Bringing this post up back up because I just ran across this note on DT: someone was asking why a photo was removed from their portfolio, this was part of Achillies' response (Jan 08):
For example we were recently informed by the Royal Mint of Canada that we need to remove all canadian coins from the site.

I'm in Central Canada. I thought I would check in on MP again as many on this continent are now saying that the speed is wonderful. Wow, I punched in mostphotos.com and it loaded within 13 seconds. I'm very impressed. I closed the window and started again. Doesn't load for 75 seconds. I close window and open and try to connect again. Doesn't load for over 2 minutes. That's it. I give up for now. Let me know when I can start uploading to these guys.

Yes, I have found the indexing totally crazy lately. One batch will be live the same morning I see the approval, and the next won't be for a couple days.

Keith, it would be interesting to hear your opinion on this. I can totally understand an agency's reasons for rejecting too many of the same, but designers value having at least 1 vertical and a horizontal option of each shot. Especially for magazine layouts, photo editors very quickly fill their holes, and if the perfect vertical photo that they have found does not perfectly fit the horizontal hole in their layout, you have lost a sale. It is also very hard for many to visualize a horizontal photo on a vertical magazine cover, or a tall product. I blogged about it here One designer did reply: (in part) I've seen so many gorgeous images on stock sites I just can't use, either because the shot axis is wrong or the cropping makes me insane. And, I also encourage you to read this photo editor blog called "Fill In The Blank Stock". (You must read this entry!)

I hightly doubt many use IS categories, or any of the other sites for that matter. EXCEPT Shutterstock, I bet a lot of subscribers go to People - Newest every morning.

Steve-Oh, okay - this isn't your department so you may not be able to answer these questions...
Actually, just yesterday I was looking for new music for slideshows and it was around $30 for the average body of work (about 4 minutes), so these prices seem very low. And, btw, I did go to StockXpert trying to scrub around for a link and couldn't find one. (I remembered you referring a site in an ages-old post).
5.2 You will not sell, assign, rent, lease, distribute, act as an intermediary or provider, or otherwise grant rights to third parties with regard to the Music Tracks. but you are allowed to use it in presentations, powerpoints, etc.
Would I be "selling" this music if I put it on the background of a wedding or graduation slideshow?
I need to buy music that I can use over and over again. It looks like the license is only for 60 days? The $30 songs I mentioned can be used over and over for an unlimited time.

And, don't you notice how many images there are on DT with exactly 100 sales? I used to be impressed, but then I figured out that they were contest photos and that contest exposure and bumping up your level doesn't guarantee that you will ever make much on that exclusive contest photo. How much would that same photo earn on a site like Istock? You can't even sell the same photo on your own website.
But on the other hand, sometimes they have some pretty fabulous prizes.

I'm glad you have a unique point of view, and thank you for pointing us to the Martin Evening's book. I have purchased PS books in the past and haven't really gotten much value out of them. To be quite honest, if I were to put a $ value on the Miz's tutorials, compared to the last photoshop book (that I paid about $60 for), I would have a tab with the Miz running in the several hundred $ category.
I admire the Miz's conceptual art. I REALLY admire it. I noticed it years ago, before I was a member here. I don't kid myself that I would ever get work in this style accepted anywhere. But I have learned several practical things from him.
Now, you have to admit, your posts sound pretty aggressive.
The Miz is a cherished long time member of this group, and many of us have benefited from his experience. I find it very upsetting when he is crucified for being helpful.
Until the moderator of this forum privately requests that he stop posting his tutorials, PLEASE, TO ALL YOU PROS WITH MORE EXPERIENCE THAN I... don't attend class... or better yet, stir up a "try it this way" response.
PEACE to you.

When it comes to isolations... I seriously don't know why the agencies don't have an "isolated" category, and when a submission just happens to be a perfect isolation, the reviewers can add it to that category to. Apart for the stray areas of non-white, a true isolation should be free of a shadow as well, even though I prefer to see a shadow myself.

My second time uploading (Sunday eve). - 10 already approved are still in queued folder. Do they really stay there after they are reviewed? - Uploaded 5 by webform. Nowhere to be found. - Uploaded 3 more by webform. Those missing too. - Hit refresh in queued folder, and first 10 are still there, no new uploads. It makes me nervous when I upload prized property and it disappears onto some server .... Others mentioned something like this happened with ftp - am I too early to be concerned? My first uploads (by webform) were there immediately.

I do my RAW editing with Capture, save as tiff for the PhotoShop work and then save as JPEG. I've never had any problems. They've fairly recently upgraded to v1.3, which fixed a LOT of problems - in case you don't have the most current upgrade.

Just click through to her personal website. OMG, if I could only have half that talent. She has a nice collection of work, bookcovers, brochures etc., but only 31 on IS. I wonder how many they have rejected that she only has 31?
What is raster illustration?

When I click your portfolio link it goes nowhere. Do you know if that link was working correctly before? They didn't delete your whole portfolio did they? I wonder what's up??? I hope for your sake it's just a temporary glitch and not something more serious.
On another note, I received a blank e-mail from Fotolia this morning with something like "#subject" in the subject line. Maybe they are having some kind of problems.

Thanks for reminding me, it worked now. I even tried to join the forum earlier so I could ask, but it didn't recognize me after I signed up.

I do recognize some of the photos on that site... but how can anyone send their prized property to a site that doesn't say who they are, where they are, what their phone number is, what their address is, who the owners of the company are, what laws of what country govern their agreement... Looks pretty shady to me.

Nope, I've heard that most of them will delete a single photo if you have an exclusive sale of a file, but never cancelling an account.
Sometimes the wait can be a good thing. Maybe by September you will fall victim to the latest best match changes at your chosen agency and will see the negative side of exclusivity! (But hopefully not!)

There I go, not being succinct enough again... I was thinking the percentage of individual sales not $. If you have 100 individual sales and 13 of them were subs, that would be 13%.
This will likely be a close estimate, since DT only shows the most recent sale of that photo, when it may have sold a few times by the end of the day.
I set the poll so that you can edit your answers.
Also, I thought individual sales would be the best way to go because of the many factors: different price levels, sizes etc. that are specific to each contributor, their popularity and their make of camera.

All I have is one little photo to upload but last night and this morning I get a "photo must be a mininum of 800 on shortest side" type of error message. It's 2592x3872.
Is it just me? Have I done something silly? I think not, it worked everywhere else.

Last month I mentioned that I would run this poll, so, here it is, a little late... if you keep this kind of data, it would be interesting to see how our numbers average out.
If your numbers are much higher than 30%, please let us know.
My subs in Feb were down a little - 17.5% of individual image sales, in January they were about 21.5%.

I agree Hatman. I have never thought of downsizing photos for StockXpert, but I am troubled by the effect opting out has on overall popularity of photos.
Eco's portfolio is a good example of how this can only hurt these agency - either by contributors downsizing photos or simply abandoning the agency that offers highrez subs. I would expect that many people seek out Eco's work because of it's uniqueness and quality. Wouldn't the smallish sizes drive experienced buyers to Istock, where they know they can purchase his full rez files? It sounds like before you opted out, you downsized, is that right Eco?
I have downsized for SS the past few months, but will this hurt me long-term? I really think that within a couple years they will have to offer single photo sales to keep their market share.
