The company, the largest stock photo site on the web,

Is that true???

Beside that, in my opinion, this is a valid reason to cancel a contract.

Software - General / Re: When you transfer ...
« on: February 25, 2008, 18:23 »

They're designed to have cards taken in and out several times a day.  I've never met anyone that's ever bent a pin in the reader.  Unless you're mashing the cards in back to front or upside down, they're such a tight fit into the slot I think you'd have a hard job not lining the pins up.

Besides, my card won't fit in any other way to my camera, due to the cut out bit on one side.  You'd have to break part of your camera body before you could break the pins.  There is absolutely no wiggle room in my card slot at all.

I know and I have to admit that the system is is very well designed, much more than the SD card's one... But if a pin can bend, I'm pretty sure it will be in my own camera!

I guess it is my paranoiac side  :-[

I've got loads of CF cards, so I use a cardreader.  CF cards are fairly indestructible, I don't think you've got too much to worry about!

I'm not worried about the card, but have you ever took a look inside your camera's CF port?  Those tiny pins scare me!

So I try to remove my 4Gb card only if it's almost full or I'm in a rush.  Otherwise I leave it there and plug the camera.  I agree with you Bateleur, it'much slooooower that way...

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Canon 400D / Rebel XTI
« on: February 19, 2008, 19:27 »
I've always wondered if the LCD on the few DSLR's that actually have live view if even useful for anything other than framing and possibly exposure (hard to tell how accurately it shows the exposure).  I cannot see how the resolution would be good enough to determine focus, I remember pointlessly trying to manually focus my PnS, even with the magnified area it was basically useless, the autofocus could always outperform it.  Though it is amazing how easy it is to see focus in the little viewfinder on a DSLR.

In fact, the only time that I use the Liveview function on my 40D is when I do studio shots and my camera is on a tripod and connected to my computer.

But then, believe me, you can have the view on your computer screen, magnify it up to 10 times and adjust the focus manually but from your computer.  Wow, imagine being able to browse through your photo and pinpointing the focus on your 22 in screen.  And it works!

But I agree with you that for any other kind of photography, it is more a gadget then a useful feature...

General Stock Discussion / Re: Potential Conflict of interests
« on: February 18, 2008, 12:21 »
This stock business is a business of mutual trust.

Contributors have to trust the sites that they will take good care of their photos, that every sale will be reported, that they will use efficient watermark and so on...

The sites have to trust the contributors that every photo is legitimate, model releases if any are valid, etc.

Sites and contributor have to trust the buyers in that they will respect the terms of service...

Buyers have to trust that photos are legitimate and that there are no copyright issues...

Yes I believe that there is a potential conflict of interest as you mentioned, but I live with it and I believe that without a mutual trust, this business will not survive.

ahhhh, you're back!

Leaf, I thought yesterday that something terrible might happened to you, like being arrested for taking photos of a public building, or using a tripod in London, or anything that terrible!  ;D

Glad to see that it is not the case!

Another thought could be to have a voluntary donation.. with perhaps a little 'perk' for 'paid members' like a 'members lounge' area of the forum.. for uhhh... members only discussion :) ... things we only wanted to discuss amoungst ouselves! :)  ... or perhaps have a perk as only paid members are allowed to have a forum signature (and thus referral links)...   anyhow for the time being things will remain the same.

Just a Voluntary donation button is perfect for me (with a Paypal link), no need to have anything special for now!

Thanx

In my dreams, I see a software that not only can upload my photos (with the right categories for each site (!)) but also keeps a log of every photos uploaded and its sales on each site.

Somekind of a FTP program mixed with a spreadsheet...

That's what I dream of... (and other things too  ;) )

Microstock News / Re: New license revealed

Well it was a matter of time before one agency closed the gap between RF photos and "press" type photos.

Now every stock photograph is a potential press photograph... Wonder what will be their reaction!

Papparazzi, grab your camera and get out!

