Wow! IS Exclusives still getting special treatment even as independents on SS. Now, I've seen everything.  ;D

Also irritating: "Illustration is too simple" rejection for pics of cartoon eyeglasses and cartoon underwear.  Glasses.  Underwear.  How complex are they going to be???  >:(

Excellent! Less competition for my cartoon underwear.  ;D

You make a great advocate for SS, but not everyone has such positive experiences at SS. Maybe they should give you a signing bonus. For a bit of objectivity, if you do not already have a large established port on SS the odds that your new uploads will have good sales are limited by technical issues and the probability that you will have good sales with a new membership are dimming every day that SS does not fix its serious technical bugs.

What would you say to those who are experience significant issues with newly uploaded images. As someone else mentioned in one the our threads one of the top 10 microstockers has stated that he will no longer upload images to SS until they get a handle on the problem. http://submit.shutterstock.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=114196

I've heard about some of the bugs with new files on SS's forum. It seems like it hasn't been discussed much here though. I can't claim any personal experience though because I haven't uploaded anything new there for a year.

Talking about cannibalizing your sales at other site..?...  ???
Who in their right mind would upload to another (loser) new site that offers next to nothing....  ???

Patrick H.

Cannibalizing from what? Sites that pay you less of the share and per sale. If that's the case, give me a fork and knife. If anything it's the opposite. Most contributors are cannibalizing their sales at the larger sites. I'm not a contributor at AYCS, but I don't see the harm in giving them a shot.

Not everyone is badass...

I'm a badass. Ask anyone. They'll tell you.  ;D

I guess my policy has always been to not resubmit. If they don't want it, then so be it. It will go somewhere else.

I have to admit that I haven't read the last several pages of this thread from when I posted early today (too much yada, yada, yada), but mark me down as an early News Year's resolution... No more iStock threads. I'm giving them up. Everyone else is right. I don't care.  :)

Buy my photos! Following Cory's lead...shameless plug inserted into old thread.  :D

I try to look through the individual artist sites that I have bookmarked when I need photos (yours included). Unfortunately, I don't buy images very often. I'd like to compile a larger list at some point. It's a pet project on the back burner now though.

That's not the point, the point is that I can't understand someone having difficulties understanding how the slider works. Is graphic, intuitive and very simple.

The mechanics of it are pretty simple (it's a slider that gives you price ranges), but the results that it gives you can be a little confusing. Especially for illustrations. The price ranges for illustrations on each dot can vary $10 to $20. Which makes it kind of useless if you have a real budget.

photodeck do has ftp, and the images with right 'title' keywords are picking up by google images..

It is a stable site, and if you have direct customers then it is perfect, since no commission charge for any sale, you can just ask your customer to browse your site..

the coupon code 50% discount of first month..
YG@UNMKGW

or just simply try for free for 7 days?, but you will lose the discount..

Do they allow vectors or is it just jpegs?

I need a lot more to convince me to start uploading.  Why is your site going to do better than the hundreds of others that aren't making any money?  I have uploaded my portfolio to a few sites that pay good commissions and let us set prices but they have either closed or have very few sales.  I can't understand why people are still opening new sites, unless they can come up with innovations that haven't failed many times in the past.  There's already far too many sites selling the same images.  The only ones that have had success in recent years have invested lots of money.  Just look at all the failures in the earnings poll, that's only a fraction of those that have started since 2005 and have failed to generate sales.

I'd say the demand is still there for new sites. I think Photodune showed just how easy it is to sneak in and compete. Until someone comes up with a site that is so incredible that it makes you wonder why you are bothering with the rest, there will be room for new sites. I'm still holding out hope for that, but I'm not sure it's very close to happening.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock fails to recover ground
« on: December 02, 2011, 17:16 »
Out of curiosity, I went back to check download counts at Shutterstock.  In November, 2005 I had 268 DLs.  November, 2006 saw 425, a 58% increase.  November, 2007 saw a 20% drop to 344.  2008 was up 28% to 442.  2009 grew another 9% to 485.  2010 was up 10% to 537.  Last month grew 26% more to 679.

And those are just the downloads, not the revenues from those downloads.  Downloads grew by 153% in six years; income grew 615%.  That's due to increases in subscription royalties, as well as extended licenses and other non-subscription offerings.

I didn't do a month-to-month comparison for every month, but I suspect the results would be equally impressive.  In any event, I've seen growth of both kinds.

Do all your months look like that? I have months that look like that through the years, but I also have months that look the exact opposite. My November's are pretty consistent from 2007-2011. '07 - 1029, '08 - 971, '09 -1244, '10 - 1126, '11 - 1008. It just seems like the range of downloads hasn't changed that much for me. Every month has been somewhere between 800-1500 for the last 4 years. Granted, income is way up from 2007, so, like I said, I can't complain. But, it makes me think.

I just voted.  I was surprised to learn that a whopping 69% of my SS money comes from non-subscription sales.  I think the subs still account for a large majority of my total downloads there, but the increase on OD sales and the massive increase in ELs has helped swell the dollar totals.

This is why I don't get people's rosy outlook on SS. They haven't really seemed to have grown much in the last 4 years. They just swapped out subscription sales for On Demand sales. Income is up (that's good), but the number of downloads is about half of what it was in 2007 (even though my portfolio is 2 to 3 times bigger). It seems like they sacrificed their subs sales for the more lucrative On Demand. I can't complain about that, but it seems more like a "switch-a-roo" than growth. Now, they are introducing single sales, so I'm going to predict another 4 years of imaginary growth.  ;)

I always kind of felt the same about iStock too. Were they really growing or just increasing prices at a rate that seemed like growth?

Do buyers like us being able to set any price we want?  Other sites have tried it and then went back to fixed prices.  Buyers don't like finding what they want and then not being able to afford it.  It seems like a good idea but it looks like it doesn't work.

I submit to several sites that allow you to set your own price, and it works just fine. Some have consistent sales and others don't. It really depends on the site (just like sites with fixed prices).

I'll bite. I'm a doubter. It's a good agency, but to be honest, it's nowhere near even iStock circa 2009-2010 for me. But that iStock is probably not coming back, so SS is as good as it gets.

Is no one learning anything from istock? Exclusivity at SS would be a terrible idea, and they know it.

It'll never happen, and we should all be thankful for that.

Agree 100%. You look at the volatility of any internet company and things could look very different in a few years.

I think I want to change my answer anyway to:

2. Buy a fiddle.
3. Watch Rome burn.

Sorry, I just don't have enough optimism to have a real answer.
