Cameras / Lenses / Re: On a $1200 Budget, what would you get?
« on: October 03, 2007, 10:37 »

BUT, I think if you know what you are doing and are very careful you can get great shots from a $20 tripod.

Don't even entertain a cheap tripod.  Go without.  You are better off having the camera around your neck than sitting on an unstable tripod.  Save for something heavy and rugged that will outlive the next 10 bodies you purchase, and support the heavy beastly lenses you will add to your kit.

Take it from me... a wind gust knocked over my old tripod last fall and the impact broke my Nikon in half.  It's horrifying, imagine witnessing your spouse being hit by a car and seeing their wires and chips dangling from their torso.

Purchase/make a couple beanbags and use those to stabilize your camera on a table top or a car hood and save for the best tripod you can get.  Beanbags work surprizingly well.   If you can't find one simply sew (or beg someone to sew) together a square and fillit with a bag of lentils, barley etc. from the grocery store.

You can.... I contacted IS and asked to do it on my best seller, they told me to send them the new file and if it was better...they would change the file....so that's what I did.

Tom

Ha, thanks Tom, good advice, but I'm afraid to.... They rejected the rest of the series because of the map.

You know, what I think might work the best would be to comment on the 3 above you...  What do you think?  Everyone should have the time to make 3 comments, and it won't be too obvious at LO?  Then next week we can add another photo to this list and do your comments?

jorgeinthewater:  Good to hear about your vegetables!

Anyhow, here's one of my most recent ones.  I'll go comment on a few now.

This one has downloaded once or twice a day for 6 months and suddenly it has stopped at 320 dls on IS.  Still resonable sales and does very well on SS too.

Wish I could adjust the levels in it, but oh well.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Istock poll about Exclusivity
« on: September 29, 2007, 18:20 »
Yuri Arcur wrote the following on his website (I can't post a direct link to this quote but his website is here www.arcurs.com).

In one year I sell around 400,000 individual licenses for the use of my pictures, which is equal to the amount that my biggest istock competitor has had in her entire lifetime.

I don't know when that was last updated, but Lise now has 5176 photos on IS and 583770 sales.

Yuri has over 2000 on IS, but over 5000 on DT.  Difficult to compare the bottom line, but - somewhat similar size portfolio aside from the fact that he must suffer from the upload restrictions on Istock.  I'm grabbing a number here - if he averages about 60 cents per sale, Yuri would make $240,000 per year and I read recently that Lise makes $120,000.  I think that recent Times article said "over 100,000."

It's not very scientific, but I'm guessing that Yuri makes twice as much as Lise.

Edited:  I didn't mention that Lise is exclusive at IS, but I think everyone knows that.

I am sure my average sale at dreamstime is above the istock price, even with the subscription sales.  I think the lowest price I get with istock is 17 cents.  That would be at least 25 cents with the subscription sites:)
[/quote]

But you aren't selling a 10 mp photo for 17cents at Istock.

Steve-Oh, why not do the Bait & Switch?  ;)  Lure them in with 5mp subscriptions, and when they need the extra larges make them pay for extra larges.  You'll be capturing 2 customers in 1 then.

One thing about DT's subscription though... more subscription sales will elevate each photo to the next selling level more quickly - maybe we'll make more in the long run on DT once each photo is promoted?

Do any of the other microsites have size limits on their subscription offering?
Thanks!
-Steve
Many experienced stockers have recommended to downsample to 4 or 5 mp for SS because they are loath to give their XL files away for such low return.

The wild price differences in this industry don't sit well with me.   LO sells the largest/original file size for $50 and they give me $25.   Now, stop laughing.  I know a lot of us are discouraged that LO has failed to take off, but I HAVE and many others have sold XL's there.  It just doesn't seem right selling that same image for the $ or whatever the purchaser will pay you on subscription.

I'm so encouraged that yet another site values its own contributors enough to give away their body of work for nothing.

6 months ago I was at least getting numerous hits.... now...  my new stuff sits at zero or one.  It's never viewed.        Pretty depressing.

Their whole search system is just horrible.  New photos don't even exist, so I'm beginning to ask myself - why bother contributing new photos?  This whole chatter thing making photos rise to the top of the search is just riddiculous.

