I couldn't wait to upload more. After a few weeks seeing the fast action I actually thought that their marketing planned that Shutterstock was purchasing newbie images AS A MARKETING TOOL. I don't think that anymore but I still think it would be an effective tool for them.

From what I could understand they simply "cheat" newbies up in popular searches. And I'm pretty sure they do it as a marketing tool to make newbies upload more.
It worked on me. See!
I still have to make per month as much as I did in the first 2 weeks I joined. I finally managed to do it, but they cheated on me. And they won. I can't stop uploading :)

It may discourage some starters, (and save them and the agencies the time) when they see that the average income is lower than some very active, hard working and successful people, make it appear.

That's a very good point. Stock for a new starter is everything but profitable. It's a time and resource sink. Return per hour "worked" is incredibly low and when you factor out costs it's stock is actually a pretty big loss. But... I find it an incredibly effective way to improve my skills: it gives motivation, goals, very objective measures of your improvement (acceptance ratios, earnings per month, RPM, RPI) when these values are tracked.

So, overall, it's been a great experience for me so far. I will never make it my profession, as I stated before, cause I love my real profession and I don't want to quit it, but it's a great way to use my spare time. I hope to keep it up.

just curious, what are the payout terms?  Do you have to have a certain amount a sales before the agency cuts you a check?  Or a certain amount of money made?  What are the typical commision on sales?  Sorry, I am new here!

Practically all agencies have a minimum payout that goes from 75/100$ for the most estabilished ones (DT, SS, IS) to 30/50$ for the newer ones.

Once you reach the minimum amount you can request a payment that will be credited on PayPal or equivalent. Or you can ask a cheque to be sent.
On SS the payment can't be requested, but it's automatic on the 15th of the month after the one you reached the payout. In my case, for example, i reached a payout in August and I will see the money on my PayPal account by the 15th of September.

In general there is no commission (but others can be more precise than me here, I yet have to receive the first one).

Hope it helps.

A good few probably go exclusive at IS before reaching payouts at other sites too ...

I wasn't one of them with my whooping 30 sales in 4 months at IS :D

Yes, you have to be exclusive, and no, you can't submit editorial to this collection.

You can always pursue that on your own by applying to Getty or Scoopt.

I love shooting Editorial (events, concerts, sport) and I applied to Scoopt. They are pretty selective, which is a good thing. I have a handful images online: they appeared in Getty editorial searches.

Congrats Fran!

But I'm not sure what you mean about the 70% !!

Do you mean not reaching it ever??

Yes, quitting before reaching the first payment. I read these statistics somewhere but I cant remember the exact number.

General Stock Discussion / 70% don't reach the first payout
« on: September 01, 2008, 13:06 »
I can't remember the exact percentage, but I'm not anymore among them.
I got my first payout email from Shutterstock today after three months. Dreamstime's payout on its way.
Thanks everyone for the amount of info I got from this forum: it's hard to explain how valuable this place has been for someone like me who picked up his first camera ever in february.
I already spent the money in a tripod. Thanks everyone again! :D

Ahaha very amusing read. Now I know what I don't have to shoot :D

BME for me.
0 :)
It was 0 the month before so I'm not complaining.

8GB is max supported by 64 bit Windows xp/vista. Above 8GB can operate only on Mac OS.

Vista can address up to 128gb of physical memory. Only Vista Home 64 is limited to 8gb (basic) or 16gb (premium) for commercial reasons.

239
I use Vista 64 on a non so incredibly fast PC and it works pretty ok. I also have some problems when returning from Hibernate, it pisses me off but what can I do?
For everything else is fine. It's slightly slower than Vista 32 (for various technical reasons too boring to explain), but you will unlikely notice the difference. Overall you can use more memory and that offsets the choice when working with images.

If you get Vista Ultimate, you'll have both 32 and 64 bit and you can try which one works for you. I wouldn't recomend installing Vista 32 anyway.