From time to time I have a look on my personnal stats on this site (click on your profile and then on Show stats).

This morning it says Total time spent online: 5days 28 min.

That's a lot of 5 min coffee breaks!  ;)

General Macrostock / Re: How to decide
« on: January 22, 2008, 21:36 »
From what I'm reading here, it seems that macro is good for travel photos.  Is that right?

Or is it that travel doesn't sell well in micros?

I'm curious

Good to know that if I submit 10 images they will be reviewed in 24 hours.

Not so sure... I have 13 photos there waiting for reviews.  Uploaded in 4 small batches since jan 2.

We'll see...

I had that kind of problem with a Sandisk last year.  For some reason, initially the card was ok but after inserting it in the camera and shooting few test shots, I decided to format it.

It stopped working.  And the camera (a Canon 350 at that time) froze.  What a panic!!!

I got it back to the store I bough it and they replaced it.  So I guess that your problem is with that card.  Try to read it on another device.

Istock has biggest price for images but still they have more buyers than any other micro. I think there is a lot space for price to rise

This is a very good point.

We've red a lot of interresting points of view in this thread but I' m surprised that few people care about the low selling prices in microstock.  I mean that MS has gain a great level of maturity and as any other business, it has created his niche and has developed a market.

Now that the costumers are there, it is time IMO to raise the selling prices.  No matter how much is the commission (% or subscription), if the prices get higher, we will have more money, obviously.

I think that IS is going that way.  And I think that any site that does not follow that trend is bad for us.  No matter if a site is based on a subscription model or a per download, this is what we have to watch... and put pressure on those who will not follow the rising trend on sell prices.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Image sizes at iStock
« on: January 14, 2008, 20:30 »
From iStock's FAQ:

''Our images are available in X-Small, Small, Medium and Large. We also have some files available in XL and XXL. The x-small size is 400 x 300, small size is 800 x 600, medium size is 1600 x 1200, large size is 2560 x 1920, XL size is 4200 x 2800 and XXL size is 4900 x 3300. X-small and small images are 72 dpi. All other sizes are 300 dpi.''

That was an easy one!  ;)

Hi Adelaide,

this could be the anti pop-up of your browser.

Don't know how to deactivate it in Netscape and I don't remember in IE6.

Have a look in the tools or the options of your browser.  In IE7, it is under Tools.

Hope it helps!

I just sold 2 mediums for 1.40 and 1.44$ .

When mediums this week give me more $ than large last week, I don't care about the sizes!

What do you think is a realistic expectation of earnings from that size of portfolio growing at 20 images a month exclusively at iStock?

One of the advantages of going exclusive at IS is the higher upload limit (correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not exclusive there!)

So if you don't plan to upload more than 20/month, you are loosing one of the advantage, don't you think?

I would personnaly try StockXpert and SS before thinking of going exclusive anywhere.  That way you may have a more precise view of earnings you could have with your photos.

Speaking of earnings, I would expect between 100 and 150 dl's per month for a portfolio of the size of yours, and with the sales of SS and StockXpert.  Of course these figures can vary widely based on your type of photos but I guess that you can use these figures.

Very nice!

I noticed that your photos do not have watermark when view at full size; is there a risk of illegal download?

I wonder, how many hours did you spend on this site?

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia launches The Infinite Collection ???
« on: December 26, 2007, 11:29 »
Let's get paranoid!

What if we all get Fotolia's message wrong?

What if the message goes like: "you see, there's no need to go to a mid stock site, we, at FT, have better photos at better prices (ms prices) than any other mid stock agency"

Kind of "reverse" marketing...

A store in Canada (Future Shop, futureshop.ca) sells the small Bamboo for 69.99$ (1 $CDN = 1$US these days).  I spoke with a salesman last week and the only difference between the Bamboo and the Bamboo Fun is the Fun one includes a cordless mouse, which I already have.

Is that true?

Again, how is it possible to have such a big difference in price???

Taxes are high in Canada too!
