Yes you are right it is of course more complicated that's why every agency interprets it differently and there is no yes or no which is why I said its the agency's call

Well, all I know is that every agency I have ever been with over the past 20 years has required a property release for pet pics.

Pets are considered to be personal property so a release is needed.

Newbie Discussion / Re: A question about flowers..
« on: January 16, 2016, 12:31 »
Well, haven't noticed this. Many popular images are attributed like "Flower" or "Blue flowers". It seems to be enough

How do you know it's 'enough'?  There's no way of tracking sales that you may be missing by not identifying the flower.  So you really can't say it's 'enough' unless you are happy with your sales and don't really care if there could be more.

ID it if you can as there may be some discerning buyers looking for a particular species or variety.

hi! How is the site working at the moment ? does it make any sense to upload

Things are going great.  You need to apply and get accepted before you can upload....worth a try.

Seriously?  If I got any sales, I'd be surprised.  So I was surprised to get a Stocksy sale.

Ditto....about fell out of my chair when I saw mine come in.

Stocksy.

Rejects, as long as they aren't similars, are kept for self-marketing.

Good to hear that you guys are selling images on Stocksy, by the look of it though you are only selling each image once. Yes you get a couple of hundred dollars, but unless that images sells many more times how will it cover your ROI, if you shot a model and had to hire equipment or a studio. Does not really matter that you got a couple of hundred dollars for a one off sale infact if you look at it like that it is a bit of a rip off.
I should think thet stocksy makes you exclusive and certainly the client will want exclusivity.

Some sell once (so far), some sell multiple times, some haven't sold, yet.  Just like any other agency.  However, 33 cents per sale doesn't happen at Stocksy.  Let's just say the investment in a shoot is well worth it.

Stocksy / Re: Applying to Stocksy - some help needed please
« on: November 12, 2015, 10:50 »
What others have submitted may not be very helpful to you.  Stocksy is looking to fill gaps in their collection which means they could be looking for something that others have not submitted.

My advice is to just be yourself.  If you have a niche then submit primarily that subject matter but show the breadth of your work in your submission.  Stocksy does an extensive review of prospective contributors so they will be looking at the scope of your work beyond that contained in your submission whether it be your website, Flikr, etc

I honestly can't remember how many images I initially submitted.  If that number isn't in their guidelines I would suggest 15-20 images with links to whatever else you have out there.

Sean has more insight than I do in this process so hopefully he will chime in.

Good luck!

I put my images where I thought they could earn the greatest return which meant leaving microstock....selling for pennies never felt 'right' for me considering time and $ invested whether the image sold once or a hundred times....best decision I've made in a long time.  I'm making far fewer sales today but considerably more money and  see that doing nothing but getting better over the long run.

And don't discount self-marketing.  Calendars, greeting cards, magazines, the list goes on.  It's a tough nut to crack but once you get established with particular companies or publishers or corporations it can be very rewarding.

There are good alternatives to microstock.  Jumping ship doesn't have to mean the end of your photography income.

Of course, your mileage may vary.... ;)

Just out of curiosity, for those of you who are Stocksy photographers, what is your image acceptance rate? I have images with the micros and separately with Getty and my acceptance with the micros has always been very good. Acceptance of images with Getty, via their Moments collection, very hit and miss, sometimes great, often not so much. For every ten images you send Stocksy, how many do they accept? Just average or estimate would be great.

Thanks

I'm sitting at right around 95% acceptance.....which means I'm being too selective in what I upload and not experimenting enough....tough to build a portfolio very quickly with that approach.

I'm down to Stocksy (which I don't consider microstock) and self-marketing.....left iStock a couple of years ago and Shutterstock last month.
