What other nine agencies or outlets (other than DT, Tim's business cards and Zazzle) would you recommend for a wildlife photographer.

Zoonar.com has a new partner agency: Picture Alliance. For the time being they accept only animal photos for this partner.
Price categories: premium and standard, minimum resolution: 4000 px on the longer side. No microstock photos should be uploaded for this partner or they will delete your port.
Maybe it could be interesting to you. They also have other interesting partners (AGE, Photolibrary, etc). Warning: referral link included.:)

As I posted previously, we shouldn't rule out insider participation in this scam.

The question is: did the scam help IS achieve their targets for 2010?

Personally, I have no confidence in their integrity anymore, I have no confidence anymore that they even report all sales correctly (be it due to greed or due to their incompetence). This place is run by sick people.

Off Topic / Holograms at Manchester Airport

Well, this is not Star Trek yet, these holograms are 2-dimensional only and displayed on some kind of glass, but I believe in 10-12 years agencies will be selling holograms just as they sell 3D or video now.

It seems you really need to sit down for a while and teach yourself to navigate through the labyrinth

Oh boy, that place really is a maze. I never stay there long, navigating there gives me a headache. Upload, submit and get out.
If the buyers' end is also so complicated they need to simplify things if they want to be a major player in microstock.

It seems that most of their buyers are from the US. This is not good for me, most of my buyers on SS are from Europe.

256
The new site looks very good indeed.
The old, green one was a bit too 'funky' for my taste.
I hope the buyers will like the new site too.

257
There's only one solution: a new distribution model which will eliminate those parasites.
The only artists for whom microstock is sustainable in the long run are the con artists from IS, FT, etc.

Has anybody sold an iPhone/ iPad case on Zazzle?

Mousepads seem a waste of time to me, never sold one. I suppose very few people buy them these days, since modern mice do not require them. I didn't have much luck with mugs, either - they seem relatively expensive compared to traditional retailers.

I sell mostly postcards and magnets.

I had some sales with a small store. Less than I had expected, enough to keep me interested.

Indeed, it is fun to create products on Zazzle and they have quite a wide range of products.

What I don't like:
- Previews are often cr*#%%y due to their ridiculous jpg compression. It must discourage at least some potential buyers.
- Legal issues: they have products with the Eiffel tower at night or snapshots of the Belgian royal family sold as postcards. Except for US Postage they seem to have no inspections, all products go online with a delay of a few minutes.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Fraud going down at IS

I had one XXXL for $5 and an XXL for $4 (non-exlusive).

Hey, maybe it's not fraud, maybe it's a software bug or... a feature :)
The software was re-designed to boost the profits, maybe that's what it does when it's left on autopilot:)
It downloads stuff and boosts the profits ;) (at least temporarily, that is for 2010)

Wunderbar, I have read the terms and enabled Photolibrary.

BTW, what's happening with AGE? My submissions to Fotofinder and APIS are reviewed usually on the same day but those for AGE have been waiting for ages :) Is it because of the queue size at the beginning?

Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to the Zoonar crew!

Adobe Stock / Re: Any pattern behind fotolia reviews...?
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:19 »
Fotolia is different from most other sites, the queue seems to be sorted by upload date not by submission date.
If you upload and image and submit it after a week or so, usually it is inspected in a matter of minutes.

For what it's worth, today I had a sale thanks to Flickr.

The buyer found my photo on Flickr then searched my portfolios on agency websites, couldn't find it (because full-res of that photo wouldn't have been accepted anywhere) and contacted me directly.
Because it is a non-profit site I asked for 20,00 for an RF license and the buyer had no problem with that (30 would have probably been fine too). The photo on Flickr is ca. 800 px wide and with no watermark.

265
I use FileZilla FTP.
Free + it does everything I need + never had a problem = a great time saver.

What kind of software do you use with that perl module?

General Stock Discussion / Re: Microstocking in China?
« on: December 09, 2010, 16:16 »
If there are problems, are their workarounds? What would it take to make a successful living from a place like China?

I suppose knowing the Chinese (Mandarin) language would be quite helpful ;D
Workaround: hiring an interpreter ;)
Can you speak / read Chinese?

If you use Adobe Bridge you can set up Collections (e.g. DT Accepted, DT Rejected) and then just drag and drop the photo into the collection. One photo can be in multiple collections.

Someone link to the law and decision that supports the "common wisdom" that we can't shoot the Eiffel Tower at night or the Sydney Opera House. Not rules on stock sites, not common knowledge, the actual court ruling. (good luck!)

Where do they get the money to pay us?  I'm not interested in sites like this anymore, I want sales.  I have been paid to upload a few times and my portfolio just sites there for a year with hardly any sales.

I did a quick search and wasn't impressed.  They shouldn't be selling this one as RF, it's a trademark.

they have also Eiffel tower by night, but they will change that for sure :)

The claim that the lighting is protected has never been challenged in court, so it's just a nice assumed legality until then.

No. It has been challenged in court.

SS used to sell modern buildings like hot cakes when I started in 2008. The rules have changed, but the old images remain in the database. From the major sites DT and IS still accept them but they usually do not sell in such volume as they did at SS.

The agencies should lobby for clearer and more photographer-friendly laws, as in Germany or Austria.

It's just a question of time until they come (back)  ;D

In ancient religious texts there are descriptions of flying machines (e.g. Book of Ezekiel / Bible or Hindu writings).
Very intriguing indeed. Hallucinations or did they really see those flying chariots of fire?
Then there are the Nazca Lines or the stone of Baalbek - nobody seems to have really convincing explanations.

Newbie Discussion / Re: Differant rules in differant countries.
« on: November 25, 2010, 13:07 »

It seems that here in the UK, we are pretty open with regards to the fact that we can, when standing in a public place, take a photograph of anyone or anything we want, and use it for any purpose whatsoever without the need to complete any forms.

No, if there is at least 1 recognizable person, you always need a model release if you want to sell the picture as commercial RF.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoramafreiheit

http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoramafreiheit#Gro.C3.9Fbritannien

The  most photographer-friendly country seems to be Austria.

The freedom of panorama is defined in section 62 of the United Kingdom Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988, but it doesn't mean you can shoot and sell anything. No serious agency would accept photos of Piccadilly Circus for commercial RF because of the logos. I also read that places protected by the National Trust are very problematic and can't be photographed freely.

Apart from copyright issues, in the UK a photographer is sometimes treated as a criminal.
When I was in London in 2008, I was grabbed a couple of times by guards in Canary Wharf, some wanted to see if the camera really captured photos, others told me to go away. I also had to show the contents of my backpack to policemen. When I was photographing the Big Ben I had to show my passport to the Bobbies...
Rather unpleasant.

Wouldnt it make more sense to concentrate dead-.hard on say 4 or 5 sites, giving it everything and more, instead of wasting precious time and effort on something which really doesnt work?

No, it wouldn't.
We need at least 10 strong sites, or better 15. Otherwise the big ones will sc%# us without mercy. Or worse, getty will buy the remaining sites from the big 4 and then it's game over. You will have to be happy if they throw  you 1%. You will have to lick the crumbs off their table.

Of course, some of the low earners suck, some don't have enough budget to do marketing. The least we can do is to give them a chance and supply them. Some will fail, no doubt, the time that we have invested is in vain, but if we don't support the low earners get ready to be sc%#*$ by those con artists really hard.
