Who said you have to delete SS and FT? The mail says "Please note, all obligations with different agencies must be met prior to August 1, 2009." So, as I said, the agency preventing you is DT. Start the process, sign the form, since the others aren't preventing you, and finish the others by August.
I don't think IS is out to screw anyone with this one. Just another confusing email.
Is this a typo or are they only helping people who have been waiting to leave DT for the past 6 months? I could understand if it was August 2010 but that's 9 months away, if they want people to decide by the January deadline, they should be able to leave DT in 6 months.
1st August 2010 is less than 7 months away.

Here's a tutorial on how to convert an drawing to a vector illustration using Adobe Illustrator (and Photoshop to clean up the original scan) This site has lots of other tutorials.

If going exclusive is so tempting, then why hasn't Yuri Arcurs done it? I would think that he is a good role model to emulate. He seems to have figured out the business end of microstock.
One could just as easily ask "If being independent is so great why haven't Lise Gagne, Sean Locke, etc. done it?"
Yuri is very successful and very talented. However, with all the people he has working for him, and with his massive overhead, he is really more of a factory than a simple microstock contributor.
Most of us sole proprietors will never be able to produce the quantity of content he does, so what works for him might not work for others of us and visa versa.
I see Lise is less than 50,000 from the 1,000,000 mark.

Surely if you want to give images to a worth cause you can negotiate some RM license agreement with them for nominal fee.

No one seems to have mentioned that being exclusive on istock will allow you to build a much larger portfolio there, assuming you've got heaps of images on other sites but not on istock due to upload limits.

did you start this thread because you can't get into Vetta? The OP appears to be independent and hence not eligible to submit to Vetta.

Hi Suljo, the illustration is very metaphorical, and represents a phrase that I had never heard until joining istock (so it's probably only common in North America), which is Heart Heart Unicorn Rainbow and apparently means whatever bad things we say about you we don't realy mean it and we still love you.
A unicorn is a mythological animal resembling a horse with a horn on it's head, so that's not a penis accidently drawn in the wrong place. The rainbow represents good feeling, and the illustration was uploaded three years ago - standards have changed since then.
Perhaps if you put HHUR at the end of your posts about istock they wouldn't get angry with you.

Expecially as they're prepared to negotiate with independents who have contractual obligations that prevent them from going exclusive before the deadline. I presume they mean DT.
I didn't see that in there or was it in another thread? All I saw was that they said they reserve the right to offer exclusivity to people under 500 downloads. That and a lot of unicorns and rainbows.
From KTs original announcement This will apply to anyone who becomes Exclusive before February 24. If you're interested in becoming Exclusive but will be prevented by other contractual obligations before that cut-off date, get in touch with us and we can work something out. Email us at [email protected] before January 11 and we will arrange a wider window that works for you.

istock seems to want to attract more pros as exclusive contributors. To do this they need to make it a competitive option. General consensus here seems to be that up 'til now independents do better financially. If istock has done the research properly then maybe that is about to change.

It's far better than nothing. And, by the way, being just for exclusives, puts a dilemma on the independents wich are on the fence.

Newbies still need 500 even with the revision to canisters just announced. There's already comment on the istock forums about diversifying (outlets, presumably) from those racing to make bronze. ETA: Looks like I might be wrong. From rogermexico: We are going to reserve the right to offer exclusivity to people with under 500 downloads, depending on the circumstances. So - if you're interested and under, we'll talk about it.

I wonder how lisegagne or hidesy would make out if they were starting in the current climate. Neither was a professional photographer, nor determined from the outset to make a success of stock photography. Each was encouraged by early successes. Their skills developed over time. Don't think it could happen today.

It's a long long time since I read Alvin Toffler's Future Shock. I'm pretty sure that's where I first encountered the idea that there is no such thing as a lifelong career anymore. I think he cited that the average person would have five different careers during their lifetime. I'm on my fourth (not counting microstock which isn't at the level of a career yet for me). I must admit I'm pretty surprised at what seems to be the underlying expectation of many microstockers - that they will be still doing this in 10 - 20 years time. Seems unlikely to me.

I don't see any image exclusivity implied here. istock always wants 'your best work'. If a diamond independent goes exclusive then they would probably upload their most successful images (that weren't already on istock) first, and maybe not bother with their less successful stuff.

Anyone new to the game will have substantial portfolios on other sites by the time they're eligible for exclusivity on istock. I suspect fewer will switch. The question is, will any of these people ever be or become any good? How long will it take for istocks closed door policy to start affecting their collection(s)?

Some time ago istock reduced the requirement for bronze from 500 to 250 because, I believe, it had become a lot harder for newcomers to reach 500, and because that was the level required to go exclusive. Now it's going back to 500 and getting there hasn't got any easier. If the bias against non-exclusives increases or even if it just stays the same it will be very difficult for newcomers, with small portfolios, few upload slots and no promotion on the site to ever reach the point where they can choose to go exclusive and improve their prospects. The effect of this must surely to be to block access to all but the most talented. They can't be saving much money by doubling that particular cannister requirement, and yet it will probably have the most profound effect in the long term.

If the search ranking for non-exclusives will now be as cr@ppy as some are saying, it could take a new contributor an extremely long time to get the 250 downloads neded to go exclusive.
Somehow, in the long run, I feel that IStock is shooting themselves in the foot with these ever-more-convoluted pricing and ranking games. I can't say exactly why, but eventually if your suppliers come to hate you, your competitors will benefit.
I think 500 will be the figure required to go exclusive when bronze is achieved at 500.

I don't think Editorial work contracts covers selling editorial images as RF on a stock site.

There may be some, though, who take the attitude if you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Particularly if increased payouts close the gap financially.

October '08 I think it was that istock decided to encourage contributors who were 'sitting on the fence' (rogermexico's term I think) about exclusivity by favouring best match even more towards exclusives than usual. istock dropped to number 5 position on that poll over on the right, independents got totally hammered, and exclusives still remember those heady days when the dls never stopped. I think that's what's about to happen again.

The reality of those sites (and I'm a RedBubble member) is that very few artists make any significant money. How often have I seen someone post 'Thanks to whoever bought a card (or a Tee)'? A dollar or two. Occasionally. There's no way these people would (or could) pay $100s for ELs. Of course they shouldn't be trying to sell their composites without an EL but most people here can understand the thrill of an occasional sale, even if it is a pittance.
There are some artists who are successful on these sites, and some who really are thieves. Like so much of what goes on over the internet, cyberspace is a very gray area. I guess it boils down to individual judgement as to how much to pursue these issues.
