Hey everybody! I've finally decided to make my own symbiostock site. The frustration came when bluehost asked for USD 160 at once -- they are asking for the whole amount and I want to be able to make monthly payments for hosting as the sum is more than half of what I make from microstock per month. Any suggestions? Thank you in advance.

Alamy.com / Initial submission question
« on: July 28, 2013, 09:25 »
Hello everybody! I've submitted my first four images to Alamy. I have two questions - do I need to keyword them or include a model release? Thank you in advance.

Dear IS and SS (and especially the former) please stop accepting EVERYTHING. It is disheartening for photographers to do their best when you accept a series of 20 images of the same author and subject and good quality images get buried.
SS - over 120,00 images during the last week alone? This is too much.
IS, I am seeing a lot of images with questionable quality being accepted. Some exclusives can't even keep up with the numbers competition. People with beautiful portfolios and 2000 images over six years can't upload 200 images per week as the quality of their portfolio will suffer.

You are creating an unhealthy competition with a focus on quantity over quality (and the falling sales stemming from that). That is why specialised agencies like Stocksy will do better as their quality control is still very high. Do something now. Please.

Nikon / Upgrading D80 to D5100
« on: April 25, 2013, 22:43 »
Hi guys. I am thinking about upgrading my 10mp D80 to D5100 as the latter is 545 USD right now (D7000, D5200 and D7100 are still too expensive). I want more resolution and video capabilities. I have two old lenses without an autofocus motor but will use them with manual focus. The swivel screen will be really useful as I do lots of macro shots. 16mp will also get me larger files. My two questions are -- how's the quality of the picture - I am asking you guys with D5100 and D7000 (the sensors are the same). My second question is -- is the video quality good enough for microstock? A friend of mine takes videos with his Canon 550D but the bitrate there is double the D5100. Thank you in advance, all opinions are welcome.

Stocksy / Re: Stocksy - Are You Curious? Response?

I am curious.. have you noticed that they want to see portfolios on non-microstock sites? What did you send them? Portfolios on microstock sites or 500px/flickr?

Reassuring. A person who knows how to use his words in this way can really influence others. I really pictured the scene. Thank you.

Shutterstock.com / SS illustrations review delay
« on: January 26, 2013, 07:46 »
Hello everybody  :). Is it normal for illustrations to wait to be reviewed for more than a week now? My photos uploaded together with the illustrations were already reviewed. Thank you in advance.

Please elaborate on these "obscure derivates". I also just got accepted there. Their image review process is pretty slow.

vannphoto, thank you for your reply :). I also have about 40 downloads from the beginning of January so I am happy. Just the last few days were slower compared with the beginning of the month. I was searching for a pattern. Your portfolio is great and images with people are generally downloaded more often. Keep up the good work! :)

Looking at those numbers.. I wish I knew about microstock back in 2005...

You've relied on very simple and few images for too long. It amazes me that such portfolio can bring so much money. Stay exclusive. Many of your most downloaded files will probably not going to be accepted elsewhere nowadays.

Edit: Okay, they will be accepted but will not going to get many downloads (and for less money).

With a port of almost 5,000, you should get much more consistent downloads and not be affected by seasonal trends :). But having under 200 images mostly of macro and nature does not help :).

Thank you. Just got my first sale for the day.. I should stop refreshing the earnings page so often.. more often I am disappointed but that's what happens when you have high hopes.

General Stock Discussion / SS Jan/Feb trends

Hello everybody. I am relatively new to SS with a portfolio of some 180 files. Have you noticed a slowdown during the last one or two days? Also, is January generally a slow month and when is demand expected to pick up again? Thank you.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: iStock's Alexa Rank continues to drop
« on: December 22, 2012, 03:32 »
I usually do not comment much on forums but.. you people are crazy. Have you any idea how much quality content there's is on iStock? If those exclusives decide to transfer their portfolio to SS your earnings will suffer. Big time. It's just that the content on iStock is of higher quality as a whole. I know how you'll respond to that but it is the truth. You just have to hope that iStock will reclaim its previous position. It would be better for everybody.

Another thing - I did not expect all those negative words here -- those people are your colleagues and are too counting on microstock income to feed their families. I thought that photographers, as artists, will be better people, but no -- it is the usual gloating.
