In other words:
If the percentage of unsold images increased in two years from 6% to 20% (licensed images - 94% in 2012 vs 80% in 2014), in relative terms it is a 300% decline.

In two years, SS collection will be in 60-70 million ballpark, and if the present trajectory continues, percentage of licensed images will drop to only 60%.

This question of earnings per online file on Fotolia got me thinking. My earnings have been flat with them, even though I continued to upload.

Worse than I thought. Earnings per online images have dropped by more than 50% over the past 3 years. Why on earth did I keep uploading images and suffering their mindless upload process with its complex categories and their high rejection rates.... I've again recommended that the readers of my blog ignore this latest attempt to bribe us with minute increases in payments.

Update: This is on 3000 images so is statistically valid. My earnings last month - $63!!

On top of it, there is also a very real possibility that if those images had not been offered on FT, they could have sold on the other agencies for higher price.

KerinF, thank you for your input. If my emails dont have an effect, they certainly do no harm. I just thought when a company is not abiding by EU laws, someone in politics might take action. I mean,  the EU went after Microsoft, Google and Facebook when they broke EU laws.

If nothing else, it will set their pants on fire.
And any other agency that is watching this development, will think twice before attempting a similar scheme.

I respectfully disagree. I think the amount of images that have been opted out in just a few days is phenomenal, considering the number of years it took to build up that library. More buyers are getting aggravated with disappearing files and tweeting about it. More of us are making those buyers aware of the boycott and other options for images. I see the message getting out there even more.

I'm sure every boycott, protest, and revolution seemed impossible at the beginning. Yet many of them worked. If citizens can overthrow governments, we can shut down one little website.

Very true, Michelle! And to paraphrase Neil Armstrong, it is just one small step as one little agency goes, but a giant leap for the community of creative photographers and illustrators.

Ability to voice our opinions on this board, creation of Symbiostock, establishment of a new type of artist co-op Stocksy agency, and other new agencies emulating their approach, and now a successful joint action to withdraw our images from DPC are all important milestones in reversing the previous trends to devalue images and exploit the authors. All these very concrete accomplishments would have seemed like an impossible dream just a few years ago.

Well, what can we do? What magazines, websites, newspapers do typical contributors read? Maybe we need to get a paid ad on/in those media. Maybe a journalist wants to pick up the story? Many people here have a day job as well, maybe they can help. Maybe they know people. Unfortunately I dont. One problem is that not everyone reads the same media as we are spread over many countries. But I think we need to target the USA, France, Germany, the UK and Russia and that is probably the majority of the contributors. I just have no idea how to do that. Lets hope the emails I have sent will have an affect. How does one get the EU to investigate if Fotolia broke the EU law? They investigated Microsoft, Google and Facebook, how did that happen?

Maybe we should write also an open letter to Scott Kelby's company to review their ways. They recently did a mass mailing how good DPC is for photographers who need some cheap images. After all, this is the same outfit that used to promote heavily IS in its heydays.

Even if the protest succeeded in getting more images opted out, Fotolia has the trump card. They can just shut off the opt-out and force inclusion. There is no scenario in which they just agree to shut the thing down. It won't happen.

Not in my book! Since they won't be selling my images at DPC, they don't have the trump card.

Opted out. 565 old files still on FT.

Software - General / Topaz Clean 3
« on: May 11, 2014, 23:05 »
Topaz Labs runs this month a promotion for Topaz Clean that can be used to smooth and clean portraits/faces, but you could use it also to control surface texture in other type of images.

The current promotion ($14.99 instead of regular $29.99) will run until May 31, 2014.
For more information or to purchase it at the reduced rate, use the link below:

and enter "mayclean" as the discount code at the checkout to get 50% discount

I have to admit that I haven't used this program very much before. I tried it again recently, this time on an image of a large airplane and the program did a really good job of getting rid of the noise in the shadow areas and all kinds of scuff marks on the fuselage. You can see the Before and After examples on the Topaz Clean review on my blogsite:

http://advantica.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/topaz-clean-review/

Another user reported that she uses it with a great effect on cleaning up fractal images. Not something I would think of, but apparently the program smoothes it nicely without loosing the fine details.

At this price, it's a simple and cheaper alternative to Topaz Simplify or Denoise plugins for cleaning up some images that could be otherwise rejected by the stock agency inspectors. As another possibility, if used with the Flat Style preset, the program creates a highly simplified version that could be used to generate a different variation of the original image - similar to some modes in their Simplify plugin.

Great idea, especially if repeatedly shown in a graphics format!
When it comes to the agency chart, show not only their expenses, but also their profit slice. In most cases it's bigger than the contributor's royalty.

As pointed out by Beppe, it is better to make the adjustments first in LR, and export them as TIFF or JPG files for Helicon stack processing.

Must be caused by one of those loose algorithms we hear so much about.

You are most welcome! I'm glad that you found the programs useful and that you got them at the discounted price.
Thank you for letting me know and also many thanks to Leaf who made this amazing site available to all of us.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock & Router (DLINK) Issue
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:13 »
For several months now, occasionally, when I force Screen Refresh or navigate to another screen within Shutterstock, I get a router error, (http://dlinkrouter/error-404.htm) and then I'm redirected to my Router (using Dlink) login screen and I'm prompted to enter router password and go through the router login. Going backwards in the browser takes me back to the last SS screen and when I press F5 or try to navigate to another SS function, I get again the router error.

At that point, if I type in the browser top field another URL, it opens without any problems. Also, if I close that tab and type SS URL in a new tab, usually it opens also correctly (not always).

