Adobe Stock / Re: Nine days without sales
« on: December 02, 2007, 12:19 »
Ever since V2 I cannot predict.  I have more days without sales than those with. Then last week I had several days in a row with several sales each day.  It seemed that something was fixed that had been broken and then it stopped again.

That might be the case.  One of mine has a free download and it actually said "steel cage".

« on: December 02, 2007, 10:41 »
Wow Adelaide, that's a pretty good ratio.  I had 7 sales and 3 of them were subs.  I have only sent 60 photos there so far and don't have a lot of incentive to send many more right now.  Signed up there and 123 at same time but have more than double the sales at 123.  I guess I shouldn't judge until I give them both attention and get everything online.

What happened to DT?  Perhaps the subscription effect is beginning to be noticeable now that the purchasers have used all their credits and switching to Sub.

« on: December 01, 2007, 03:13 »
Good advice Hatman.

It's nice to bulk up your portfolio, but I think that having too many similars can hurt you in some ways.  A photo on SS can become quite popular and can stay at the top of searches for quite a while, but if you are competing with yourself and the downloads shared they will both sink faster.  Also, on DT the more an individual photo sells the more it is worth - so you are holding back your earnings potential.  On LO on the other hand, you can submit all of them.

First, select the best vertical and a similar horizontal.  (Don't submit both to 123 on the same day or may be rejected).   Add a full body shot and a severe closeup.    If they are all "happy smiling child" they are likely quite similar, but if you have some "rotten little scoundrel" faces send them too and focus on that in your keywords.  My son (at 3) was having one of those moments and his scowling face made it on a book cover.

You're welcome, Laurent ;)

It's great to hear good stories. The only queries I get though are to give a photo away for free.

Thanks for the tips Sharply Done
I looked into the horizontal-vertical thing already here:

Panoramic is a lot of work ! ;D

Hey ldambies, I was going to leave a comment on your blog but I can't seem to sign in.  It's google.... It tells me I can't create an account because my e-mail is already in use, and then I try to log in with my e-mail and it tells me it doesn't exist.   Anyhow - interesting analysis.  Will be interesting to see results a after a few months.  I read somewhere that magazines buy mostly of vertical photos.   I'm not sure we sell much to magazines, and I haven't flipped through many lately.  I need to start blogging... so many hockey and ringette photos in the can to process and every year this time I get so many Christmas card shoots.... I'm the worst blogger of all time....

Tnx.

But this in unbelieveable! Yesterday I had 20 sales, but today only 5! I need 9 more. When I need those few sales, they wont come. Today is my worst day ever! only 5 sales....

Hope tomorow will be better day.... :)

Boy, I can't wait to hear your numbers once you have all your non-exclusive images loaded elsewhere!

Congrats on Silver. It'll happen TODAY!

You can never let your images go without protecting them.  Part of this means hiring a lawyer to draft an agreement of terms and that isn't very practical.  The easiest thing is to have them protected by the end user agreement with an agency.  Are these images available on another agency that isn't as expensive or doesn't require such a large purchase?  It seems to me maybe StockXpert offers small purchases.  On Fotolia, if you buy 10 credits you can order any number after that 16, 12 - not a package of 10, 20, 50 etc that the others require.

I wish these agencies would allow single photo purchases.  I expect they would make more in the end as so many non-pros balk at buying more credits than they need for the little project they are making.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Future Of Microstock
« on: November 28, 2007, 11:54 »
As more companies start using microstock for advertising, more companies are going to get burnt when the images used are used by someone else simultaneously.

So true.  I've noticed this twice last winter.  First, I do a bit of work for the big bridal show.  When their magazine hit the newspaper, there was the bride that the show used on their magazine cover (and postcards, etc.), as well she was on two non-related ads inside.

The second was during RSP/tax season.   There were huge print and tv ads, and billboards all over town - featuring big happy faces with glasses.  It got to be very confusing because a bank and a national optical chain were using the same set of photos.  The people that sell glasses couldn't shoot their own product???    If I paid for a billboard and it was on one side of the bridge for people to see on their way in and the same face was on a billboard selling something else at the in the other direction for people to see on the drive home I would be pissed.

I have a worry that subscriptions will erode the income...

Subscriptions piss me off too. :)

Bigstock.com / Re: how to add images to a gallery ?
« on: November 28, 2007, 11:36 »
Pop the photo open, scroll down - you will see "Your Gallery Manager" and an Ad button.  From there, pick which gallery from the drop-down that you want to put it in.   (If you have named/created your gallery first).  Hope this helps!

