Microstock Services / Re: Lookstat Giving it a try
« on: January 07, 2009, 07:19 »
Looksat is of limited use to me as an IS exclusive but I have been giving it a spin over the past month or so.

I've only spoken to Rahul over the phone but he seems like a nice guy and the service he is providing with LS is really breaking new ground in terms of stats for microstockers. He is also very on the ball about adding new features and integrating user requests into the service. I would definitely recommend trying it out.

This is a real stroke of genius! IS can have their cake and eat it here. Keeping the exclusives happy and undercutting the competition by putting the non-exclusives images (that the compeditors have already) into the "new" dollar bin...

Undercutting the competition? With 200,000 images? Really?

Watch that initial 200,000 grow very rapidly.

...The question is will the big non exclusive ex macro players be tempted to go exclusive? I can see IS sweetening the pill by  removing upload restrictions for this expanding collection in the next 6 months so whole thousand+ collections can be put into it by a select group of premium content providers....

It has already been said that it is unlikely anyone could get an entire portfolio into the premium collection.

And the answer to your question is probably a resounding "no", since most of those big non exclusive ex macro people are doing much better elsewhere.

Hi Helix7,

Watch that initial 200,000 grow very rapidly.

We don't know that you couldn't get a whole collection in. Maybe yes, maybe no.

The main reason all those big ex macro shooters are doing better elsewhere is the upload limit on IS prevents them testing the full potential of there 10,000+ image portfolios. If that bar is removed and one or two more StockXpert type byouts happen this will once again make the IS proposal more attractive. Especially if IS does a "image exclusivity" deal with them.

Who knows for sure but its interesting to speculate

Interesting times.

Respect,

NS

General Stock Discussion / Re: My day with Yuri Arcurs
« on: December 10, 2008, 03:38 »
Hi All,

This is a bit of a rant, you have been notified.....

Have you ever noticed whenever there is a Yuri post there is always some form of what I like to call " Yuri Envy ". It always surprises me that this takes place. It seems to be limited but it happens almost every time.
If Yuri had personally offended someone then I could understand a little bitterness I guess but why do some feel threatened by this one guy. He is great at what he does and he seems to offer a lot of helpful advice for FREE. He is always trying something new to increase profit and reduce overhead at the same time sharing those ideas with all of us for FREE. I guess I just don't get it. He was helping people long before he realized there might be profit in it.
I can tell you why his images sell better than any exclusive at Istock. He is a better shooter, better at understanding the buyers needs and especially better at how to promote his Brand. There will always be a Tiger Woods or a Michael Jordan  in the game. It is the same in Macro stock. There are some guys I know that just make more money than I do, they are better at their craft. I think these people should inspire you and push you to do better work. I know they do that for me and always will.
All I can guess is that some people are just easily threatened and that's a shame. You are all great photographers in your own right and there is no one that can stop you from being the next Yuri of Micro, except for yourself. Don't see him as anything but a mark to shoot for if you wish, or a mentor if you find his information helpful. There is nothing wrong with having mentors. I have had a few in my life and they have all been a great asset.

Just my opinion,
Best,
AVAVA

Well put AVAVA! You hit on the nail.

They are maturing the MS market in the same way RF did in the early years of the 21st century.

Or maybe not....  like AVAVA  says who knows what's coming down the road!

Having spent a month in a studio many years ago trying to shoot this kind of stuff for stock I feel your pain.

The real problem is that you need a studio flash with a really short flash duration.
The only one on the market that does this is the Broncolor A4 or A2.

The Broncolor gear specializes in this kind of short duration stuff.

As for the timing of the shutter release...trial and error! Or maybe that's why it took us so long!

iStockPhoto.com / Istock Daily Sales Reports Acting Up
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:28 »
Hello All,

Has anyone noticed that the way IS calcultates how many DLs you've had a day seems to have changed? It used to update at about 10:00 GMT but now seems to updating much earlier and leaving out some of the sales.

Anyone else found this?

Cheers
