Photography Equipment / Re: best paint for photo studio ?

Grey is a good neutral idea but white walls with repositionable black flats is more useful.  No colour contamination and you can turn a light around to bounce a little fill here and there as needed.

Almost more interesting, he/she has only ONE theme in their portfolio.  But it has almost 570,000 downloads.

I wonder why just one theme?  So that he can focus ALL his attention to it?  It must be very well maintained, over 22k reviews with 4.7 rating!

Adobe Stock / Re: Adobe Terms

I don't think Canada withholds  (and note the word "think", I'm not sure).  They are probably doing non-U.S. photographers a service by paying through a Canadian company.  Remember that the IRS didn't get the bright idea to withhold until sometime in the last few years/decade.  [Question - does Canstock withhold, they are Canadian and did the original Istock withhold?]

But.... they do have to issue documents to Canadian residents.  Has anyone received those?

AND - if this contract went into effect on that date (without looking it up June 2018)..... they should not have collected taxes on International photographers since that date.  Some non-treaty countries had 20- 30 - 40% withholding rates!  If that's what I understand from above, and the contract was retroactive, Adobe better set it right.

And 9.1.  As a Canadian - has this always been the case?  Does a Canadian Company pay me and how do I receive a T-5?

Payment has been from Adobe Canada for the past couple of years.  I'm registered for HST in Canada, and I suspect that I should be collecting HST from them.  I wrote to them last year to ask about it, but they never responded.

I'm in a GST Province and I know HST is somehow the same but somehow different, but if I invoice Adobe (Canada) I would add GST.  But when it's collecting royalties, I believe this is exempt.  (I am not purchasing a good or a service from them but collecting a royalty).  They would collect GST from Canadian Buyers though.

BUT they are lawfully required to give T-5's, but I am not sure it follows the same deadline of Feb 28 like T-4's.

I did have this conversation with a long gone small Canadian stock company, they asked for invoices through Paypal to collect your percentage - they probably weren't big enough for mass pay and didn't want to incur extra fees.  But they were pretty shocked to be asked that.

Signing onto Adobe today and I'm asked to agree to terms.  Anyone know if something has changed or is this something that wasn't agreed to with the Fotolia/Adobe merge?

Is 62. new?  I thought I could pull the plug at any time and no waiting period.

Image Sleuth / Re: Etsy is the absolute worst
« on: April 02, 2019, 14:41 »
I hate sending just cash to a kid's birthday party so for a last minute party  a couple weeks ago I bought a quick svg on Etsy to cut t-shirt vinyl and include a heat pressed t-shirt.

I'm certainly not an expert with iDesignR software for my Roland cutter.  The edges around the svg looked a bit jagged, but I decided it would look smooth enough for a t-shirt.  I sent the image to print, and surprize, a huge letter C cuts out across it - which I couldn't see because it was white against the white background (discovered by adding a shadow).  I assumed it was fragments left from removing a copyright symbol.

I contacted Etsy but they told me I had to take it up with Paypal and that they basically have nothing to do with it.  And the file is still for sale.

Up until this point I have purchased dozens of items off Etsy.  Some shipped raw goods, but almost exclusively sewing patterns by indie designers for dance and athletic wear.  This experience and Etsy's lack of responsibility have really upset me.  Most pattern designers use multiple outlets, but liked Etsy because it charged less fees to them than Craftsy (which is now Blueprint and I don't know their fees).  I guarantee you - I will make sure I don't have to purchase anything on that platform unless I can't find it elsewhere or validate they are legit.  (Most of these designers have a large social footprint and active in same groups I am).

The sad thing is, the purchase in question was for around $3.  I know I'm just one person and I don't matter one bit to Etsy, I certainly won't recommend them again.

Adobe takes what feels like an eternity to load compared to the rest.

Reality check.  I just timed it and it was only 8 seconds.   But it still felt like an eternity.  How can 8 seconds feel like forever when you are checking numbers?

33
Site looks really great, however I did only one keyword search for dance and I got cinnamon sticks, a guitar fretboard, road signs and a blurry nightclub.  The last one likely has someone dancing in it.  ;)

Isn't the license for one end user?  Is it different than making a commissioned print for a client?  Couldn't he sell it and then purchase all the photos again if he finds a second user and still be legal?

Video Equipment / Sofware / Technique / Footage help for tonight.
« on: December 05, 2018, 16:35 »
Okay friends.  I write disclosing what will be obvious.  I DO NOT SHOOT FOOTAGE.

Backstory, my daughter (14) is dancing at a concert tonight for a new artist who happens to be blinded when his school was bombed in a war.  This has made us extra sympathetic to him and understand that he just needs a different level of help that the rest of us do.

I told him I would take some shots at the show (complimentary) so he would have the best "half dozen" for his package.  I even said I could take some footage at rehearsal so the dancers could link it up on social media where quality, size and expectations would be at a lower standard.  I was basically thinking with my phone.

I know what it is like to be an artist, I've produced plays with a ten cent budget, begged & borrowed with gratitude.