I only uploaded a couple and after such a great October, my sales are down to August level. But I've been lucky to have some EL's in Nov, so it will be my best overall month there.   I just hate seeing declining downloads...  I can't see myself having time to shoot much new before Feb either so it's just the beginning.

But, what happens when we are all snake charmers and buy into Sideshow, then nothing from the sideshow comes up on the first 10 pages anyway?  Isn't it only a single column down the right, isn't it?  Wouldn't it be natural that those new to the sideshow will likely fall farther back in the results (I'm thinking due to less popular photos)?

2818
Was this there before?  I looked at one of my own files and it showed similars... then immediately following it showed "More images from Pixart's portfolio".  It only showed my most recent, most popular would be nice  :) still nice to see though.

A bit out of topic - some statistics taken from DT...

Thanks for confirming my previous post  ;)

Concerning portfolio size, I'm not sure it is a good indicator of anything useful: I've seen recently on StockXpert that in iofoto portfolio (12'000 photos), 65% haven't been downloaded at all and 25% once only... "only" 1200 pictures have been downloaded twice or more.

On the opposite side, on IS, sodafish has only 360 photos but more than 120'000 downloads!

Ron Chapple is a relative newcomer to "micro"stock.  His first upload to StockXpert is March 4 of this year, so those numbers are pretty good if you ask me.  Do you know when Sodafish joined IS?  Just curious if s/he has been there for years.   120,000 downloads is pretty impressive also for only 360 online.  Exclusive?

They might be considering a lower payout.  Stay tuned next year....

 shiyali is quoted as saying...
A lot of talk without addressing the request made by many in this thread for a lower payout minimum.

Yali, sorry, I was just following the last comment. We're working on trying to get things fixed up on the site right now. We read the request. Right now we want a stable site to increase downloads.

We'll take a look at payouts again in the beginning of next year. We're not avoiding the topic!

« on: November 23, 2007, 09:55 »
The thought of re-keywording the hundreds of older images there is unthinkable.

Well, I repositioned my keywords and my sales came to a screeching halt.  They vanished.  I did shortly after/during V2.  Now, in November, my sales are almost back to what they were in the spring - but I also have almost twice as many photos online.

Strobist mentions Kiva in his blog today.  He has had 100% payback on his loans.  (BTW, his blog is worth bookmarking if you haven't already).

Fortunately both Fotolia and StockXpert were both very reactive and canceled the payment request.  No money was lost.

The hacker was trying to send the money from both accounts to his MonneyBookers account (I still have his mooneybookers email address in my account).

I now use a different password on each site that I plan on changing every month.
What country are you in?  Are you (or the agency) forwarding the information to Police/RCMP/FBI - whatever?   Moneybookers must require banking info which would require id at some point, wouldn't it?

2824
cphoto, I'm sorry this happened and thank you for sharing your unfortunate experience.   I hope you find some resolution to this and that the agencies take responsibility for your earnings.

I'm sure there are many out there who use the same password for many places.  Banks, on-line accounts, forums.  Bad people have to work somewhere, and it would be so easy for a bad staff member to steal account member passwords.    And we (microstockers) all seem to hang out at the same places - the same agencies, the same blogs, the same forums.  Oh, boy... imagine signing up to some forum with your paypal e-mail address and your password, the same one that you use on all your microstock accounts.  Yikes.  I'm too old to memorize passwords anymore, and the older I get the longer the passwords get too, with a combination of upper/lower case letters, a few numbers....  My cheat sheet is getting pretty long.

It just bothers me that there are people smart enough to pull it off and who have the desire and the time to steal 100 bucks.  I suppose it's a matter of stealing several x 100 bucks.   Boy, I sure hope they are feeding a starving child with that money and not blowing it up their nose.

KinkKyle, I'm sure you have the best of intentions with your offer, but it sounds a bit like those Nigerian banks... LOL.

I have to buy some U.S. $.  What sucks the most about Paypal is you can't transfer U.S. $ into a Canadian U.S. $ bank account.  So I have to pay Paypal to exchange to Cdn. and then go to the bank and buy U.S. $ and pay the bank an exchange fee too.  I'll pay mostly by credit card when I'm gone, but I need some cash and it sucks to be taken advantage of - just because they can.
