StockXpert.com / Re: Let's go back in time!!
« on: August 16, 2008, 22:21 »
Ironarrow, I don't think you were around this forum when StockXpert introduced subs and it did indeed cause a lively debate which led to dozens, perhaps hundreds of contributors to opt-out of sub sales.  (StockXpert offered the option to opt-out because of contributor backlash).   We have either come to accept the 30 cent commission or we have opted out.  A year has not yet passed and StockXpert cannot screw with their client base prices so soon.  DT and SS have both increased their subs commissions this year and seem to do so on an annual basis.  I would certainly expect when the first term ends StockXpert will raise both their prices and commissions as well, but it may be a longer period now that they are partnered up with these other sites.

I do appreciate that you have the interest of ALL of our rights at heart, but we did protest the subs and StockXpert gave us an opt-in or opt-out.   A majority of us take our cheque every month from SS made up of .25 or .38 sub sales, so it is ethically very difficult to initiate a war against the other sites without terminating our #1 or #2 commission earner.

It is very easy to complain, but what can we collectively do to make the business better?

Thanks for that.  I guess the keywords then are:

Please note that we will be addressing the artist name on the image details page for copyright acknowledgment post-launch.

Hopefully post-launch means immediately after launch, and not a few years down the road.

I have opted back into subs, but I must admit, it is with a bit of a sick feeling.  I hate to endorse 30 cents per download, but I will give this a whirl because I am grateful to StockXpert for not saying "our way or the highway" and I will see what happens.  Hopefully we can distinguish between the two plans in our sales reporting.

The rest of this post might be moot if the (c) has changed, if it did I missed it.

One thing that troubles me though is that images say "property of Photos.com" or "Jupiter Images".  Did I miss where this point changed at all, or are we still anonymous contributors to this program?  What about the name brands that everyone has worked so hard to build.

Are we anonymous so buyers cannot easily search our names on another site to find their ppd's for different prices?

But, when it comes to "search fairness" we will not all be equal?  The buyers won't be able to find a style they love - and click through to, say, Yuri's portfolio and shop there for more images.   Maybe the sales will be more evenly spread out?

I'm still uncomfortable if my Intellectual Property will be flogged without my name beside the copyright.

Thanks Claude, for some reason I was multiplying 3300 x 4824.

I knew I would look really stupid if I typed the word whoo-hoo.

On Photos.com, only "Super", "Ultra", and EPS sized files are sold as PPDs. "Super" roughly equates to an "XL" Stockxpert image, and an "Ultra" roughly equates to an "XXL" Stockxpert image. An image is categorized as "Super" if its longest side has a length between 3300 and 4824 pixels. An image is categorized as "Ultra" if its longest side is longer than 4824 pixels. If, however, your Stockxpert "XXL" image falls below the pixel length range for an "Ultra", it will be available as a "Super" PPD and EL.

Ah.... yes.  The "Super" is just short of a 16mp camera and that excludes a majority of us from PPD's.

But does that exclude us from subscribers Photos.com's?

Should I be jumping around screaming whoo-hoo, I qualify for 30 cent downloads only!!! or am I missing something?

Doesn't Featurepics offer this?  Hasn't driven much traffic there that I'm aware of.

Okay, this is getting to the annoying point.  For the past several weeks, just about every time I go to look at a video I get a message:  "We are sorry but this video is no longer available".

I'm on CJ's blog feed and the day this video came out I couldn't see it and now everyone else obviously has.  Whatz up????  Have Canadian IP's been banned from YouTube?

Lucky me, I missed the carp (although I experienced millions of floating walleye last summer at my sisters cottage in Sask BLECH!!!).  I guess it wasn't last Saturday it was the Saturday before (two weeks this weekend).  Their place is near Pefferlaw.  You are nearby aren't you?

TAnd uploading to a bunch of others takes so much time and energy..

Yeah, but you can upload to all the other sites in the same amount of time as uploading to Istock; Yuri Arcurs did an study:

OMG, I noticed the vests last night.  How lovely.  They have an assigned number on the back, something like "Photog 4402".    Is this normal? To give the photographers a "uniform"?

And, are the photos censored I wonder by that crazy government?

How much money do you think is sitting in the inventory that press booth?

Hey Penny, I was in your part of the world last week.  Spent Saturday night on Lake Simco.

Lighting / Re: slave flash
« on: August 14, 2008, 14:29 »
If it it fires more than once, maybe the red-eye reduction is on.  Also, some cameras send a bit of light that so the auto-focus can work.  This light doesn't trigger my cheap little slaves, but it does trigger my sensitive studio lights if they are set up as slaves.  If this is the case, can you focus manually?

