Any particular reasons for "yes" or "no", guys and girls? Now your conversation looks childish like: - Yes, yes, yes! - No, no, no!

Ok, they tell they want to pay more to us (authors). In this case they could just raise the royalty % from the current 18% to, let's say, 25%. Simple and easy to implement (just change 1 number in their system)! But ... instead they create a sophisticated system including "subscription utilization" etc. Why? I guess they are trying to fool us.

How do you see the description of that kickstarter project? "There is an existing software and the price is affordable. But we want to gather $50k to create a new one." Would you support this sort of a project?

Of course, submitting and categorizing is time consuming, but that can't be automated, uploading can be.
There is StockSubmitter software. It can submit files after their uploading. For better results the user should specify the categories for the agencies, however the program can suggest them itself too. So, it is possible to automate submitting or, at least, make it less painful. Also there was Octopus Microstock software with the same features, but it is not updated for a couple of years. Maybe there is some other submitting tools too.

Of course this largely depends on the amount of photos, agencies and your available bandwidth and internet stability. Many of our users are now saving them tens of thousands of manual file uploads by FTP per month and they're pretty happy about it.
So, your users are from those countries with unstable and slow Internet connection with paid and limited monthly bandwidth. Ok, now I understand.

How do you get the number of sales?

rjung, uploading to multiple agencies is not a problem at all even with a free FileZilla FTP client. The time consuming task is submitting to those agencies. You need to select categories (most of stocks), select licenses (DreamsTime, Alamy, ...), select image type (for example, "illustration yes/no" at Shutterstock), and lots of other things (like "extended license price at AdobeStock"). Are you going to add automatic (or semi-automatic) submitting features to your software? Or you are going to leave it at the same level with free FTP clients?

100+!
There are more than 20'000 artists at microstocks (photographers, graphic designers, videographers). 100 is less than 0.5% of contributors. Why did I tell that? Because of your " !" and " " BTW. I signed the petition yesterday.

Hi Symbiostock Official,
There are 2 stages of the submit process on most of the microstock websites: 1. Upload (by FTP or microstock website). 2. Submit (we select categories, upload property or model release and specify some additonal parameters).
Can Symbiostock Submitter submit files at all? Or it is able to upload files by FTP only?
I read the description of Symbiostock Submitter and it seems to me that it is like FileZill (or other free FTP client) in terms of picture uploading.

... do you believe in your heart, that you will succeed in getting more money by putting your signature under a petition? ... Why not try?! If you do nothing (do not sign the petition) the result is predictable (and not acceptable). If you do something it may become better. Sometimes we must send a message to microstock agencies just to remind them we exist and we are real people, not just the numbers.

This adds value to you as a photographer. How do you convert that value to some cash?

... But if you know you've been published in that magazine, then you can tell your potential customers that you've been published in this same magazine, which gives you value, as a Photographer! That's it! ... First of all, your software can not find pictures published in magazines or on packaging. The magazine should have all the pages available online, otherwise your software will look at their cover page only. Someone should make a photo of the packaging and upload it to come website (social network maybe) to make it searchable. Moreover, it should be well lit and with right angle (front view) and not covered (overlaped) by some item. So, the software can find only a few, maybe 0.01% of the packagings and magazines. But ok, let's say you have found some magazine with your photo. What are the next steps? Will you find contact details of that magazine editor, phone them and ask to buy more your photos? Will you contact the company who placed your vector illustration to their chocolate bar packaging and ask them to buy more your 'vectors'? How are you going to make any profit? Not just satisfy your ego, but make some $?

... Twenty years later Shutterstock will do well to learn that lesson or its customers will search elsewhere also. I look at the antiquated software of SS (search, map breaking, uploads failing, outages) and wonder firstly how it can describe itself as a technology company ... Someone here said there are 300 IT specialists working for SS. Are they all idiots? I do not think so. If they (IT engineers) do not fix it they just do not have an order from their CEO.

Picmatch is a tool to build your client list ... Why? Why do we need to build the list? What is the profit or benefit?

What I need is an app which finds my pictures at non-microstock websites and if the picture is used in illegal way it sends DMCA request (fills the form and ask me to confirm before sending) and if the website does not remove the picture it sends DMCA to web hosting provider of that website and to Google (to remove the site from search results). This app should detect if the website is an API partner of microstocks or not. It should know if the website owner purchased the picture legally or not. It should know where the image should be purchased with an extended license. It should know that some microstocks allow to show pics for free for credits (you write "image from SS or Getty" and it is legal). It should have a built-in list of "warez" websites. And there are lots of wishes what should it do automatically or with "1 click approval".
If the program wants me to do lots of work (consider if the site is legal API partner or not, etc.) I won't pay a penny for that program. Period.

One look at the SS offering these days would sound a few alarm bells ... thousands of brands of baked beans spread all over the store often stacked in the wrong place and labelled as something different. You don't get the idea. The Unique Selling Proposition of ShutterStock now is the bean tins with labels like "beans beans beans beans beans beans beans beans beans beans beans". Where every single bean in that tin is counted and mentioned on the label.

DesignBold, At https://www.designbold.com/contributor you write: "Once your layout is published, it will continue to earn credits every time it gets used." But what is the price, royalty? Let's say I register and create a layout and you sell it. How much $ do I get?

At Etsy you pay $0.2 for an uploaded item. To upload 1000 photos you'll pay $200. And 3 months later you have to renew them (to pay $200 again). Try to make it profitable. I am sure there must be some tricks to make it cheaper, but you need to find them. Also, as you may know, Etsy won't try to find buyers for you, you must promote you shop via social networks etc., it is a job.

ShadySue, thanks. Yes, it is a pitiful thin black bar. iStock website is so cumbersome and complicated, it is difficult to find and understand anything.

Those are probably some Getty earnings, they're happening every month....0,01$-0,06$...
So, they sell the pics at a MacroStock (Getty) for something like $500 and pay us a royalty of $0.02 ?! I just opened few pics at Getty and got this message: "Buy this photo at 485.00 GBP. Or just 400.00 with an UltraPack. Save Now". 400.00 GBP = $500 USD

You get paid in $ on every other agency. At least at Fotolia I'm not loosing money when converting $ into .... Paypal takes around 4% for the currency conversion. Banks take 1% to 3% usually. Do you prefer to pay 17% (now and possibly more when GBP goes lower) at Fotolia for it?

SS pays $0.25 to the newcomers and $0.38 to the old contributors. It is 52% more profitable to sell newbie's pics. Now tell me that there is no reason to show newbie's pics higher in search results.
No, they (at SS) are not "Robin Hoods", they do not pay for nothing from their pockets. (By the way, Robin Hood also did not pay from his pockets, as far as I know British folklore.) They just show newbie's pics to the customers more often so those pics have more chances to be sold.

ShadySue, thank you for your answer. Does "iS" mean "iStock"? Did anybody ever paid for such an audit at iStock? Maybe at any other agency?

Ok, let's think about another thing: How can contributors control the honesty of a Microstock agency? Amount of sales, the sale price, sales via partners, offline sales, etc.
Is there any legal way like an audit or so?

... If some legal judgement ruled in favour of contributors from one country, the agencies could choose to disallow contributors from that country. ... I thought about that too. But, can they break the contract with existing contributors? They can write: "We do not accept UK contributors any more." (and state some "valid reason"), but what about existing contributors? Just close their accounts?
