I agree - bringing your lights outside works too.

I would be very interested.

Lucato, Regarding Alamy, the sales vary very much month by month but it's definitely worth uploading there. I'm surprised you haven't heard of them. You can also upload your RF images there (same images as on the micros). I have a small port (approx 300 images) but managed to sell 1 image for 1300 last year (I got 40%). They made more for me last year than any micro but that was just a lucky year I think.

Good luck to you.

General Stock Discussion / Acceptance at Alamy
« on: March 18, 2013, 18:12 »
Never had a rejection at Alamy. I'm surprised they would reject images accepted at SS. SS are normally very picky on focus.

We can't really comment unless you post the images.

General Photography Discussion / Large peel and stick prints
« on: March 06, 2013, 19:41 »
My wife wants to decorate the walls of her business with some stock photos I recently purchased. I was thinking of getting large peel and stick prints. Does anyone have any experience with these. Do they stay stuck or eventually peel off and any issues installing them. I'm looking at 30x40 approx.

Thanks

I don't post very often but I am a bit tired of reading all the taunting from the macro duo. It's in bad taste. It looks like they are taking bets on how long they can act like a$$holes before they get banned(see quote from Zanox below from Alamy thread:  http://www.alamy.com/forums/default.aspx?g=posts&t=15111). Clearly, they will continue to act like a$$holes until they get banned. Leaf, maybe its time to humour them.

quote from Zanox (Stocktard?)

"i just added a comment on MSG forum, let's see how long it takes before they ban me ....

Welcome to the real world !

Stealing ideas and concepts from the top macro RF/RM photographers is what microstock has always been all about from day one.

Coupleds also with the "genius" idea of selling these ripoffs at 1/10th or 1/100th of the price buyers were used to pay.

Now fast forward in 2013 and you reap what you sow with the added bonus that buyers perceive stock photography in general as worthless or worth no more than 5-10$ bucks per image as that's how low you've been happy to set the bar.

Sorry but it's too late now to realize in horror you've all shot yourselves in the foot and there's no way out and no exit strategy.

Getty also launched a very clear message to the crowd of scared puppies : you plebs are irrilevant and worthless for our business, and our focus will be on the new happy snappers producing images for free and sharing them on Instamatic and other rights-grab services as that's the future of stock.

No glass ceiling in microstock, get ready for nanostock or even to pay money to join an agency."

Paul, I would love to see Alamy added.

I recently had a 112$ commission on SS for an isolated object. No chance of it being sensitive in any way.

Adobe Stock / Fotolia Emeralds 7 day ranking poll (emeralds only)

Well, I'm far from being an emerald but my 7day rank dropped from 2k to about 10k. I don't upload much so I suspect that's the reason.

General Stock Discussion / Pics for comments on iStock Submission
« on: December 15, 2012, 14:31 »
Tom, I would suggest also to downsize the image to the minimum accepted. They are very picky on the application- you can submit full size once accepted. I always do very little post processing for IS - I might add a bit of saturation, a slight S-curve and tweak the lighting slightly.

37
Is the app working for anyone. It's shutting down when tryingg to download stats from IS.

Off Topic / Re: Paypal account hacked
« on: December 09, 2012, 20:24 »
The account may not have been hacked. I had a similar experience with McAfee. They sent me several renewal notices by mail and email, which I ignored because I was planning on replacing my PC with a Mac. They later sent the bill to Paypal and it was payed without my approval (apparently all they need is your email).

Photo Critique / Re: Photo critique for iStockPhoto
« on: November 23, 2012, 15:38 »

you need something more commercial - even if that image was perfect in terms of focus, composition and lighting, it still would be an LCV (low commercial value). Think of how the buyer would use the image on a website, advertisement, etc. You can upload other types of images later if you want but the application should show that you can produce material with high sales potential.

Good luck.

It took me 2 tries to get into SS about 7 years ago. I recognize now that my images weren't all that good then.

Photography is by its nature subjective. As with anything subjective, you will have a certain percentage of the inspectors that will like it and another percentage that will not. If your images are outstanding, then most of the inspectors would approve. Find subjects that are varied and commercial and make sure that the images are technically perfect. Downsize if you have to.

Post your images here and ask for people's opinions in terms of what you should submit.

Good luck. SS is worth it btw.

Shutterstock.com / Re: Downsized for acceptance??
« on: November 16, 2012, 12:18 »
I used to "de-noise" all my images for SS when I was shooting with the old canon 300d. Once I upgraded to the 5dmark II in 2008, I stopped using noise reduction software and have never received a rejection for noise. I don't downsize anything. I haven't submitted in close to a year, however. Maybe something has changed?

42
You might want to get your story straight...

You indicate youv'e been creating illustrations for 2-3 years and then suggest you can prove the images were created in 2007. How does that help your case?

Good luck with that.

Alamy.com / Re: another typical week at Alamy
« on: November 07, 2012, 12:16 »
and this is typical for you? I have never had a single image refunded at Alamy since 2007 (fingers crossed).

44
does the new version still work on IOS 5?

45
well, pile driver is probably an LCV. What would a designer use that photo for? The mosquito spiral also has a very limited use. Try to shoot something that is of greater commercial interest, at least for the application.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Outdoor shots- Lighting Requirements
« on: September 20, 2012, 11:26 »
shooting on cloudy days will probably get you a poor lighting rejection due to flat lighting.

I've used a single off-camera flash with umbrella successfully outdoors as well as my studio strobes with umbrellas. Much as Oxman described with the model in the shade so the sun lights the background and you have full control over the foreground lighting. I don't normally get lighting rejections when I use flash but often when I use natural lighting. Fortunately, Alamy isn't nearly as picky on "real world" shots so it isn't a total waste of time.

Just loaded the app. Works great. I would like to see Alamy there next. For me, Alamy is equivalent to a top tier.

BTW, when I search for istock, your app doesn't show up in the search yet your competitor's app does (photo sales). Do you "keyword" the apps - if so, you should probably include all the site names).

Regards,

John