You may be able to attempt putting a tissue, or a few layers of that white non-translucent office tape over your flash.  As long as it is enough light to still trigger the slaves, you can experiment and come up a good exposure that would be more pleasing than on-camera flash.

Hey, number one search placement on Yahoo!  And not bad on Google either, top 5.

And, thanks for pointing out the tip.  I'll leave the pricing up to your team in the future.  This will make your fast upload super fast for me.

Ichiro - you are in Toronto aren't you?  How do you receive your funds?  Does it happen to be by Paypal?  I do have a U.S. account in a Canadian bank, but was under the assumption that PayPal won't deposit into a Canadian bank account unless funds are converted to Canadian $.  (Then they can take a commission for converting.)  I'd love to hear that I am wrong as I'd prefer to use my U.S. account.

;D So for once it has paid for me to be a blababoosh. ;D Keep giving me sells, I'll keep blabbin!

Kidding aside, the payout is $10 so I'll even be able to cash out this month.   This will be the next test!

Hehe - I thought of that too... but they can use our photos as they like in promos can't they, why would they pay?  The only one I thought I was ever paid for promos from was LO.

Wow, a week later and another sale on Zymmetrical this morning.  Normally I wouldn't be so excited about 2 sales on a new site; but, these are pretty significant sales when you compare them to what the micros are paying.  Sales of $56 have earned me $39.20.

Sidenote:  If that was Istock, and they sold $56 I would have received $11.20.

This leads my next connundrum.  Pricing.  I preferred it when Zymmetrical applied the price, but now we set our own and I am not always confident what it should be.   I guess I'll stick with the 15-35 range are as it doesn't seem to deter the buyers.

I really like the way this site is progressing (even without the sales, but that makes me like it more!).  And they are still in beta.  Who are their buyers?

I just refreshed and earnings from the 8th are back.  Hopefully the rest will follow.

I was wrong - the 8th was the month - I'm still missing everything.

I just checked stats and all of my sales from August 8th - 11th have vanished.  The downloads is 0, cd backups gone - and of course the earnings from this period is wiped.

This has to be some kind of programming glitch but it makes me VERY nervous.

Please let me know if I am alone.

StockXpert.com / Re: POLL: StockXpert Opt-in
« on: August 12, 2008, 11:14 »
A trial would be by individual definition.  It doesn't mean "I'll opt-in and never think about it again", it means "I'll opt in but I won't be passive in my evaluation".

- I think that StockXpert contributors are pretty loyal and want to help them grow and for the time will give them the benefit of trust but are uncertain or overwhelmed by the attention this subject has received.
- Perhaps they feel they have been rewarded by the subs program at StockXpert, but are hesitant about the photos.com subs program yet they do not want to opt out of the StockXpert subs program
- Perhaps they are uncertain, but can't stand the immediate thought of lost income
- Perhaps they have read too much in these forums and want to try it out for themselves.

One quote I've read on StockXpert forum that is sticking with me was something like this:  "I'm going to buy all the Ron Chapple photos and open myself a Ron Chapple Store on e-bay and keep all the profits for myself."  Sorry to single out Iofoto, but that is what someone else posted on StockXpert.   I am thinking that if I found a store with my products that were purchased legally on photos.com I would opt-out pretty fast.

Many reasons.  And many reasons to opt-out on trial basis as well.  This is just the beginning.  The next partnership may be fabulous.  Or the terms of this photos.com agreement may change.  Who knows.

StockXpert.com / Re: POLL: StockXpert Opt-in
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:03 »
My questions are mainly about the immediate introduction of photos.com and the imposed deadline of August 15.  There has been a lot of emotion over this new proposal, and a lot of public threats made ("I'm gonna leave, pull my best sellers, go exlusive elsewhere").  It seems to me to be a good compromise on StockXpert's behalf, but so many are angry about the licensing terms that if they all opt-out it may totally destroy StockXpert's subs program that they have developed over the last year.

I have already made my desicion, I am not trying to sway voters.  But I would like to know how everyone is reacting to StockXpert's concessions.

Re, the 15th deadline:  from reviewing various forum posts, I think that some are under the impression that there is an "annual" opt-in/out.  See Steves quote below:  if you don't like the current program but something new is introduced in the future that may offset this one - you can opt-in.

#1 If you want your images included or exclude by the august 20 launch date, then please make your decision by August 15. You can opt-in or out at any time after that. The database is sync'ed once a week, so your images will be include or excluded during the week that you make your decision.