Typically, I have a number of other browser tabs open, and they all work fine. Even more interestingly, some of the other tabs may be multiple instances of SS sessions, and they work also fine.

I'm using Win 8.1 and IE 11. I don't remember seeing this problem on my previous computer with Win 7.
I suspect that it is some timing problem between SS, browser and router.  Has anybody else experienced such problem and what could be causing it?

241
Yes, Goofy, I am affiliated with Topaz Labs.
For full disclosure, if you read the related reviews on my blogsite, I use also NIK, LR, PS. If I need a quick adjustment, I may use just LR or PS sharpening while I'm in those programs to save me a trip to an external plugin. In some situations, I use NIK. There are similar tools available also from other companies, but I don't have any experience with those.

However, for many critical image adjustments, especially for noise reduction and detail enhancement, I use Topaz DeNoise and Detail plugins myself and don't hesitate to recommend them to my friends and others. So far, all who acted on that recommendation, have been quite happy with them. Especially the ones, who bought these programs with 50% discount.

Topaz has just released an update with a new interface to their program - Version 3.2.
With the new interface, now you can see at a glance different variations of the image for multiple presets and select the one which you like best.

If you already have a previous version, just log in, and go to Topaz, Support, Upgrade and select Detail 3.2 upgrade
Any new purchases, should automatically download the latest version.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: FAA Launches Art Licensing
« on: April 08, 2014, 15:28 »
Just curious, what is the cut for stock photo contributors at FAA?
100%, you set your own pricing and they ad 40% on top of that or something. So theoretically you dont get 100% but if you want to get paid 10 dollar, you will get paid 10 dollar. He just sells it for 14.

The markup has been reduced to 30%, in other words the artist gets 77% from the selling price.

Well, the art image licensing beast has been released, it will definitely change the stock landscape, only the time will show how much, and how the buyers will react to the new offering.

The whole concept of FAA art licensing as it was originally announced a few weeks ago, has been reworked and refined, and I think for better.
The website name has been slightly modified from the original plan (technicaly, a subdomain of pixels.com), but the main change is that it's been made separate from the main FAA / pixels.com collection. Which is a good thing.
FAA's markup remains at 30% of artist specified price, as announced previously. In other words, the artist keeps 77% of the licensing fee charged to the end user.

Here is the announcement:

Ron, thanks for pointing out that this has been already discussed in the thread shown below, I wasn't aware of it.
I guess, this thread can be deleted or closed now.

Another month, another Topaz promotion!

This month, Topaz Labs runs a 50% off promotion for their Topaz Detail sharpening plugin. This program allows you to specify sharpening on multiple levels with the addition of local contrast. I find it especially useful for the creative sharpening phase in landscape or macro images.
The special price is only $19.99 instead of regular $39.99 which is a great deal for this plugin.

Main features and benefits:

 * Better control over image detail. Detail uses size-based processing that lets you independently adjust small, medium, and large details.
 * More natural images. The technology in Detail substantially reduces the halos and artifacts you get from over-sharpening.
 * More volume and three-dimensionality. Detail can enhance larger image features to increase the perceived "depth" of your photo.

I posted a short review of the Topaz Detail plugin with some examples on my blogsite.

http://advantica.wordpress.com/2014/04/08/topaz-detail-3/

The current promotion will run from Apr 10 to Apr 30, 2014. To see more information and before/after samples, or to buy it at the reduced rate, use the link below:
Topaz Detail
and enter "aprdetail" as the 50% discount code

Using this link, you should get also a 15% discount on any of their other products

EDIT:
Added the link to the review on my blogsite.

To the OP: Another factor, and an important one, is how many images are being added to each micro stock site each week.  I haven't checked lately but I think Shutterstock is adding around 200,000 new images per week. You, me, Sean, Luis, Ron.....all micro stockers are all competing against this.

It's been actually 250,000/week for SS lately. Other agencies are not that much further behind.
That's one million per month, 12 millions per year, 24 millions in two years which will bring SS in 2016 to 60 millions images, in 2019 to 100 millions. A portfolio with 10,000 images will constitute a very tiny slice of 0.0001 of the total inventory (.01%).

In other words, in three years, SS image inventory will double - from 35 millions to at least 70 millions. In order to maintain your 2014 earnings, you will need to double also your portfolio. It's hard to imagine that the agencies will raise their royalties, so in the best case scenario, even if you'll double your portfolio and earn in three years the same amount of 2014's dollars, the actual value will be diminished by the inflation rate. And that's the best case scenario.

The fact that a particular deal isn't as bad as some other deals does not make it a "good" deal.

It's not a great deal, but much better than subscription prices or partner sales at some other agencies. And as Ron points out, it's only a thumbnail. No danger of theft or inappropriate use. It's an additional application or sales channel.
Now, what I find really puzzling is that some contributors get ecstatic about their 10-27 cents sales for full-size mages with the other agencies.

Yes, you have the files, a non-functioning program, and memories (how the program used to work).  Unlike LR or other program with a perpetual license.

Don't even mention credit card and Adobe in one sentence.

Last year, I ordered online from the Adobe LR 5 upgrade and gave them my credit card data. Next day, I got an email from Adobe, that the order could not be fulfilled, without any explanation what was the problem. I called them and couldn't get through, just assumed that they were not able to process the credit card. Which was in good standing. The same day, I purchased with the same credit cards some Topaz plugins.
Then I ordered the LR upgrade on disk from Henrys, the biggest camera store in Canada. They just ran out of stock and although they re-ordered it, it took over 4 weeks to get it from Adobe. What an outfit! (I mean Adobe, not Henrys)

To add insult to injury, one month later Adobe let the hackers in and all customer data was stolen. Including the credit cards.