I haven't talked about this on a stock board up until now.  I will be using microstock earnings to go part time with my employer this coming winter.

Good luck with your plan! :)

Things can change however - over months or years and maybe microstock will not be viable in a year or 20, but that isn't a worry either.  You have photography skills and if you can change with the business things should be OK, if not well there is always some other type of job or go back to what you were doing.  It isn't any less secure than any other profession.

The key to solve this problem in other fields is to diversify. In my case, for example, learning photography is a way to diversify my skills in the game programming business: if for any reason in few years they stop making games, I can move to program finance software (yuck) and if, I ever get good at this, have another income from what is now a hobby. I'll never quit my job if I can, cause it was my dream since I was a kid, but it's good to learn something new.
In my opinion who wants to live off stock, should consider using his photographic skills to also earn from macro maybe and from contracts. Don't put all eggs in one basket just in case.

Good luck everyone.

Our policy is as Paul states, every reject gets an explanation, it's only fair.

It's also very useful for people like me who are just starting up. Thanks.

As a MS-oriented systems engineer starting from the 90s, and as a practical person in general, I can say that, if you never use the Windows search (as I do not), then disabling any service that checks up on your file system contents on a regular basis is a good thing. :)

Mate, I work at Microsoft as a Software Engineer. Trust me on this. I'm not even close to be a photographer, I'm just a programmer! :D
Even if you never use it, it practically makes no difference to the performance of the system due to the way it was designed. But that noise is annoying as hell!

If it's got Vista installed, be sure to disable the Search Indexing Service first thing - otherwise it'll be spinning your hard disks all the time, checking for things like if that old spreadsheet from 1992 has changed yet or not.  :)        This really hits you where it counts for disk-swapping based apps like Photoshop, especially if you haven't installed every last RAM chip from Taiwan.

Don't believe the (negative) hype. The indexing service runs only when there's no disk access and the PC is idleing: it's designed to not steal CPU cycles or HD bandwidth to running tasks. In less techie words it doesnt really matter if it's on when you are using  photoshop.

I'm totally frustrated at Fotolia, cause I just don't understand what it's reasonable to submit. I will stop uploading one day, promise, unless... wait, I got my first EL ever! :D
It's also my best earner everywhere and it's probably the image i dislike the most among the ones I've ever uploaded. Oh irony.

If you are in a crowded room and you accidentally "let one go", does it do any good to deep breath and try to catch it all yourself?  Does the act of breathing it in then expelling it lessen the impact at all?

No, what counts is the density and breathing it will have a minor impact to it. Our noise is a dam good chemical laboratory and can peek very tiny amount of particles in the air. The best bet is to say sorry :D

Mentoring and training is giving someone the ability to do something, perpetuating craft and and in doing is also a form of self validation and thus  a win win situation.  But after having taught the skills to give them your business plan, gained from hard earned experience is a lose lose scenario. You've set up someone to undercut your living and they aren't going to learn from the school of hard knocks nor will they be as likely to come across their own unique insight and alternative strategies.

Just different life philosophies I suppose.

No, I see your point. The distinction you are making is important, I was probably talking about mentoring and training more than giving away a business plan. I wouldn't probably say anything about the market a videogame I'm working on is targeting, but I would surely talk about some of the details involved in creating a 3d engine for a videogame.

And you write these books for free?

Only chapters, never an entire book, but yes, I do it for free, never seen a penny and never asked for any. For me it's a way to thank the people who helped me when I started, and I really believe in sharing information.
But, mind you, it's my personal view and I don't pretend everyone to see this from my point of view, more so here that I'm on the taking side rather than the giving one.

Exactly.  We're not doing wedding photos 1000 miles from each other.  We're all in direct competition.

I don't agree. Not about the competition, which is obvious, but about the need for threads like this: i believe that sharing information as much as possible is beneficial for everyone in the long run.

For example I could keep my "secrets" to myself when it comes to my job, but I like to write on books and talk at conferences about what I'm doing, because that's where I learnt the most in the past.
