What do you think?

I think Fotolia is a joke. The sooner they go out of business the better. I left there in January and I can't say I miss them.

Take the income that you earned in a month at a site and divide it by the number of images you have there. That's your RPI. Do several months to get an average. Add up your RPI for each site and that is your total RPI. Then, you can calculate roughly how many images you need to reach your goal and which sites are more profitable to upload to. It's not a straight shot, and you'll probably need to make adjustments along the road. But, it is a better indicator than other people's numbers. Other people's figures can be inspiring, but they don't necessarily apply to you.

In defense of the exclusives, sending iStock's customers to DT, FT or SS isn't beneficial for my business either. I'd end up making less money. Sending them to Pond5 doesn't seem very beneficial either since I don't have images there. I applaud the OP for trying to do the right thing, but it isn't necessarily helpful or beneficial to the rest of us. That said, I send customers to my own site and that doesn't help anybody but me. The moral is every man/woman for themselves.  ;D

I find the poll results pretty inaccurate (especially as a vector artist). Take what everybody else says with a grain of salt and try things out for yourself.

2705
yeah, that would be an OK work around, but in the batch edit function you can't add images to multiple categories.. just move around their main category :S

I've got a mod for that, but if you can get it to work another way, that is probably easier.

I apply the formula: don`t buy at istock, don`t sell at istock.

Istock is an abusive system.
If you buy at istock, you support an abusive system.
If you upload to istock, you support a abusive system.
If you are an exclusive artist at istock you give your name and all your creativity to an abusive system. Nothing to be proud of, buth rather ashamed.
Simple and clear.

That's a good philosophy, but where does it stop? Does it extend to FT, DT, SS? There are very few agencies that I think have got it right.

If you put the image in both categories, they will be in people as well. It will be more category selecting which is time consuming.

General Stock Discussion / Re: A list of partner programs
« on: April 08, 2011, 00:35 »
Not to call shenanigans, but this Pixmac thing is still a mystery to me. Everyone says they canceled their partnership, but my images there have increased since January.

There was a big long thread about this. I think it was about removing links though. While I'm not going to take time to un-recommend iStock or any other site, I do advertise my personal stock site to my freelance clients.

Russel work still unavaliable. Must be something very serious.

Yeah, I noticed Google had reindexed too, so his iStock profile doesn't show up with a search anymore. I guess it is none of my business, but I'm still curious.

Envato / Re: Envato Marketplaces
« on: April 07, 2011, 09:22 »
Old thread, but I just looked over the site again. They still have the most poorly written licensing agreement. It doesn't mention logos or branding and seems to gloss over a lot of other things.

In fairness to cthoman, I've also had assistants from SVA and clients from Pratt, and they were very well educated. And they knew the subway system- always a plus  ;)

Hey, I didn't go to those schools, so no insult to me. I went to the clown school in Florida. I just hear those mentioned as some of the best schools in the country, but New Yorkers like to throw around the word "best" a lot too.  ;D

Is it just me, or are many agencies reporting incorrectly? I got THREE 1099's from Bigstock photo, and the 2nd correction is still WRONG. So far everyone is under-reporting.... I think... I know shutterstock pushes your December earnings over into the next fiscal year and my spreadsheets account for that when calculating my taxes, BUT, even they still are under-reporting...

So whats up with everyone else here????

Yeah, I think I got 3 from them and none of them were right. Everyone else seemed to get it right though.

2714
That is all just ... odd.  Maybe he has a relative that was killed by a micro loser photographer or something.

Mauled by a wildlife photographer.

I did learn something though. Apparently, there are only 10 photographers that earn a living with microstock.  ;)

2715
Sorry about the attack, but that's hilarious.  ;D You have to scratch your head and laugh about the internet sometimes.

2716
That makes sense. Ringling's Fine Art program wasn't as strong as the Computer animation or Illustration. Although, I graduated about 13 years ago, so I'm sure a lot has changed.

2717
Most colleges don't cost that here.  The art college she wants to go to is one of the very best in the US.  It's very prestigious -kind of the "Harvard" of art colleges.
Is that Pratt or SVA? I remember those being pretty expensive back in the day. They must be really expensive now. She's not staying in state and going to Ringling? Now, I'm insulted.  ;D

Why not concentrate on Shutterstock and Dreamstime until you have a big enough portfolio to get more sales on the smaller sites?  I'm not saying we should all dump istock for the small sites that don't have sales but I'm sure if we just carry on as normal with istock things will just get worse.

As an illustrator, iStock (despite the low royalties) still pays 2 to 3 times more per sale than DT or FT and about 5 or 6 times more than SS. So, I don't really see why I should treat them any different than any other agency. That said, I've stopped uploading to all the big 4, and ditched FT. None of them are growing very much anyway, so I figured I'd focus on some smaller agencies and my own stuff.

2719
Ok. I just had an image approved on April 2nd and it's being called a level 1. When does the level 0 kick in? Or was it all a joke?

It looks like it is in effect. If you logout and surf the site, you'll get the new prices. It said something about for new customers only in the announcement. I'm still not entirely sure what that means. New credits purchased after April 1st? New customers signed up after April 1st?  ???

2720
Sorry but these changes are shafting everyone. Of course there's also no way of opting out of subs at Dreamstime, or deleting all your content if you're not happy with the changes because your portfolio is locked in for 6 months.

You have to think it won't work out for them very well either. It's pretty easy to download all 10 in a day. Which could easily mean they'll make very little or lose money on each transaction.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: BME! NOT!!
« on: April 01, 2011, 15:18 »
Best month of the year, but down 30% from last March. Things really fell off the cliff for me at IS in December and haven't really recovered. April was my BME last year, but I don't expect to get anywhere near that this month. Judging by how it's been going, half of last April wouldn't be surprising.

2722
OK, now DT is down. Now, that is funny.  ;D

2723
This kind of seems in poor taste even for April fools. Maybe, I'm just losing my sense of humor.  ;D

It's definitely surprising to see. Hopefully, it's not "abusive inspiration" like claimed in the article.

I've always admired IS's "abusive inspiration" policy though. People may have gotten unfairly burned by it, but it's good to have a policy that states that something doesn't have to be a direct copy to be a copy. Especially for those that dip into the "inspiration" well too many times.

2725
There is room for both.  If you believe in this project, go for it.  And there potentially 2 contributor collectives...Jeancliclac is working on one too.

I tend to agree. If you believe in the idea, then go for it. There's the contributor collective, but there are also several systems out there too like Clustershot, Photodeck, Avid Images, and Photoshelter. All of them are more contributor orientated which is nice to have. I'd probably try more of those out, but they don't offer support for vectors. There's always going to be competition out there, but it's nice to have competition that favors the contributors.
