Withouth looking at SS sizes... it depends on what the designer is using it for. Often they specialize in something and do the same type of work over and over - and know exactly what they need.
If buyers are downloading 300 photos per month - that is a lot of space.
I doubt many bloggers buy photos at SS, but the IS - XS is a perfect blog size - and the blogger doesn't have to open a separate photo editor and resize the photos before placing them in their blog. If they buy all their photos in the same size from the same agency the blog will have a consistency.

Hey Nikon users. If you don't know already, Capture NX has been upgraded and 60 day trial is available for download. http://www.capturenx.com/I processed a a soccer team through the new version last night and there's definitely many improvements - although it is still very slow. This batch of photos was taken late on a very dark evening n overcast night and it helped me brighten up the background a bit quite easily without fussing around. The control points are also improved. Why did they release it with it being so * clunky though??? Supposedly takes more than twice as long as Lightroom. Now, I have 7 more teams to process today so I'm back to it.

Seren, what do you do with full body shots on the lastolite? I have their stupid expensive vinyl floorcloth (waste of 150 bucks) and it looks just awful in the pix. It's always grey or if I try to light it the lower limbs are overexposed. What works for you? I'd love to do it all in-camera, but the floor always adds too much time in post. Maybe I should shoot no full body shots.

They've also changed their photo levels by introducing a lower level 2.
Level 1 0-4 dls Level 2 5-19 Level 3 20-49 Level 4 50-99 Level 5 over 99

Thanks Leaf. I'm still not entirely sure what I need. It is two purchases right - a receiver and a transmitter?
The last couple big purchases I made were actually cheaper coming from Vistek than B&H if you can believe it. They pay freight over a certain amount and no Fedex brokerage fees etc., with the good dollar right now the price is very good to shop in Canada for most things, mostly because of the difference in shipping - (if the store's importing fees have gone down on new inventory that is).

Yes, you can upload 2mp to SS. If you were signed up with them before sometime around late 06 I think.

You can remove it from being exclusive at any time can't you? Unless YOU are exclusive, then you may have to remove the photo. Or did you place it exclusive as part of DT's contests?

They have a babies light box right now and - no - I don't have a baby in the lightbox, but I had to check because one of my baby shots that never caught on started to sell every day. I wonder if lightboxes bring more attention to the whole theme?
And congrats Litefida. Nice to be recognized.

Can't SB-800 command the 600? I most likely need to splurge for pocket wizzard soon too. I use my speedlights right now with the D200 as commander. Is there a reason why you don't use the camera as commander?
I have same two speedlights... and my studio strobes radio triggering system just quit - I've been using a backup safe-synch with my strobes for a couple months, but it looks like I'll have to get a cheapo radio trigger again or splurge on a pocket wizzards setup. Noone stocks them in my market, so I have to do my research and they can bring it in for me or I'll order from Toronto.
So - I'm very interested in the response you get! Thanks for asking a good question for me.

Thanks for the heads up - they were one of my July projects. Good grief, I don't have time for that either and my port is tiny. I know that some (like Leaf) have added a small photo to the top of their release all along.

I think this is for both old and new photos isn't it?

Don't they care about our images?
Rephrase that question... don't they care about contributors? If anyone doesn't immediately know the answer to that question, go to the Fotolia boards and search for clues.

I had one "resubmit without a model release" this week, and the resubmit was live within 24 hours. I thought that was pretty good. DT falls behind fairly often - but they always catch up.

I thought about this overnight before I answered it.
I voted Yes. If this is a photograph that I knowingly placed on the micros, I would have to be very pleased. If you look at the placement of our microstock photographs, an appearance on the cover of Time would be almost comparable to an elite athlete making it to the Olympics.
Yes, I'm guessing I would be stoked. I would email a copy to my sisters and my friends. It would realize that it would likely never happen twice.
At the same time, I am also certain that I would have a sick feeling in my stomach. The reality is - I know what I am participating in. I know what Microstock is and I need to adjust my thinking to accept both the highs and the (23 cent) lows.
Some photographers would go out and aggressively seek opportunities to get magazine covers and big deal jobs. I can't say that I would ever be one of them. So - the opportunity of my photo appearing on Time Magazine would be a once in a lifetime deal. It is also a very realistic opportunity that all of us have, isn't it?
I might find a true niche some day that I feel I excel in and am finally in a position to exploit... but until that happens - I think that I would have to be happy with the $28 cover of Time.
I would still reserve the right to be disappointed that such a large circulation pays (now) $28.
And that sick feeling in my stomach would be 10 times magnified everytime someone (and they will) asks how much I was paid by Time.
But, that's the deal with micro. I must accept it for what it is. Just please Time Magazine, give me a credit.

