Microstock News / Re: iStock, Pitney Bowes & FedEx Kinkos

You're welcome. :)

I see the latest news posting on iStock says they'll tell us more in the first quarter of 07'.  I guess they released this info a little too early?  Never the less, seems like a good deal.

One of the admins just posted this:

"Hi there everybody. Nothing has changed since this morning - deal is still all good. We'll be posting something again tomorrow. Our partners want some time to be able to do their own press. We wanted to put something up today to ensure that all of you heard it from us first."

iStockPhoto.com / Re: How's it been at iStock for October?
« on: November 01, 2006, 12:43 »
Best month ever for me on IS for DLs and sales.  I did work on my tags and added phrases to most of my files.  If this helped or not I can't say as I really don't understand how the search routine there works.  Sales were also up on SS and DT as well.

I was under the impression that being exclusive did not help you in the search results.

Somebody on the IS forums (and I don't know if this is true), said that being in the creative networks would bump you up in the search results.  Apparently that no longer works, if it did before.

As CJPhoto said, nobody really knows what is going on in the search engine there.

I just tried it and found a couple of my bird photos on the first page of results.  Both from Fotolia.  They are both on iStock as well, but found no results from them.  Maybe in time...

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock -- organizing keywords and phrases?
« on: October 15, 2006, 14:11 »
Yeah, I noticed the results were really fast after I made changes.  Not the 24 hours they state.

My sales seemed to go up after I made the changes and added phrases.  Last week was my best ever on IS,  though I get the feeling it may be ebb and flow.

I don't presume to be an expert on what is going on with the search engines changes at IS, but  I have found that images appear in the search much better with phrases.  Now, having said that, it could all change in an instant, with it all in a flux.  I did notice that images where I have the proper tags were not appearing and when I used a phrase, they popped right up.

If you have the time, check out the "Current Search Issues" thread on the IS forums.  It's rather lengthy but has some good info.

My sales are up but only on SS and IS.  My sales at IS have been the best ever since I worked on my keywords over the weekend, trimmed down the tags and added phrases.

I see the complaints are beggining to pile up on the IS forums too.  Even the bigger sellers are complaining.

What I'm doing is going through my better selling pictures and inputing phrases.  It seems to help.  Well, phrases that it will accept.  It's picky about that too.  For example, for one picture, it took "mexican pryamids" but not "aztec pyramids."  And things like that.

Yeah, I had only 2 DLs yesterday on IS.  It's been slow all week.  With me, I think it's the issue with the keywords.  I'm spending a lot of time working with that, as files of mine that normally would show in the search weren't coming up.  I found they would if I used a tag phrase.  Needless to say, I miss the old system.

Somebody on the forums said they contacted support and were told it'll revert back to the way it was. They are apparently working on things, but as usual, didn't let us know in advance.

Anybody getting images reviewed? I've got files over 3 weeks old waiting. Doesn't look like they're catching up.

Same here, I've got images that have been waiting for weeks.  Sales haven't moved since early Sept. either.

Good point. They do have a tendacy to make deals behind the scenes. Then, we all find out about it later.
Dont so much mind the deals behind the scene but we whould at least here it from them once it becomes public. They shouldn't have to reply to a forum post to explain what has happened.

Exactly.  They have admins...why aren't they reporting this first?

« on: September 22, 2006, 10:46 »
Yeah with IS I feel like I'm rolling the dice to submit anything to them. You notice it when you shoot a horizontal and vertical shot of the same subject, some gear, some settings, same jpeg compression and one goes through the other is rejected for whatever reason. I feel my work gets a much fairer review from SS, SX, DT, FO, LO, and so on. IS for me, is the best for sales though.

But going back to CJPhoto's earlier point...I agree. I think Getty put the pressure on iStock to make recent changes. We pay them 80% of our earnings and they don't have the courtesy to let us know this was coming down. It makes me wonder what else is in the works that they are going to spring on us next.

Yeah, for some time now I've been amazed at the rah-rah crowd and their "iStock can do no wrong" comments. The * up is an embarrassment. That you have to go through your images (for some folks in the hundreds) to fix a problem iStock created, and that somehow this is a fine thing...I don't get it.

It is cool that IS tries to inovate and upgrade things but this not the way to go about it. They do this a lot though. Come up with something new and then surprise it on you.

Okay, if I forget or loose my grad neutral density filter, I do the following in Photoshop:

1. Duplicate layer

2. Select quick mask

3. Select gradient tool (set from solid to transparent)

4. Place the lasso over the affected area.

5. Exit quick mask.

6. Select the curves tool to darken the area.

What I like about this is that it gives you a feathered edge, so trees, buildings and other objects aren't effected when you bring the sky back in line.

Best,

It's too bad that iStock doesn't look at the sales records for this type of imagery.  Oh well, their call and their loss.  At least there are other sites you can upload to. (So long as you don't go exclusive anywhere.)

« on: September 11, 2006, 10:43 »
I've had several pay outs at iStock, all in around 24 hours. Except, for my last payment I got last week. It took about 4 days. I contacted support in the middle of this and was told they were having trouble with transfering the money and to wait a few more days. Finally, it went through. Hopefully, they've fixed the problems and it'll be quicker for you.

I don't mind waiting to get to the $100.  What I hate is the way StockXPert does it.  They apparently don't have a verified PayPal account.  It took about 4 days for the payment to clear.  Then when it did, PayPal charged me $3.27 for the transaction.  I need to contact them all and see what that was about.  I thought that was the whole point of waiting to get to the $100 amount--so you wouldn't get charged like that.  Maybe I clicked the wrong check box or something.

It was slow a few months ago but seems to have picked up for me once I got past July.  But that was true for a lot of the sites I'm on.  Ebbs and flows...

Gosh, what a conspiratorial bunch!  :)   I kid...

With all of the conflicts of interest at IS, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the "stars" won the big prize.   Just look at the photo that was recognized at the 400k, goal.  One of those artsy monochrome shots.  Yep, submitted by an Exclusive.