So.... we have already had this conversation:  "You don't send a dentist to remove your appendix.  You don't send portrait artist to film your concert" - he knew my feeling about that, but last night he begs me to bring my gear so that his friend that works in tv can shoot the concert.  Awkward.  I am sympathetic to him and genuinely want to help, but man oh man - I can't make a living if my gear takes a walk.  I tell him he has to rent video gear for the guy.  I tell him I'm not giving someone else my camera, no way.  Then I realize maybe old body.....   (but later realize that the body isn't that important my freakin lenses sure are.)  I tell him the camera guy MUST call me.  Finally calls a bit ago.  Just as astonished as I but willing to do what he can.  He also wanted to rent gear and they are over budget.

So, DSLRs are a new game to him.  He's bringing a laptop to dump the cards (frequently!)  I only have one 128 Gb and the rest are 32.

- No mike (overdubbing the footage anyway)
- No gimbal or steady cam
- Limited memory with writing speeds of 90 to 160
- Yes Tripod
- Yes monopod
- Yes 15-55 2.8
- Yes 65 1.8
- Yes 70-200 2.8
- Yes 50 1.8
- Yes Sigma 50-500 4-6.3

Body D7000  Sure
Body D810 (maybe if I am leashed to it)

The Sigma and D7000 are NEVER EVER used and should be put up for sale.  I have little attachment to them except for purpose of D7000 as a backup.

Anyone have any kind of advice?

- wont' need any filters - polarizer, nd ?

- which lens (I want to limit this to one or 2)

- Do I just set to Auto and hope for the best?  I don't know what a cameraman can do with a slr when he's trained for tv video

- Usually my cameras sit in RAW mode.   No clue what I set to.

-  Will they be able to edit this footage with the software a real videographer uses?

- Which lens?  The video guy asked for zoom.

If I remember the D7000, was the focus fixed maybe or something that was pretty flawed?

D810 will track focus won't it?

I leave for the venue in a couple hours.   Hopefully we can figure anything out during the hour sound check.  Like I said awkward.  I feel like my phone would be a better option, it really does take acceptable video if not zoomed in and you don't touch the screen after you set the exposure.

Really, thanks.  If someone has a second to put me a bit more at ease.   I appreciate any tidbit of help you can throw at me.

Love ya, Lorraine

General Stock Discussion / Re: November Sales
« on: November 30, 2018, 12:24 »
I'm not sure what minimum payout on SS,  I've never not made payout but I'm guessing this may be the month!  Jeeze,  I made more with 14 photos on my first half month at SS than I did this last month.

The famous "Money isn't going to be what makes us happy" incident.  If it wasn't the worst, it was certainly the most quoted/memorable (in a PTSD sorta way).

Flickr / Re: Flickr sold to SmugMug
« on: April 26, 2018, 10:46 »
I did have Smugmug years ago but it wasn't very international photographer friendly.  They charged a monthly fee as well as a cut on sales.  Prints shipped from the U.S. and then a few years back when the IRS got involved they were going to withhold taxes from non-residents.  These aren't royalties, so they were not exempt - they are photographer to client sales so the U.S. wanted their cut for doing business on a U.S. based platform - even if the buyer-seller were both doing the transaction in another country.

42MP shot is still worth 38 cents on SS and 2 cents on IS.  I'm too bitter/jaded/resentful to give them big beautiful files.

Could this be the reason for their spectacular crash?
https://www.law360.com/articles/1027583/stock-photo-co-says-google-search-shuts-out-non-partners

"Dreamstime said its troubles started in the second half of 2015, when Google allegedly used its monopoly power in online search advertising to boost up Shutterfly while bumping down other stock photo sellers. In February 2018, Google struck a similar deal with Getty Images, and Dreamstime said its expecting more of the alleged algorithm changes to occur, pushing it further into search result oblivion, according to the suit."

(Question - I wonder when the article refers to Shutterstock if they mean Shutterfly?)

Their dates kinda jive with my own decline.  And SS did have a bump for me starting in about May 2015.

General Stock Discussion / Re: ebook cover license question
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:28 »
My son is on a book about serial killers (shucks... so proud LOL).  Bigstock gave them my contact information (unless it's in my profile, I don't know) and they called for special permission from "the model's parents".  I wrote up a little contract for 10000 copies. I'd suggest you contact her directly to request permission from the actual parent and then do a side deal with her.

Their little experiment may be fixed, but they forgot to click my EL boxes.  Don't you have to do it one at a time on this site?

The sports photographers are gaga over the smart select upgrade (I think it might have a new fancy name) for knocking out extractions.  I'm thinking it might be time to upgrade from CS5...

Caveat:   those guys recommend to backup all plugins and brushes etc. because chances are quite high you will lose them with the update.

I can remember at some point being p*ssed about a third party deal and turning something off but I don't ever remember turning off EL's.  It looks like my four newest are still turned on, but after a random search I can't find any type of EL enabled in the rest.

General - Top Sites / Re: DT exclusive - advice wanted
« on: December 20, 2017, 10:58 »
As a non-exclulsive - my earnings are down around 95% the past two months.  In fact, last month it was very close to being more than 100% due to refunds.  Times are good.  Times are bad.  I don't think exclusivity anywhere is a good idea, even if you start with a mutually beneficial contract, each agency changes it whenever they want to buy a new fleet of Mercedes.
