OP is original poster or the guy/gal that started the thread. A lot of people here have strong opinions and many of them are very negative about agencies. CanStockPhoto just happens to be one with a lot of favorable opinions, so people were just voicing their rebuttals. I'm a contributor to CanStockPhoto. You can find my portfolio here: http://www.canstockphoto.com/cthoman/I'm not sure about anyone's hidden agendas, but there are a lot of agency representatives that pop into the forums here. They are usually clearly labeled or identify themselves though and not being covert about it.

I'm not sure who you think are company employees here...
That's what I was wondering. Is it me?

mmh Shutterstock is okay but I think they are responsible to same extend for the state of the industry (oversupply and too low prices). Their referral-program did a lot too the oversupply and wouldn't they have been so successful with their subscription-program no other microsite (i.e. Fotolia, Dreamstime etc.) would have ever introduced subscription. I have nothing against Shutterstock but I really think without them the overall market would be better.
I tend to agree. I think there are all these successful models that propagated that aren't exactly in everyone's best interest. Hopefully, the industry can course correct at some point. I think people's disdain for Thinkstock says a lot about how they feel about subs in the back of their mind.

For me, they've definitely been in a slide. I can't say where the money has gone though. This month was the big one because it was my best month at IS last year and was 50% less this year.

Remember, this is only my "share"! The website already made it's share which I might add is a much larger portion of profit than what's given the photographer as his share.
CanStockPhoto is 50/50, so we get the same as they do from each sale. Obviously, you didn't get your share from your closed account sales, and I feel for you. But, I still think CanStockPhoto is a good company and not worth your ire. It's a tough world out there. I learn so much from each deal I've been cheated on over the years. I'd like to think that they've never happened, but each one makes me wiser.

Mark me down as a CanStockPhoto supporter too. They are a good earner, solid RPD, and a good royalty percentage. It sucks that you got burned, but you definitely have to close any micro account carefully to make sure you don't leave money behind. Support will usually guide you on their policies. I just contacted support for 2 agencies today for deleting my images and they both had quick responses, were polite, and helpful. I know this isn't any consolation, but take it as a learning experience and move on.

It happened. I know it's hard to believe that one of the largest and best trained militaries in the world could manage to track down one bearded dude in 10 years, but they did. It happened.

that´s a good one, so what shall we use? come on paypal is fine!!
The sky is falling. Didn't you read it in the paper this morning? Seriously though... it stinks when you're on the wrong side of currency fluctuations, but isn't that just part of doing global business? You've opened up all these markets with the internet that weren't available before. Whether you're getting paid in a strong dollar, weak dollar, euro; it's all money that wasn't available to you before.

There is a solution. A dollar is still worth a dollar here.

Sounds like class-action lawyers are the big losers here.

Interesting. I'd been wondering about this recently. I also was wondering about how the prices are determined. Your's are higher than mine (ones from an agency partner), but lower than Yuri's. Also, what royalty do they pay? Do they get rid of your partner images if you submit direct?

It's a shame that this thread degraded into this. I feel bad for Jean because nobody likes to feel like they weren't given a fair chance. I also feel for Dan because all he was trying to create was something better. I hope he is successful, so more people can take part in it. As Cathy said, Ktools or other programs are available to everyone. I have a store myself. Personally, I'd love to see a lively independent community here. I encourage people to go and try things out for themselves.

I think I'm going to work on an illustration of a lemming riding a sheep over a cliff today.
Perfect! Can't wait to see that one
I was joking, but you've called my bluff. I guess I'll have to work on one when I get some free time.

That's a shame to hear. Hopefully, you'll still pop in from time to time. I definitely get sick of it and pull away for a while, but I think there is still good information to be shared here.

Illustrator 'master'? That phrase would bring someone like Escher to and educated mind, not an amateur who copies a tutorials... tutorials for g.s. : }
Well, those are just mean words. I think Russell is very talented and definitely a pro illustrator. Maybe no Gary Baseman, but the guy's got some skills.

Although the idea of custom jobs seems appealing, it demands from the artist to do sketchwork for FREE with unlimited revisions(!), until the sketch is approved. Only then will the artist receive payment. No way any artist in his right mind would do something like that.
That is strange wording. I thought I remember reading that free sketches were recommended, but not mandatory. The only thing that was required was to work through their system for clients that contact you through Drawshop (similar to Elance). I'm sure Poul can clear it up.

LOL. I completely understand. It's hard to resist a design tweak here and a design tweak there. Then the next thing you know, it's a month later.

Interesting topic. I haven't had any complaints about ownership, but that doesn't mean that some people aren't thinking it. I like the testimonials idea. I may have to work on that.
You do have a lot of info pointing to your actual identity, so it is hard to say what people's issues are. Maybe, a more personalized bio in your about section (less third person). You could feature process things or shoots from your blog on the home page or maybe in your bio. Maybe, a link to what's happening now in Elena's world on the about page.
As far as design, I'm not crazy about the blue gradients. I think the design could breathe more too, but I'm picky and opinionated.

Good to see him back. Hopefully, it wasn't a serious issue. Anyway... What was that saying about eggs in a basket?

Yeah, I have nothing but kind words to say about Jamie and the site. They really put the agent back into agency. I wish there were more sites like it out there.

If you do your keywording in the IPTC, through photoshop or some other program, it will be read by all the sites and you only have to do it the one time. Then you just FTP the images and (on some sites) attach categories and releases. It's not really any harder to upload to 10 sites than two or three. Especially if one of the two or three you are on is Istock. It takes me an hour to upload, disambiguate, etc. 15 images on Istock, and it takes less than an additional hour to get them on 9 other sites.
LOL. This is sad, but true.

I thought they were supposed to repeal this? It seems silly to get overlapping 1099.
You're confusing the 1099 thing that they did repeal, with this.
We're still talking about the 1099-K though. I'm still not sure what to do with overlapping 1099's.
