The writing on the wall is starting to become pretty clear for both exclusives and independents who submit to Getty sites.  All that happened was they tried to toss the frogs into the boiling water and they jumped out.  This time around they are wisely placing the frogs in the cool pot of water and slowly turning up the heat.

Very well put Lisa. The three monkeys also comes to mind.

I don't know about others, but from my experience photos.com and JIU have not increased my PPD sales at StockXpert and I am yet to see any PPD from photos.com or JIU. If I had to make any conclusions at all it would be that my PPD sales have been cannibalized by subs from the three afore mentioned sites, I would even go as far as to suggest that these sites have even eaten into sales from Shutterstock.

I'm not trying to pretend to be a big player, my portfolio is quite modest, but it's been earning me a nice little income for nearly three years, however, in the last year or so I have seen my income at StockXpert tumble to around 25% of what it was.

I would love to hear anything positive from anyone who has financially benefited from the introduction of subs at and via StockXpert.

Off Topic / Re: Home entertainment system suggestions

I am looking to set up a home entertainment system and wanting suggestions on what you have found works well.

Lots of beer and a hoola-hoop.

SS, 123 and Crestock all take an eps and jpeg of the same file name, the jpeg is used as the thumb and for extracting keyword data. There isn't an real extra effort on the contributors part to create the jpeg straight from illustrator, it's straightforward. The jpegs aren't that big, so no real overhead on uploading. I have no idea how the backend ties the two files together. Again, as others have said, avoid the ZIP.

I would say Big Stock is the least time consuming upload for eps files, just upload the eps and thats it. They generate the thumb, however, in the past I have noticed that there can be quite a big shift in colour from the original file to the thumb. This may now have been fixed, or it may be the colour space used by the artist. I can't remember either if keywords and the like have to be added manually, which is a pain in the neck.

Thinking of it, I find uploading an eps and jpeg thumb containing the keyword stuff just a easy, there is no messing about with cutting and pasting stuff.

The extra steps for creating a ZIP file, a specific thumb size and manual keyword entry are the things to avoid.

Sorry if this reads a bit all over the place, I rushing to get to the chip shop.

I'm on target for a BME at DT, however, at IS things ain't so good. There will always be winners and loosers with search engine tweaks.

What's turned me off so far is that certain people seem to be under the impression that they can (almost) single-handedly whip up some sort of commercial website, or that they can successfully enter the marketplace with an absolute minimum of venture capital. I'm also put off that the people with the most to say on this are also the ones who hardly sell anything - they seem to blame their lack of income on 'unfair commissions' rather than their inability to make and market commercial imagery.

As to what's missing, I think that to be perhaps one of the earliest goals any organization needs to set: a mission statement.

perharps the collective could try approaching Photo Shelter as they already had once the model of a working site, AND, they had a similar mission ie. taking on Getty. I recall reading their frontpage agenda and thought, "wow David (no pun intended) taking on Goliath !"

With due respect, what makes you think you can make a success out of what Photo Shelter failed at?

Thanks for clarifying that  ??? Regards, David

Adobe Stock / Re: Fotolia Image Stats
« on: April 05, 2009, 08:03 »
I was informed on the FT forum that this feature is unavailable, so I had to trawl through my sold image list and add up the royalties for all the images I wanted the data for.

I know nothing about databases, but I wouldn't have thought it would not be difficult to implement, maybe they will use the extra commission they took away from us to make it a more user friendly place, or is that asking too much?
