Photo Critique / Re: Confused about font use
« on: October 05, 2012, 15:13 »
I'd stay away from personal use only fonts since the creator most likely wouldn't want to find their fonts being used in projects that you're selling for commercial use.

My favorite free front site is www.fontsquirrel.com since they put in a little extra effort in making sure their fonts are free for commercial use.  Takes a lot of the headache out of it for me though I do check the readme files that come with them just in case.

So long as you don't make any other prints in the same size and paper you should be fine.  You can do the same image in two different sizes and it'll be two different LE print series.  The signature and print number are important as well.

New Sites - General / Re: Anyone Selling on Colourbox?
« on: September 18, 2012, 15:14 »
Coming from a just out of college experience (in America),  students are told they are allowed to use any image they like in a school project so long as it is kept in the school setting and isn't published for sale anywhere.  My professors claimed it was alright to use images directly off of Google searches that since the use of the images fell under Educational use.   I always felt uneasy about it and tried to use my own images whenever possible.  I understand the need for images to learn how to use the design programs, but I felt it also encouraged using any image at all with or without permission even after the education was over.

They didn't exactly explain it very well until I asked in one of my classes about how we as professional designers should find images in the real world and suggested that they explain what microstock was to the rest of the students.  Many of them had never heard of it and probably would not have until they started working at a company somewhere.  After that I noticed that one of my professors started mentioning what stock and microstock is and how to use it once we (students) have graduated.

I hope this is different at other, larger schools.

I do understand where Colourbox is coming from in offering these types of downloads.  I'm not sure how I feel about trying to upload my illustrations to a company that advertises free educational/non-commercial use because I'm sure there are people who would dishonestly take advantage of those downloads. There are dishonest people everywhere and this is just another easy outlet for them to use.   At least when I was a student most images I used still had watermarks on them and I knew I couldn't use them for real world applications unless I bought them or got written permission for its use.

I will tell you the same thing I told her about micro - be careful or it will kill your creativity.  Either you continue to produce creative work that you are proud of, but makes very little money in microstock, or you begin tailoring your work to the (creatively limited) microstock market.

When I started uploading to microstock, I was passionate about photography and viewed it a wonderful creative outlet.  Now, after 7 years doing this full time, it just feels like a job.  I almost NEVER pick up a camera if I'm not working.  Maybe it's different for illustrators...

I want to get into microstock as well but I'm pretty sure I'm going to refuse to by boxed in, but can you think of any alternatives to microstock? Do Microstock photos lend well to fine art photography?

Print on Demand sites like redbubble, zazzle or artflakes are probably better for the fine art photography than microstock,  the problem with those sites is that you need to reach out and find your audience for yourself otherwise your work drowns in a sea of thousands of other highly talented artists.

I'll have to do a bit more research to figure out exactly what kind of flower it was,  unfortunately it looks like dreamstime doesn't allow the phrase keywording.   Thanks again for all your help!

Thank you both for the advice and insights!

JPSDK thanks so much for pointing out my mistake on the butterfly, I would have gone on forever thinking it was an admiral butterfly,  I'll get to changing it right away.  I'll also keep my eyes and ears open for any chances to keep improving.

Thanks for sharing your experience and the warning Lisa, I'll certainly keep it in mind as I progress with my photography and illustrations.

Hi there!

I just signed up for this forum a few days ago but I've been reading through a lot of it already.
I'm 23 years old, just graduated college with degrees in Fine art and Multimedia Design.  I live in South Dakota and I am getting ready to start to begin applying for jobs.

I go by Starsania most places online unless by some mishap in registration where I also go by Starzipan.

I sort of looked into microstock a few years ago,  I haven't sold/uploaded a lot though. My focus was mostly on school and I never really pushed the photography as far as I should have.  I figure most my photography is probably better suited for fine art prints and POD anyway.

I am beginning to build up an illustration portfolio.  I also do not have a whole lot in my portfolio yet but I have to start somewhere!

These are my portfolios so far.  (I excluded ones I felt are pretty worthless to even show off to people)

I also have another side hobby,  I remake old jewelry such as pins and earrings into rings.

Any thoughts on what I have so far or hellos from members here are appreciated!

I like the elongated face better but his eyes seem to be looking more at the sky than straight forward.

The round headed guy seems to be looking more straight forward but something about his face doesn't quite jive well with me.  It might be the use of more gradients in his face than the elongated one.