I'm past the point of being upset by people who borrow my keywords - but for God sake review them first before you paste them. I've put my user name into a few of my images so I can tell who has simply cut'n'pasted. My fave is the guy from Netherlands with a photo of a single elk crossing the road who used my keywords: he has used two, duo, pixart, saskatchewan (a province in Canada), prairie.. and others that do not relate at all. Maybe he doesn't even speak english. No big deal. Some of them are quite obvious, but one with my name is a chalet and I can't imagine which photo he copied them from because I have nothing like it.
I wonder if sleezy spammers put Iofoto in keywords just to get extra hits?

Subs are increasing at DT and StockXpert and decreasing at SS.
Coincidence?

DT definitely has a rotation in their search engine. It seems to be the worst month possible and then the rotation will turn and at the end of the month I make roughly the same as I have for the past 10 months.
DT is the site that I feel most comfortable with. And in my eyes, they are extraordinarily fair to the contributor. Reviews are consistent (although sometimes take a little long).
To add to Leaf's list of things to rave about - they have the best stats retrieval page where you can see views, sales, on-line date all at a glance. Some of these sites make it so darn difficult.
Edited: We should really mention their recent addition of showing the keywords searched. I find it quite useful for reference (and often a good source for amusement as well!)

I appreciate the debate this has presented and I think I am developing my own plan here - but don't let me stop the debate just because I'm the OP.
I guess I shouldn't feel bad offering $10-$20 per hour for a first trial session. I would expect that if I find that a model works quite well with me (and I see a return - that part is important) I would be very happy to pay that model a more reasonable sum. Maybe I'll develop some kind of scale along this line.
And - if that model wound up on - a herpes medication billboard - I wouldn't feel as bad if they had been paid for the session and signed the release plus an additional document explaining what RF is and where their image may appear. Even though a herpes billboard would likely be defamatory and require special permission - could you imagine the razzing a student would get at school?
And TFP.... I would think that someone who needs headshots or a book would be thrilled with a TFP arrangement. It just don't know if it's a good idea for someone who wants to earn a living modeling to spread their face around RF.
Thanks for the lively discussion guys. I'm diggin it!

I've got a better rub. The publisher contacted me to see if I was okay with my photo on this book cover (controversial) and asked me to provide a release (I mentioned a book cover before, but it was finally released this month so here it is) To send the release it cost me a special trip to post office for a non-domestic 90 cent (plus GST) stamp and then my kid put it in her sticker book. I had to buy another stamp, and another trip to pick it up (but gas was only around a buck a litre last fall...) and I was paid a whole dollar on BigStock for it. Microstock is what it is... but this is the first time it has cost me money to sell a photo! Hmm... I think my tearsheet says How to RAISE a serial killer - but here it is.

Sharply, your "selective" advice is great. And my "cheezy" instincts were probably correct.
Here's the next connundrum. How does one determine a rate for amateur models? A kid would likely have a working threshold of about an hour.
Do you still give a cd?
I have no strong desire to use kids over adults, but the opportunity might be there for me.

I have about 400 packages going out next couple weeks, mostly kids 12 and under - but their parents are who they ultimately go to.
(Edit - those are photo packages, btw)
- Part of me thinks this is an opportunity. - Part of me thinks it is super cheezy.
Would it be super cheezy if I put a line on the receipts that says
We are now recruiting models of all ages and types for summer sessions to add to our portfolio of stock photographs. Sessions are free and you will be compensated with a cd of at least 5 shots from each costume or theme. A model release is required. Please see (link) for more information.
I've been super busy and I'm taking July off. I wouldn't mind shooting stock though a few days a week and editing over a couple months.
But, is this is a professional line that I shouldn't cross? If not, anyone have some better language I could use?
