General Stock Discussion / Re: Accepted into ImageBrief« on: January 22, 2015, 00:49 »
Actually they do RF now, but they don't want anything that's been submitted to microstock.
I've had 2 images licensed (RM), to a travel agency. Many more short-listed but either I don't win or they close with nothing bought. I ignore most book covers and anything really vague (eg "Something that shows speed, or the future, the concept of time...", you can almost see the hands waving in the air) unless an image jumps into my head as soon as I read it. The briefs are definitely interesting and inspiring reading. 29

General Stock Discussion / Re: Online Backup - whos using what and why?« on: December 17, 2014, 21:06 »
I use Crashplan, as there's no limitations on storage space so I just set it and forget it. My household uses it, currently it's backing up one desktop and two laptops for the same price. It's easy to pause or put the backups to sleep for a certain amount of time if eg you've just uploaded a bunch of photos from your camera and want to delete the crap first.
More importantly, as I found out when my desktop imploded (where all my photos are kept - on disks in a RAID 10 to be fair but the RAID failed also), it's really easy to restore from. 31
Print on Demand Forum / Re: Got Curated - share your pix here too!« on: December 03, 2014, 18:53 »
There were explanations of the curation and acceptance process in another long thread on here, which is where I got my understanding of the process from, and my experience has matched the expectations that they've set (though perhaps not in sales, but I haven't uploaded as much as I'd like to have by now as well). They're extremely good at replying to support questions too, so if you're in doubt you could just ask them directly.
Anyway, back on topic, another of mine was curated on the front page today http://crated.com/art/19833/story-bridge-traffic-by-silkenphotography. So far I have a few extra people "collecting" it, but no sales. 32

General Photography Discussion / Where to create my photography website?« on: November 07, 2014, 20:27 »
I've been lax and it's really about time I put together my own photography website and gallery.
I work in IT and I'm perfectly comfortable maintaining a self-hosted website, however I'm no web designer and practically I think it'd make more sense for me to start with something on Wordpress or similar where I don't need to spend days setting up, and I can choose from an existing layout and customise from there rather than have to design something from scratch. I don't mind paying for this. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or ones to avoid for that matter! 35
Alamy.com / Re: What would you like to see in the new manage images / upload process?« on: November 07, 2014, 20:12 »
- Change from a character limit to a keyword limit, with keywords being comma separated so multiple word keywords count as one.
- Allow more keywords while editing, with a red star/outline/whatever to show that we can't save until we're under the limit. It's much easier to pick and choose what we do and don't want to keep when all the info is in the edit box to start with (see e.g. FAA's editing. Or Crated's). - I can see a need for tiered keywords, but can it be two rather than three, and make it easy to select which ones are "essentials" with something similar to Zazzle's "power" keywords where you click on the keyword to toggle if a keyword is a "power" one or not. The first 10 added are automatically top tier, but if you're a Lightroom user it's so easy to change. Thanks for listening. 36

Here is a definition of "beautiful", from over 25 countries - Woman sent a photo of herself to 40 photographers with one Photoshop request: "Make me beautiful". The variation is fascinating... and shows why it's a useless keyword http://www.estherhonig.com/#!before--after-/cvkn

But as I generally don't shoot people I'm not really in a position to take advantage of it. So for those of you who do, here's a niche for you to consider.
Feminism: http://www.womenyoushouldknow.net/feminism-looks-like-according-stock-photos/ And if anyone here took those photos, please re-evaluate (or research!) what feminism means before applying that keyword to your image. Female model does not = feminism! ![]() 39
Photography Equipment / Re: Chalk and Cheese - Olympus E-M1 vs Canon 7DmII vs ?« on: September 20, 2014, 18:29 »
Ooh I didn't know about Metabones, thanks Zeus and Paulie. That definitely makes a change interesting.
Tror: it's exactly the "What about in five years" that makes me wary of the 7DmII. Things like a touchscreen are called gimmicks by some by are actually really useful. I've enjoyed using the 7D autofocus so that side of things does tempt me, but the 7DmII is going to look and feel dated in about ... hmmm... now. PaulieWalnuts: Thanks for the recs, I'll check the Sony out. (P.S. always loved your name and icon!) 40
Photography Equipment / Re: Chalk and Cheese - Olympus E-M1 vs Canon 7DmII vs ?« on: September 19, 2014, 22:09 »
Maybe "newcomer" is the wrong word. I know all these companies have been around for ages, but it seems that it's only been relatively recently that they've been taken seriously by pro photographers. I need a better word to mean "not Canon or Nikon old-school DLSRs".
I've played with the Fuji XT-1, it's quite nice. I don't like the aperture being around the lens however, even though I've had the same on the x100s for over a year somehow I'm still not used to it. I haven't totally written it off as an option though. Do you reckon the Fuji XT-1 stacks up well enough? 41
Photography Equipment / Chalk and Cheese - Olympus E-M1 vs Canon 7DmII vs ?« on: September 19, 2014, 19:17 »
I primarily shoot landscapes and wildlife. I currently have a Canon 7D which I'm increasingly getting fed up with, and a Fujifilm x100s which I love and carry with me every day. I want to replace the 7D with another interchangeable lens system, but I'm torn. I always thought my next camera would be a full-frame but I want more fps than the 6D and I can't afford the 5DmIII and upwards.
My x100s has given me a taste for what some of these newcomers are capable of. Focus peaking! I friggin love that. Small and light - why carry around a beast? A typical photography day for me starts with me standing still for hours following by a lot of walking around trying to capture the local wildlife - we get a lot of birds around here especially - so I like the 7D's versatility there. The 7DmII is even heavier and has nothing that exciting apart from the auto-focus system. Do I ditch Canon entirely and go with a newcomer? My research a couple of months ago led me to the Olympus E-M1 but I really should have another look at what's out there. Has anyone else done similar already? 42
Print on Demand Forum / Crated Discount - how it should be done« on: September 19, 2014, 18:43 »
Crated are running a special offer for all customers at the moment, $10 off any print. What's really nice is that they're not taking this discount out of contributors' pockets, but taking the hit themselves. Refreshing change.

Print on Demand Forum / Re: RedBubble« on: September 19, 2014, 18:40 »
Handful of sales in two years, but they're a pain to upload to as they don't read IPTC. Apparently that's deliberate to stop people mass uploading every snap on their harddrive, but there are better ways to prevent that (even FAA is theorectically better on that score, although the flakiness of their upload system negates that).

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Will you stay with iStock after the 9/2/14 change or start pulling out?« on: September 08, 2014, 19:39 »
Buyers will use up their credits in the next week or so while they're worth more. Then, come the 15th, they won't have any iStock credits. They won't have anything tying them to iStock. If I was a customer thinking about changing my main source of stock photos, the 15th would be the day to do it.

General Stock Discussion / Re: Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr« on: July 18, 2014, 07:56 »It's not just emails, it's real life too. I was called up 2 days before new years eve by a promoter. They were launching a new drink. They had sponsored a whole new year's eve party, had paid hostesses lined up for the evening to work the floor. She wanted a photographer from 9 pm and more or less the whole night. And her budget was less than 100 euro for the photographer! But the photographer would of course 'be at the party' and get free drinks, i.e. this is a fun event for you to hang at! You should have gone, drunk as much of the free drink as you could manage, taken plenty of photos and sent them in with the comment, "This is what paying in booze gets you" ![]() 50
