Newbie Discussion / Vector and Zip support on dropstock.io now!
« on: November 16, 2016, 04:58 »
Hi, we just enabled vector and zip file uploads in dropstock.io!

For those of you that don't know about it yet: With dropstock.io you sync your files once with Dropbox and we'll upload your files to all agencies you specified by FTP.

For each file type we currently support (image, eps and zip) you can enable/disable upload per agency, so you can upload eps to A, zip to B and images to A and C for example.

It's still beta and free, so please test it and let us know how it works for you!

Video is next ;)

Thanks for the site, is there a way to view the results sorted by top searches and not alphabetically?

Yes and no. It's nothing I can easily integrate into this tool unfortunately. First going to watch the demand for this tool and see where it goes from there :)

Well the basic idea is that you're in some niche already. Say you make pics from people working and their environment. So you can start with a small seed list - "office", "work", "desk", ... and get hundreds of ideas from there - and more than by just typing into fotolia search bar by hand, which will only give you ten-ish results.

But I see your point, this tool has a limited use case and there's room for better tools..... ;)

As I wrote, it's taking search queries from the autocompletion functionality from fotolia and pond5. Note there is no search volume or any other metric involved, it's just what those agencies believe their users are looking for - usually based on historic searches and their volume.

So this should give you ideas on how people might be searching in your niche and help you find new sub-niches you might want to explore. Definitely don't blindly copy/paste all that into you metadata :)

Microstock Services / keyword.io: Idea generator
« on: September 01, 2016, 11:29 »
Hi,

I run keyword.io, a website mainly targeted at SEO folks. Today I added something useful for stock photographers, too.

The basic idea is to talk to a microstock agency's search form as if typing a search term a buyer would type, but with many different variations: "KEYWORD a", KEYWORD b" and so on. The result is a set of dozens or hundreds of search queries, buyers use to find pictures to buy.

You can use this data to optimize your title, description and keywords or to get new ideas for motives in a specific niche.

The tool is free to use. Give it a try, http://www.keyword.io/tool/fotolia-longtail-finder?q=office&audience=2 will give you more than 200 search phrases for "office" stock pictures for example.

Cheers, Robert

Hey, just came across this old post. What file extensions do you use for vector files? I coded dropstock.io, so I can easily add them :)

That's why when I slot in the SD-card from my camera to my Mac it's copying the RAW photos to a folder that's synced with Dropbox, so all photos are backed immediately without me touching anything. Big fan of automating stuff as much as possible, my time is too precious (and I'm too lazy and forgetful) for backing up manually. dropstock.io just fits in nicely.

Will do! So far, tests look very promising, I might make it public next week. You can help me by keep uploading pictures (and getting more people to use it ;) ) to test upload stability. Have a good weekend!

Hi, I'm Robert, the developer behind dropstock.io

Awesome to read you like what we have built so far!

After some wrestling with the Dropbox API some technical problems which limited the file size we could handle efficiently were solved. So after testing those changes with a few thousand additional uploads we should be able to tackle bigger files (read: videos) soon :)

So far we've made 16k uploads and moved about 124GB of pictures btw \o/

As far as I understand, each agency requires different things to do after upload - set categories, submit, tag as editorial (or upload to a different folder), ... so we decided to strictly handle the uploading part only.

Even if all those tasks could be automated just with the metadata in the pictures, it would be a ridiculously big task to implement that for each and every agency out there, in most cases by logging into the agencies web sites with a fake browser, using fake mouse clicks and hoping the layout doesn't change or everything falls apart (and would require even more access to your accounts).

So we focus on one thing we can do well and which has the potential to boost productivity for many photographers, especially those with many photos and agencies or bad connections, which is moving files.

We might eventually do some more sophisticated workflows (photos got to X agencies, photos with "_editorial" got to Y agencies, videos go to Z agencies), but you'll still have to categorize and submit photos on the agencies websites.

We just try to save you from babysitting your uploads. You can edit pictures offline, move them to the Dropbox folder and next time you're online, your pictures will show up in your agencies inboxes automatically.

Oh, and you really should have offsite backups (external disk/sd cards don't count if your house burns down or broken into), especially if you earn your living with this data! dropstock.io automatically solves that for you, too :)

Hi @Pauws99

I'm Robert, the software engineer behind dropstock.io

Not sure if I got you right, once you put in your FTP credentials you don't have to come back to dropstock.io (unless you want to add more agencies or want to check on upload status of files manually).

We try to make things as safe as possible. Neither your FTP credentials nor photos ever touch a disk on our servers - we can't even write to our server's disk, which (among other safety features) also makes them very hard to hack.

But yes, there is a potential security risk. As is backing up your data to a cloud provider - or not backing them up offsite. Or as using unencrypted FTP from a public WiFi. Or loosing money from uploading fewer pictures to less agencies because of the hassle. Or leaving the house for taking new pictures.

Your call ;)