I've had two 30 cent sales this month.  When I received the most sales was back when the group of us was doing the comments thing.  Maybe we should give that another try?  (I was getting a magnificent 5 or 7 sales a month then.)   But do an experiment and do it just on non-popular files.  BUT on the other hand, LO was at a lot of tradeshows handing out free tokens when we tried that last comments experiment.  Who knows?

Has this improved my sales at FT?  NO.

But you can make categories in My Files, a folder to place your group of similar theme photos into.  That way, if a buyer happens to find just one of your photos, there is a chance they will click through to see the rest in the series.

Well done, and in only 5 months.  Won't it be exciting when it gets one of those icy blue flames!

Sharply, I see your work and I wonder where you can possibly position yourself to get such great images.  Do you have special access or do you live in a fabulous penthouse suite looking over the ocean and shoot from the balcony?

I wonder how much traffic is due to contributors just playing around (forums,...)

Shutterstock seems to do things differently, we go to a different site to check stats and play on the forum.  In my brief experience at SS, there hasn't been any of these monstrous troubles the others eventually stumble into that I've noticed.  I wouldn't be surprised if contributors spend more time than purchasers on these sites.

Jan, all great things seem to fall subject to controversy.  I'm sorry your moment is being somewhat overshadowed by the category discussion on this an StockXpert's forum.  Your photo is definitely 1) high concept 2) pleasing to the eye 3) thought provoking 4) an all around winner.  The first time I saw it I thought of the polar bears stranded on ice flows, polar caps shrinking, etc.  I think it is definitely a green concept.  And like one of the judges pointed out, he does look optimistic about his predicament.  It's also a good stock photo because it could be useful to so many different markets.  Have you enjoyed many sales with this little guy?

We can all celebrate that our "little penguin" (LOL Perrush!) has been chosen.

Seriously, you need to start a chapter on your website with all the accolades you have enjoyed.

I'm not trying to start an argument because I know nothing about economics - but wasn't the US in Vietnam or just out of Vietnam the last time the CDN $ was this high?  1976?

When CAD was at 1.60 vs USD, did Canada go to war, or had unbalanced budget? In fact, Canada has balanced budgets for what, 25-30 years now? And fights mostly mosquitos in prairie provinces not spending on military anything above amounts bordering with indecent.

Hmm.. then why are so many Canadians dying in Afganistan?  (And why is my nephew taking advanced bomb squad training to go there in a few weeks? :'()

« on: September 20, 2007, 14:29 »
Boy, there used to be a time when we (Canadians) earned U.S. $ we were really doing good.  In the recent past it was worth 40 cents more than our dollar.

Our dollar is high, but U.S. is also low.   Has it had much on everyone's earnings in other places - Great Britain, etc. much?

Here's the news today - I NEVER thought I'd see this again:  (Hey Leaf - as an ExPat you may be interested in this....)

Canadian dollar hits parity with greenback
Updated Thu. Sep. 20 2007 1:40 PM ET

The Canadian dollar reached parity Thursday morning with the U.S. currency for the first time in nearly 31 years.

The loonie was supported by lofty commodity prices, a strong domestic economy and concerns about a U.S. economic slowdown.

At 10:58 a.m. EDT, the loonie rose as high as US$1.0004 before backing off to 99.86 cents US -- up 1.36 cents US from Wednesday.

Off Topic / Re: Big Stock Licensing Question
« on: September 17, 2007, 19:52 »
Thanks Perrush, I did ask on their forum and one of the admins confirmed.  So, yes, they got the photo for a buck.  Now, I don't think this title is going to sell a million copies, but wow - imagine if your photo was purchased for a buck and was on the latest Harry Potter cover?

I find it more bizarre that you have to buy a special license to put the same photo on a single coffee mug, but oh well.

The other stab - get this - the subject matter could be defamatory so they asked special permission to use the photo and that I sign a minor model release (my kid) and mail it back to them.  Here's the stab.... it costs .93 cents plus .06 gst to mail a letter to the U.S. from here.   ::)  With currency exchange I will have made about 3 cents. :o

The agent is really nice though, I made a comment that I liked their catalogue - is it available in Canada and he said to send him a list of titles, they likely have publicity copies they can send.

I have a digital file that I'll post if/when it actually goes to print.
